I have 7 cores, does that mean I can assign up to 4 CPU's?

I am sorry for the simple question.
my computer is a intel i7. with 12gb of memory.

does anyone know where I could find the optimal settings to allocate the resources for the engine?
I wanted to know how much hash to assign together with the "cpu's" or so.

hash size is not that important, just use 512 MB or something like this, it should be fine. and yes, just use the maximum number of available cores for best performance.

You don't have 7 cores. No CPU has that number.

my Samsung Galaxy S7 phone has 4 cores which I can assign 3 to stockfish and beat my dell inspiron 1440 laptop at chess, the phone gets around 800 knps comfortably...LOL If I try assigning all 4 cores it starts to freeze probably due to taking all the OS resources.
