ok I set up a tournament on my Quad Core desktop which included Rybka 3 and Rybka 3 Dynamic. Whenever the two play each other the machine grinds to a halt and one of them freezes & looses on time after making only a few moves. It's almost as if the other Rybka 3 is using 100% of the four processors and everything jams up.

Task manager stops working, everything.

Total RAM 2 gig, 512MB for Hash per prog, Vista 64 bit OS

All other engine matches work ok.

ok finally got taskmanager working.
Even though I set 512MB hash for R3 (and taskmanager shows this is what is uses) somehow MY ENTIRE 2 GIGABYTES DISSAPPEARS WHEN RYBKA 3 RUNS!

What's going on? My memory usage is constantly at 100% when R3 is running

As a first test try to reduce the hash size to 256MB.

when hash is reduced to 256MB in total 1.6GB of RAM is being used. (when Rybka is shutdown my system uses 700-800MB RAM)

so basically this is JUST ok for rybka in single player mode (although 256mb hash is tiny) but for engine matches/tournaments involving two Rybka 3s it's unworkable

A 2-processor Rybka uses approximately 150 MB of memory in addition to hash. This'll most likely be doubled for 4 processors.

correct - just checked it

Hi,
Others may disagree but the amount of memory Vista eats is why I have stuck with XP64 ... If you only have 2Ghz of Ram it would be worth investing in a couple of 2x2GB sticks which also helps with large databases. Another option will be close down certain services you do not need and maybe get a memory management program.

Regards

my quad is stripped down to the bare minumum unfortunately. Only chessbase stuff on there, no anti virus or anything else

My Vista x64 eats as much as 256MB usually. Not so bad at all. I have 4 GB. 256 MB is close to nothing.

256??? Even Microsoft quote double that. 600-800MB is typical.

Hi,
I really cannot see a normal Vista using less than XP, run task manager( CTRL-ALT-DEL ) and see how much vista is uses on bootup

Regards

I have disabled some nasty services, so I can not say that I run default configuration. But really few: UAC, indexing, superfetching and thats all. Maybe with those the memory usage was 600MB.

You are free to do the maths yourself: my task manager process list 5 minutes ago.
I did not count Rybka, Shredder, ATI-s Catalyst, PoverDVD etc as Vista component.
