I don't tknow - you'll need to check with Convekta.

Does the Large Page settings effect any other applications in a bad way?
Once I have done the OS changes required for Large Pages, can I undo the settings if I want to?

Usually not

Yes, it's simple
Thanks.
What do you mean? Do you have experiences of when this is not good?

Windows can't put large pages into the swap file. So if you are running too many applications at a time and memory gets low, the performance of other applications will go down.
> memory gets low
96 gb should be enough, lol
Don't make the FAQ too long this time. It should only contain the most important basic questions. Add a LessFAQ maybe :)
Did you expect a +35 elo difference on the rating lists?
It depends on who the opponents are (since contempt is now off by default).

Vas can you plse provide a sticky thread in the FAQ section on Rybka parameter settings, briefly explaining about TC and piece values settings. defaults, ranges and tips?
thnx.
thnx.
Ok. I'll try to finally hit that next week. Sunday is a day of rest. :)

Hi Vas,
I need doc for the SSE42 version. What does it mean "SSE"? How to install it? (I found nothing about it.)

If you can run it, it'll be faster than the regular Rybka. If you can't, your processor doesn't support it.
Thank you, I can't. :)
Please a description on all the new TC settings (and maybe some recommended defaults for certain timecontrols).
More info this weekend.
The normal move time controls how long Rybka thinks in the average position. Lower values mean faster play. The exact mechanism is very specific to the type of time control.
The max move time controls how long Rybka thinks in critical positions.

MultiPV_cp default 20000?
If I remember in R3 recommended setting 50, how about in R4

Avoids overflow on some GUI's, and 20000 is just about enough.
> If I remember in R3 recommended setting 50
It should be about the same for R4, but the 20000 setting is good enough.
And the buffer determines when Rybka begins to play much faster when only [number of buffer] seconds are left.
Does this also take effect in in very short timecontrols?
Yes, it is in seconds
Do you have any plans on making Rybka 2.3.2a MP freeware? (as the demo version)
That's not a bad idea. I'll probably do it this weekned.

About Hyperthreading:
1) Does Rybka use the usual "Affinity Mask" trick of allocating every other processor (assuming that one only specifies half the cpus to use) or
2) Does Rybka even use HT to its advantage and intelligently distributes smaller loads to HT cores
3) Or is everything as with Rybka 3 - e.g. its best to turn off HT in Bios or set the Affinity Mask every time by hand....
About Large Pages:
How much memory does one need to consistently and safely allocate 2 GB for Hash? Is it 6GB or better 12GB?

Depends on the number of cores and tablebases you've got. On my 12 GB 12 core computers (117 GB of tablebases) I only get one or two engine starts with large pages. On my 32 GB 8 cores computer I get very many - in fact it never failed so far.
>I only get one or two engine starts with large pages
Do you mean two engine started at the same time?
No, restarts
Just a n00b question :
If I purchase the multi-processor Rybka (aka Deep Rybka), does it work on a single processor computer or (shudders) must I purchase both versions ?
Thanks...

Yes, works fine.
MP can work on 1 core.
I use Windows 7, Fritz 12 GUI.
With Deep Rybka 3 on, nothing else running, I have 4 processes (one per core) with a constant 100% CPU Usage.
With Deep Rybka 4 on, nothing else running, I have 4 processes (one per core) with an avarage 40% CPU Usage, and a 5% - 70% interval.
Any idea ?

Try on engine parameters:
Main Process Priority: Normal
Child Process Priority: Normal
To see if it helps.

Just tried, nothing changed.
By the way, my Rybka 3 is still 100% even with priority "low" for all processes, since there is nothing else running.

Can't reproduce, this is a new reported issue.
Priority doesn't lower CPU usage. It's just that other applications are allowed to steal time from Rybka. Did you lower CPU usage?
CPU Usage parameter is 100%.
The old main rule: closed and restarted Windows 7, and now CPU usage is 100% with Deep Rybka 4 too.
It's happening again!
If I use Deep Rybka 4, then some other engine, then Rybka 4 again, it can't get to 100% CPU usage.
Probably Rybka 4 leaves some garbage around, with Windows 7, when you quit it.

Vytron:
Have you seen an explanation of the various engine parameters or is that yet to come from Vas?
For instance, why do you think your Process Priority choices might work better than the defaults?

Any ideas on the best parameters for analyzing a position in the Sandbox? Thanks
Default are best.

Is possible the upgrade from Rybka 3 to Rybka 4 now or immediate future?
If you mean a price break for Rybka 3 users, no. (It's too complicated.)
