Larry your handicaping of Rybka is too strong for me. :-(  I can't compete with the 1600 rating.  I notice it's hitting 14 ply when I'm playing it.  So I have some questions:
Does allowing Rybka more time make it play stronger or is the handicap you installed independent of time setting. (If so, what time setting is the handicap about right)
I am using it with ponder on.  Did you make the handicap ratings with this setting on?
I'm using the Rybka II book and I'm usually in trouble rignt out of book.  Did you take the book into consideration when making up the handicap?
Thanks for your answers.
Poor me :-(

Rybka will keep thinking during a ponder situation (so that the user can see it), but she will save the move from the low-depth search and play that.

No, we didn't.

The ratings are based on fixed-depth searches, so I think that the problem is that you are playing with ponder on. Try with ponder off and report back how you do.

I'm happy to report there is a big difference between d=1 and d=14 with Rybka !  Still problems with my weak openings.

After you've played a few games I'd appreciate feedback on whether you think the level is too high, too low, or just about right for you.

I hope you get feedback from other players because I'm probably not a good indicator.  I have never really studied the game and I know my openings are weak.  I'm still getting into trouble in the opening.  I even tried following the book tree but when I get out of book I'm in a position that is too complicated and I don't understand the theory.  I can't solve the problem at blitz speed and Rybka does move too fast to give me any ponder time.  One problem is with Rybka moving fast I seem to get caught in the trap of playing fast also.  My rating is still going down vs Rybka.  I'm on several servers occasionally and my rating varies between 1600-1750.  I have set Rybka to 1600 with ponder off.  Maybe with some more practice I will do better but I doubt it.  I don't learn much by playing because my memory is bad now.  I probably repeat the same errors over and over.  :-)

The estimated ratings assume that you play at some sort of serious time limit. If you play faster than game/one hour I would expect you (or anyone) to lose to the level corresponding to your rating. As for the opening book, you should use some generic opening book set to maximum variety.

Thanks Larry, I will do just that.

Also, Mr. Walker, are you using the special handicap opening books based on rating in Aquarium? (and see my post below for a more important question!)

Indeed, I am a 1800 ELO player and Rybka is a hard opponent (even at far lower level). It plays like a weaker player struggling for his life in a tournament. This behavior looks simply realistic, and you cannot simply push wood to win ;-) There is a trap when setting the engine ELO at your level minus 200 points : you think "the computer MUST let me win, because I asked it to !". No, you must go and fetch the point.
So indeed, one should play at rate of 1hour/game or even better 40 moves / 2hr. For me current Rybka's settings are ok, except maybe its opening book usage should depend upon the UCI_Elo setting.
For example :
book_use_depth (in moves) = 5 +(UCI_Elo - 1200) /100

Are you using Aquarium to do this?  Because I thought Aquarium had a bug where it was playing too weakly on handicapped levels, so I'm confused as to how you are getting Rybka to play this way correctly.  Are you using the ELOLimitStrength feature in settings for the Rybka engine, rather than the similar handicap feature in the Aquarium GUI?  I think that must be it, but if you could confirm, I would be grateful.  Thanks.

Hello,
I'm not using a handicap book.  I was using the Rybka II.ctg book.  I am setting the engine rating in the engine section in Aquarium.  That is the one that Larry designed.  The GUI handicap in Aquarium is way too easy.  Seems this one is a little too hard for me.  Tomorrow I will try an easier book with ponder off and take more time to play.  I was playing blitz time (5/3).
