I have just bought Rybka 4 and with it came several engines.
The 960 is clearly for that version of the game.
I just wondered what the SSE42 was and whether it was stronger than the normal x64

It's a special version for the Intel Core i7 family. It evaluates around 5% faster on those systems.
If you don't have an i7, you can't make use of this, and need to use the normal version of Rybka.

How do I find out whether I am using an i7
I am using a Dell Studio Laptop with Intel Centrino 64bit.

Centrino sounds like it is not i7 or anything newer, so you should not use SSE version of the engine.

It's a version that can take advantage of the SSE4.2 processor instruction in the new machines like Core i7's and Phenom II. Therefore this R4 version is a bit faster and can play a bit stronger than normal R4.

One additional question......
Would you use the standard parameters that come with Deep Rybka 4 x64?
Or can they be tweaked to make the software stronger.
I am using the program to analyse games via Chessbase.

Trick question: you want "Always score main move" to be on when analyzing, but it's off by default because it's weaker when playing.

Standard parameters are fine in my opinion and I am using these, right now. But of course they can be tweaked in order that Rybka can play a bit stronger. The problem is that still there are no enough information, but for sure that later we will have more information about this.
Also note that if you tweaked things incorrectly, Rybka also can play much worst. It's not easy, so, you need to adjust things carefully. :-)

If you use the engine for analysis, you may also tick the "Display Upperbounds" box so Rybka tells you when a move is getting much worse than expected.
For games, check if on your conditions Rybka plays too fast or too slow (for this, check her time usage relative to the opponent), if she gets to low on the clock try decreasing Normal Move time, if she has too much time on the clock at the middle of the game try increasing Normal Move time. For slow blitz or longer time controls (like 10 0 or 16 0 and beyond) you may want to try increasing Max move time as that may help her.
You can also find better piece values, but I'd only enter this after getting the time management right.
