Some analysis of the test set on the Prodeo forum:

Interesting!

https://prodeo.actieforum.com/t450-back-to-act4-some-analysis#3699
"...against the ACT4.EPD test file. I then analyzed the results with this program:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gytB_d7IppVhN8eFvF15rk3DYr9b1gCD/view?usp=sharing
which consumes the Arena log file and the EPD test file and creates a report.
"

His link just gives the file repcount.c .  I do not know C so cannot use it.

You have to run it from the command line.

You analyze an EPD file using Arena under Engines/Automatic Analysis
You choose the output files for the protocol file and the comprehensive analysis file.
When the analysis finishes, from the command line you do this:

repcount < c:\location\comprehensive.ana > analysis.dat

where :
c:\location\comprehensive.ana is the name you chose for the comprehensive analysis file
and analysis.dat is the name chosen for you new report file.

Thank you for your repcount.7z!

I will unzip for its repcount.exe and try it with Wine (5.0.3) before tommorrow.

----
I did not have much luck with Linux:

# cd to folder with his repcount.c and his Areana files act.out (comprehensive) and ACT4.edp (to recreate his result act4.dat)
# make executable:

$ gcc repcount.c -o repcount

# your instructins:

$ ./repcount < act4.out > output.dat

# output.dat:
#" data file H:\ACT4.epd
#  is missing"
# His act4.out (comprehensive) says "Analysis of H:\ACT4.epd" (is where repcount is getting the path and filename)
# but I do not have a H:\ , but I do have ACT4.epd in the same folder:
#
# So, delete my new output.dat, text edit in his act4.out replace "H:\" with <my full path (leading "/")>/ACT4.epd
# try again, output.dat now says: " <my full path>/is missing"
#
# Also I tried replacing "H:\" with "./", and with "/", and with "" (nothing)
# always "data file <echos path I used as above>ACT4.edp is missing".
#
# So, my Linux executable is finding his act4.out (comprehensive)
# but no mater how I replace-all in its original "H:\ACT4.epd" to "<my path>/ACT4.epd (in his act4.out) it strangely cannot find it although it echos my changed path with ...ACT4.epd and it is there.

This program assumes that you did the analysis. If you move or delete the files before you run it, you will get those errors.

Thanks again for the .exe and instructions !!!

# I opened (Wine simulated) a Windows cmd window:
$ wine cmd.exe

# cd using Wine convention Z:\home... to my folder (Z: 1st, \'s not Linux /'s)
# with his act4.rep and ACT4.epd (from his Prodeo Forum post)
cd Z:<my path>

# text edit replace-all in his act.rep
# "H:\ACT4.epd" with "Z:<my path>\ACT4.epd

# your instructions:
repcount.exe < act4.rep > output.dat

# my new output.dat file
# is an exact match of his (from his Prodeo Forum post) act4.dat

I now should not have any problem with your repcount.exe using my own .rep and .epd files !!!

(I have Wine Arena 3.5.1 .exe, I do not know yet if I will have to text convert Linux to Windows the .rep if I use Arena 3.10 Linux).

P.S. My previous Linux difficulty: I could have complied the repcount.c wrong and/or there is some Linux path problem I do not understand.

I hope that you have a lot of fun with it.
I like Linux a lot and I have Ubuntu and Centos here at home.
But my most powerful machine is Windows because (tragically) I have some programs that only run under windows.
It might be worthwhile to try them again under wine (it has been a long time).
I am fed up with Windows Update rebooting in the middle of the night and throwing away all the work that should have been accomplished.

Unless you need it can you unplug/turn-off the internet connection? My old Phenom/Windows 10 is still great for web/email when my Ryzen/Ubuntu is on chess, too light a use to be bothered by their insistent updates.

My Ubuntu did not seem to 'get along' with Nvidia.com's Cuda or any "3rd Party" (except Cudnn and Cute Chess .deb, and Snap apps like Scid vs PC seem okay so far, and Discord although last time it made me download to update and I have 2 in 'Show Applications' now).
After a while their individual updates seem to 'get out of sync' to incompatibility - I think. (From what I read, I do not have it, Steam is still committed to actively supporting Ubuntu).
I luckily invented a hack to use Ubuntu's nvidia-cuda-toolkit instead, no repo link to Nvidia at all.
But still Lc0 has stopped working twice after updates so far, both times I changed the 'proprietary' driver back and forth or some such without having to attempt anything major.
Recently its Suspend suddenly stopped working - it goes directly to 'Log out' instead now with no warning that everything is closed, no 'Save?' option.
Ubuntui's official site says "not all hardware supports [it]" but my 'hardware' used to until last week or so .. :confused:
I am not anti-Windows, I just have free chess only so Ubuntu sort of keeps in the same theme :smile:

unfortunately, ubuntu is now following the automated updates model of Windows

I think maybe if I install the server version only with no GUI maybe it won't do that

> ubuntu is now following the automated updates model of Windows

But it can be defeated:

https://mitrahosting.id/how-to-disable-automatic-updates-on-on-ubuntu-21-04-hirsute-hippo/

See my screenshot.

I started 21.04 with a pre-release 'Daily Build' in March.
Ever since Snaps have been updated only after the session ends for Restart or Power-off.

This is great! Thank you and Dann very much!!

This is all I have time for right now. Hopefully I can soon analyze the results to look for positions solved by only one or the other.

Quite surprising jump between 64 and 256 seconds for Stockfish. Nice graph.

I am glad I did that because I suspected that Stockfish was 'flattening'.
Thanks, its just LibreOffice Draw that comes with Ubuntu (and Drawing Ubuntu apt install).
I will post repcount / more details later this week.

The longest Stockfish was 98) 236 seconds - no Lc0 solution.
It took most of the time on 1.Nxg6.
After entering the solution it took Stockfish only 5 seconds to find 2.Bf5 for an instant 11 point evaluation drop:
30/31+  00:05  +(for black, -+) 6.02  1...Kh5       {no other moves}
30/31   00:05  -(for black, +-) 4.98  1...Kh5 2.Bf5 { " " }

PhoenixStein

The first Stein net trained without any Leela Training Data! It's not really done yet and currently in the process of selling 20 series GPUs and preordering 30 series GPU which should allow for training nets both much bigger and faster due to your support! So current plan is to finish this up and then increase net size once new cards arrive. I believe this has about 40 elo more to gain first though!

Unfornately, it's PhoenixStein 1.7 which is paid.  On a side note I used Lc0 v28rc1.
Parent - By MrKris (****) Date 2021-07-16 01:10
Thanks for the info.!  (At least his charge looks somewhat reasonable.)

Your 1.7 changed to 1.Ne6 at 38 seconds (and stayed with it):
24/53  00:36   1,676k  46k  -0.47  Nf8xg6 ...
24/53  00:38   1,877k  48k  +2.41  Nf8-e6 ...

My free PS on my 2060 (same Lc0) did not find it:
27/54  10:25   14,999k  24k  -0.55  1.Nxg6 ...
16.4 times longer, and 8 times the nodes - oh well, it was worth a try.

At first I thought it was linear, but then I saw you quadruple time each time, which means it takes exponential effort increase to get linear improvement.
Parent - By MrKris (****) Date 2021-07-14 04:22

> you quadruple time each time

Yes, powers of 4 on the x-axis so I should have graphed the log base 4 of the solved counts - I think.

I added ShashChess 17.1ms (MCTS Single) and Lc0 with the medium-sized LS15 net.

(I ran SC in Wine Arena.exe, 14 threads instead of 16 so 288" instead of 256" and 16GBh instead of 24, simultaneously with (Linux) Arena Lc0 2 threads.
{It should have been 16/14 X 256 = 292.5" however, I incorrectly just added 1/8th?!.}
Then I manually counted the time divisions so not to run the shorter ones separately.)

ShashChess had an amazing 'quick solve' record so I showed its report and counts.
LS 15 was quite close to the largest 69637, just less.

From my above.
It looks like Stockfish_21070310, abrok avx2, solved 1 of the 3, and another longer than my above max. 256 seconds.
Above I tried ShashChess's "MCTS Single" setting because someone on TalkChess mentioned it favorably, maybe it helped in others though, I do not know.

That original analysis feature is really neat

Thanks!  I discovered it by accident:

I opened his ACT4-ana.epd file in Arena (3.10 Linux should be the same for 3.5.1 Windows) 'EPD' tab to read the comments there,
then made the moves and my short comments to post, then Game - Export to Clipboard - as PGN for the post
and the Comment was already in the PGN from the ACT4-ana.epd.
