Why is this?

Italian, where have you been these few days? :-)
Almost 50% of the new posts mention this. R3 REPORTS around 50% of the nps figure that R232a used to, and REPORTS lower depths for the same amount of time. It does not affect the playing strength.

yes but in a 1/0 time frame Speed is crucial.  Doesnt matter how strong an engine is if it runs out of time it still loses :P

Regardless of the time given, when comparing R232a and R3, for the same given time R3 will (very likely) produce better play, and at the same time (almost sure) report (display) lower depth and less nps.

No

I can easily make my engine to seem 2 times slower in nodes per second by telling it to divide the number of nodes by 2 before printing it and substracting 1 from the depth before printing it and it is going to have no effect on playing strength.

You should learn not to believe data about nodes per second or depth.

We changed the time management a bit and Rybka takes more time now, this is intentional.

slow and steady wins the race I suppose.

Especially when it's not actually a race :)

That is true as I have noticed the total dismantling of Rybka  2.3.2amp and 2.1d3 64 bit in my 1/1 tournament so far....Rybka 3 es el capitan!!

Try switching Persistent Hash on with some low write depth, it will make her play faster :)
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2008-08-09 18:26
lol ;)

Or try a very high persistant hash write depth like 64 for blazing fast play, too.
Parent - - By Italian81 (****) Date 2008-08-09 20:26
does this cripple her strength?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2008-08-09 20:59

> does this cripple her strength?

Yes, that's the alternative to losing on time.

I guess all super heroes (engines in this case) must have their own strengths and weaknesses Sacrifice speed either speed or strength.  I just fish Rybka could be insanely fast and strong at the same time :p

just don't put ponder on , cause i made that mistake and rybka lost 4-0 to crafty of all engines ! :) 2 1 games and lost all on time
Parent - - By Italian81 (****) Date 2008-08-09 21:52
with ponder off the engine does not think on oponents time correct?  So one would think that this would actually slow the engine down.  Am I backwards on my thinking?
Parent - - By pokerpawn (***) Date 2008-08-09 22:02
don't know , all i know is i checked on ponder and he lost games on time , the last he did not make 20 moves before running out of time
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2008-08-09 22:33
This may be caused because Crafty was using +95% of the CPU in Rybka's time so Rybka didn't have time to think.
Parent - - By pokerpawn (***) Date 2008-08-09 22:41
ah i see , i guess ponder is just not an option in fast games ;)

No, it's not meant to be used on 1CPU computers.
