Currently, all FEN strings in posts are displayed as diagrams:
Collections of FEN/EPD strings (such as test suites) are best posted as attachments.
If you feel that the diagrams are too big, go to "Options" and select "Small chess diagrams" under "Display Options". You might need to do a "hard refresh" in your browser after that to make sure that the updated JavaScript is loaded from the server.

Is it possible to post an entire game and use the diagram GUI to walk through it? It has the proper forward and backwards functionality already implemented at the bottom.
This is something that is planned for the next version ;)
Actually, I wouldn't hold my breath, as I haven't touched the code for a long time. But since you mention it I'll move it up one slot on my todo list. :)
It does, and if you haven't noticed, you can actually move the pieces on the diagram (only legal moves are allowed). Also note that the FEN string above the diagram is always updated to reflect the current position.

>you can actually move the pieces on the diagram
You must click the piece on the board, then click the destination square. The usual drag & drop (holding down the mouse button) doesn't work. It appears that the control buttons below the diagram are inactive until you have clicked something on the board, but I'm not sure yet if this is always true... :)
That's correct and the control buttons only become active when some moves have been made.
The diagrams have disappeared!? Only the FEN string appears now. I've tried both the large and small diagram sizes in Options. I'm using AquaDark style.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "hard refresh". I tried pressing the F5 key, which refreshes the screen. I also closed then reopened my IE6 browser. I haven't restarted my computer, which is very busy calculating my next brilliant move in a chess game. :)

I forgot that IE is always a special case. Corrected. Thanks for taking the time to report this problem.

That should do the trick in IE.
Why do people still use IE when there is Firefox? It is truly a mystery to me.
Here are the statistics for users visiting this forum:
MSIE 60.0%
Gecko 33.8%
Opera 5.3%
KHTML 0.9%
Other 0.0%
This is the first time I see Gecko leading:
MSIE 44.0%
Gecko 45.3%
Opera 3.9%
KHTML 6.4%
Other 0.4%
What's the version breakdown?
Here is a Q&D summary for FF, IE and Opera (so the percentages don't match those I showed above):

The outdatedness! It burns my eyes, the goggles do nothing!
>FF/2.0 11,3%
Here I am. In my defense, I can say that more users seem to prefer the outdatedness of FF/2.0 than Opera

FF started* to suck when they made the tab bar scrollable.
*The Linux version probably sucked even before that. The Ctrl+[num] keyboard shortcuts don't work there.

No Chrome?
Perhaps it's KHTML (which WebKit is a fork of).
I downloaded firefox. To me, it is very similar to IE. It may be better, but only marginally so for me. So I don't want to bother more about it and just use IE that everybody is familiar with (=easy support). I'm happy now that IE allows tabbed browsing.
I use Opera because of some nice features (mouse gestures, email client, tabbed browing, it's compatible with some important web standards,...). And it's much safer than IE (there are a lot of security problems with the IE).
Now firefox and IE also support tabbed browsing, but opera was the first browser with this feature afaik.

Yes, Opera and Firefox are both excellent crossplatform browsers. They are both far more secure than IE and better support modern web standards. However, I prefer Firefox for its wonderful and expansive set of extensions. Not to get too far off topic, but here are some extensions I currently use:
- Adblock Plus (blocks any ads, even banners and makes the page look normal)
- OpenSearch Fox (makes any selected field a Firefox search engine)
- Firefox Showcase (allows on the fly tab searching and convenient thumbnail display of tabs, great when having 20+ tabs)
- Customize Google + Google Preview (greatly enhances Google, too many features to list)
- TabMix Plus (more tab management goodness)
- Linkification (makes something like yahoo.com a clickable url)
- Mouse Gestures (allows quick control of Firefox through mouse movements)
- IE Tab (easy switch to IE rendering engine, good for Windows updates)
- Searchbar Autosizer (more for customization, expanding searchbox based on text)
That's just 10 extensions, but I have close to 30. Some of them are really minor, like "Clean and Close," others not so much. But one thing is for certain, they give me a much richer and individually tailored web experience. I have everything customized and set up exactly as I want.

I think you mean IE is very similar to Firefox. ;p After all, IE 7 is the one that copied many of Firefox's or Opera's features, like tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking.
this is a test

I am checking to see the browser identify and parse the FEN string as a diagram. It did not work in the preview so I try to post.
If it does not work please help!!
It did work (I am using firefox) but I had to refresh the screen quite a few times.

That's an invalid fen. You have to include the ep square (or lack thereof). It's also good form to include the 50-move count and the move number:
rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1
I suppose the EP square you are talking about is a square where one can take en passant, however that obviously not possible to take en passant in the initial position. Anyway I got your point.
Dadi, have you by any chance made on progress on being able to play a pgn in the diagram. I tried making moves and made 27 full moves, pressed start and used the right arrow key and it replayed all of them. I think it would be really great if you could post a pgn and replay it on the diagram. Lots of web sites use the same, anyway looks the same, format and you can play the game, or portion of it. I had some code from some site that would let you do it. Don't know what ever happened to it though. Thanks

I haven't spent any time recently on the diagram script, but I could add an applet to play through games in attached PGN files.
Hey, that would be great! It'd give everyone a chance to follow look at the PGN's right then.

You could use better piece graphics and make it look more Aquariumish :)
I attached piece graphics in the right size, the board square colours would be
dark: 83a5d2
light: fffffa
border: 6288b9

As long as it's the VytronKling theme ;)
merida kling is more popular, sorry :)
Ouch, I just hope that Dadi doesn't touch the Black Knight forum style if that is possible, I requested the VytronKling pieces because they appeared on these diagrams and have been my favorite chess pieces ever since.
I just hope it doesn't become a case of "the pieces look better, but I liked the old pieces better."

I'm upgrading the forum software right now and I'll test your colors and pieces too.
looks great :)
btw, the grey panel is good. Maybe making the coordinates just black is better.
Ah, I was modifying this by looking at the code and made a mistake. I gave the letters the color that was intended for the background. Changed the coordinates to black.
Sometimes you do the right things unintentionally :)
The quality of the pieces is much better now (png is simply better than gif :) ), the colours fit better to our forum theme.
It's a difference like day and night :)
