This was " A Big Thanks and a Small Update " hash tag.

One of his last words to the multitude was-

" In other news, I'm working on Rybka. Rybka 5 will be ready sometime this year and the remote Rybka renting will be launched sometime after that. We'll make announcements on our web site and in our forum when we have more information. It should be a fun year.

Best wishes to everyone for a great 2012!

Some time later he left the building and apparently never looked back.

Sure, I guess circumstances changed for him and those plans were cancelled. But it would have been nice if he had told us that.

You have to wonder if he was  just  blowing a whole lot of  smoke- knowing  he was already finished , and just trying to save face!

Which would mean that the only one left to cook was Dr. Hyatt, and that job took the aftermath.

I guess Rybka Cluster was a success.

The only reason he was going to release a Rybka 5 was to promote the Rybka Cluster (as in "I'm releasing this piece of outdated software which is very weak when compared to the Cluster, and it's still awesome! Come and rent the Cluster" - even considering handing R5 for free), and since that was dropped from the plans is because it wasn't needed after all.

I still dream that I was silently dropped from the Beta circle and that they have some secret Rybka 5 Beta Forum where they're testing it out.

Would be much better than not having R5 at all, ever, but I guess if it comes to it, for the current purposes (not being Rybka's main product) Lukas can do all the testing.

I think Vas could release as Rybka 5 whatever working UCI he had in July 2013, which would be akin to when he made Rybka 2.n2(?) free.

That would be putting  the best face on it. His basic lack of communication over the years in not  making his intentions clear became one of his identifying hallmarks. In the end he got what he wanted out of the forum  - and I suppose one could say the same for the forum. It all balances out.

just a slip in the schedule ;-)
I know that Vas didn't abandon the project.

Felix, pleeeeease ... :)

Felix, you must know what happened to Vasik given that you were a part of the Rybka team. Did he literally leave without even saying anything to his team. That really is nuts...
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2015-02-21 14:00
I had email contact with him some months ago, so there's still contact and the Rybka team is still in existance :-)
That's why I can say that the project isn't dead.

Felix you are alive! Hey I am glad there is a pulse to Rybka even if it's comatose at the moment.
Parent - By Summa (**) Date 2015-02-18 17:30
I hope you don't follow his steps....   Are you going to release a new version of your program?
Parent - By Dr.X (Gold) Date 2015-02-24 00:49

Nothings going to change- It will always come down to this-

Parent - - By Geomusic (*****) Date 2015-03-30 04:59
I think Vas is waiting for the statute of limitations to pass LOL

First off Programmers don't hold the power!  Consumers do!

There is enough energy out there to support Vas' come back!

If he really wanted to turn the tide on his reputation -all he would have to do is -turn out a winning UCI chess engine.

I'm sure it would be hacked to death -but the resounding stir of his presence is what counts. Forget about the nay saying that would take place.

There is enough momentum to play the engine in tournaments-as Rybka 4.1 is repeatedly represented today in most every tournament played-  proves the point. That hurdle was jumped sometime ago.

So it really comes down to -does the guy have it in him to turn out a winning class chess engine again. Obviously-he doesn't have to start from scratch!

Balls on the ICGA! If anything they have become "radioactive" -not too many serious minded computer chess enthusiasts what to go to bed with them. The greenish-blue after glow gives  them a strangely septic after effect.

I guess it is time to move on and let the Rybka dream go!

He was always kind of aloof. Maybe he will come back before his kid graduates high school. By then Stockfish 20 will be out and his engine will be in 100th place. LOL!

I look forward to doing this again ( if I'm still alive) three years ( yeah! every three years seem good)  from now!

Yeah! In the future  Vas' Jr  may actually post a response. That would be novel. It might even be a kick if he posted that he had some cool ideas about updating Rybka, his dad's old UCI chess engine! That he found the source codes. :yell:

It is incredible that Vasik couldn't even give a simple few sentences of his plans or decisions. I mean not even a thank you to the fans. He really is a strange genius. What is up with both him and Houdart? They could have wrote a message to the fans faster than it would taken them to walk to their bathroom. They should have taken a lesson about customer service from Naum's author who actually explained to us why he decided to end his Naum endeavors.
Parent - - By Dr.X (Gold) Date 2015-02-21 08:26 Edited 2015-02-21 08:30
I think Houdart walk away more out of disgust over the pirating going on of his chess engine than anything else. No matter how much he tried to make it proprietary-hackers found a way around it. Vas may have decided to leave for the same reasons-I don't know. This is all speculation, and others have speculated something of the same. However,  Robert Houdart, if I'm not mistaken held down a day job and maintained Houdini as a hobby. Vas, I think started to rely more on his cloud project, but one never knows if he was also doing private consulting.

But the bottom line is- ultimately, no forth coming comment came after his  public statement posted on 2012 re: Rybka 5-  leading  one to think that time just past, and he decided to let his silence be the indicator of his intent or lack of.

He just didn't give a shit!

I have just realized.
Felix IS Vas.
Here to chime in whenever unsatisfied with our impatience.
Here to seed the blight that is our anticipation.
Here to ravage the frail, naive hearts of the meager few who presume that there may be life left in our slippery fish.

JK. All the best to you Felix.

Close, but no cigar! Unlike Clark Kent and Superman, we have pictures of these two together! Your theory has been disproven!

My theory, presented several years ago, is that Vas is buried in Felix's basement...
Parent - By Dr.X (Gold) Date 2015-04-01 05:54 Edited 2015-04-01 06:00
For Felix to be Vas would be like Vas being Superman in disguised as Clark Kent and Clark Kent in disguised as Felix. The  disrobing alone would take too long for  Superman to even get to the point of leaping a tall building. He'd probably just throw up his hands and let the bad guys have their way with the planet and get down to the business of screwing Lois Lane.
Parent - - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2015-04-01 06:40
I don't know.
I am having a problem with self identity myself, with what FICGS is throwing at me.
Parent - By Dr.X (Gold) Date 2015-04-01 07:33 Edited 2015-04-01 07:40
It could end up worse yet with the bad guys having their way with..Lois? Maybe Felix is ..Lex luthor ! :surprised:

Maybe the ICGA made a kryptonite chess set and sent it to Vas! :red::mad:

Bob Hyatt is really Otis!
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2015-04-01 07:46
This is getting way too crowded!

First, I was the only Banned for Life.
Then Vas was Banned for Life for hoarding too many horse heads.
Then you were Banned for Life for impersonating a FICGS admin or maybe for making a dodgy bishop move!

You guys need to come up with your own names!
Parent - By Trotsky (*****) [fr] Date 2015-04-01 09:05
Oi! I am the original Banned for Life. And the most Kafkaesque reason - Banned for life by a forum, CCC, in which I hadn't posted for six months!!
- By cipri (**) [de] Date 2015-03-28 22:56
Rybka 5 can anytime appear! And even on top of all other engines! It's easy.... just take the current source code of stockfish, change the makefile (optionally make some improvements).

Sorry to disappoint you, but I think Vas is an intelligent person, and therefore he will not return back. I expect him to go on doing new stuff (and deep learning for example is now in the trends).
