After 36 games each Stockfish is in a 4th - 6th tie with Rubi and Stoofvlees behind Lc0, Dragon & Komodo ?! ?!

All games 1.e4 c6 2.Bc4
All so far continued 2...d5 3.exd5 cxd5, then most 4.Bb3, but many 4.Bb5+.

in progress, latest scores

1 Lc 21.5/36 +7 -0 =29
2 Dr 21.0/36 +7 -1 =28
3 Ko 19.5/36 +5 -2 =29 (no nnue!)
4 Ru 18.5/36 +3 -2 =31 4-6 tie
5 Sf 18.5/36 +1 -0 =35 4-6 tie (only 0-1 vs Xi)
6 Sv 18.5/36 +3 -2 =31 4-6 tie
7 Et 13.5/36 +0 -9 =27
8 Xi 13.0/36 +0 -10 =24

So far (slightly before the above standings) :
4.Bb3: white +2 =56 -11 , 30/69 , 43%
4.Bb5+: white +0 =51 -9 , 25.5/60 , 43%
Overall: whitie +2 =107 -20 , 55.5/129 , 43%

White has a disadvantage, =+,  all played 4.Bb3 or 4.Bb5+ which loses a tempo:
rnbqkbnr/pp2pppp/8/1B1p4/8/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQK1NR b KQkq - 1 4

and is the same as 1.c3 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.cxd4 Bb4+ colors exchanged:
rnbqk1nr/pppp1ppp/8/8/1b1P4/8/PP2PPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 1 4

Lc0, the leader, games as black:
4.Bb3: +5 -0 =6 , 8/11 , 72%
4.Bb5+: +2 -0 =3 , 3.5/5 , 70%

- - -

In its first 16 games as white so far Stockfish has played 4.Bb5+?! 14 times.
And 4.Bb3 only 2 times.

So far Stockfish has only won 1 game (with black vs. Xiphos) and has drawn all the rest?!
Stockfish (at 32 games each) has played Xiphos 4 times:
Xi (4.Bb3) 0-1 Sf ; Xi (4.Bb3) 1/2-1/2 Sf
Sf (4.Bb5+) 1/2-1/2 Xi ; Sf (4.Bb5+) 1/2-1/2 Xi.

Stockfish lost a game to Stoofvlees (game 312). Not sure if 39. Qd6 is the start of White's problems. Maybe 38. Qxc6? That doesn't look too great here. Not losing - yet.  It certainly goes downhill pretty quickly for Stockfish after this.

Don't want to analyze with a phone. . .

Thanks! I'll get back to this game!

For now, I just happened to get the standings after all have played 90 games.
Stockfish is finally winning a few -although to Ru, Ko, Et, and Xi only so far-, I presume because the repetition allows it to randomly get around to the better moves that it only plays a minority of the time for this opening.
Or maybe the ave. quality of the bottom half's moves are finally showing.

1 Lc0 (3640) 54/90
2 Dragon (3600) 52.5/90
3 Stoofvlees (3553) 50/90
4 Stockfish (3862) 49/90
5 Rubi (3471) 43/90
6 Komodo (3526) 42.5/90
7 Ethereal (3590) 38/90

Home for a few days.  Komodo 2609.00 is having a pretty dismal tournament.

Other than beating up on Xiphos (+5 =9 -0), it has only three other wins. Two against Ethereal and one against Stoofvlees. Zero wins against Lc0, Stockfish, Dragon (+0 =9 -5!) and Rubi.

I have been looking at Stockfish v Stoofvlees (game 312) using Lc0 v0.28.0-dev+git.7b0a396 (CUDA fp16 - default settings - with net 69146) and an RTX 2080Ti GPU. Maybe 37. Nxc6 (instead of 37. g3) might have been better. Only 11 minutes infinite analysis so far.

28   Stoofvlees II a18   3467
* 1 cpu because they just have GTX cards for Stoof: http://www.cegt.net/testers/testers.html

Stockfish has caught up a little, but if it finishes still below Stoofvlees that would not be so good.

I just noticed that CCRL http://ccrl.chessdom.com/ccrl/4040/index.html
took Komodo off the "Index" list, just Dragon (Dragon and Komodo are on their "Complete list". By the way no StockfishClassic although very roughly Sf-to-SfClassic = Dragon-to-Komodo.)
http://ccrl.chessdom.com/ccrl/4040/rating_list_all.html
Komodo 14 64-bit 4CPU  3415 {later at CCC}
RubiChess 2.1 64-bit 4CPU  3408 {2.2-RC at CCC}

Now not looking good for Komodo at 6th and Rubi at 5th, maybe Rubi has improved more than Ko. since 14/2.1

I read your "Nxc6 it is" but I had already done this:

Thanks for pointing this out. An extremely interesting game!

Of course humans already knew from when they invented the Caro-Kann that 1.e4 c6 2.Bc4 is ?.
An online DB has the most common  human moves -and namesake- as 3.Bb3!? dxe4 4.Qh5!?, I don't think any at CCC have tried that.

Lc0 & Harmon 13.1b have 37.Nxc6 as best and near 0.00, it is very complicated but Stockfish could have avoided the loss!

But Stockfish is "completely entombed piece blind" so it thought 37.g3?? allowing 37...f3, expecting 37...fxg3??, is 0.00 and so it played it.

#312 Stockfish 0-1 Stoofvlees
My comments, evaluations & depths from CCC:

13. Bh2 {0.00/49} Nf5 {+0.31/18} Stockfish's 0.00 is wrong. White probably needs an improvement before 13.Bh2 - the worst bad B, white O-O position, and K-side dark square color complex weakness that I've seen in a long time.

36. Ne5 {0.00/58} g4 {+0.11/16} 37. g3 {0.00/54} f3 {+0.64/13} Stockfish's 0.00 is still wrong - more so since the game has progressed as expected from 13.Bh2.
37.g3?? entirely entombs its B --same as a B down--, Stoofvlees jumped from +0.11 to +0.64, by 0.53 - being an engine it can not give a winning score --even if strategically won-- until all its search branch ends are winning.

39. Qd6 {-2.09/47} Bg6 {+1.63/16} The game confirms the human obvious that white loses because its a B down after 37. g3?? f3, if there was a way for white to push its Q-side pawns and/or release its B Stockfish  would have found that.

> Maybe 38. Qxc6? That doesn't look too great here. Not losing - yet.

Without more comparisons/mesurements my 12x CCC TC below looks not too bad.

As above white is a B down after 37...f3 even though Stoofvlees only gave black +0.64.
Here Lc0 had 38.Qd1 for a long time so I tried that at G/2 hours +15 seconds. At the end Stockfish had 34 mins. left on its clock (for only 14 moves!?) and Lc0 had over 1 hour left. [Site "R7 2700X | RTX 2060"]

Yes, sorry - I think you were probably in a hurry (on the road) and missed that even Howard Carter (of King Tut's tomb) probably could not find white's B on h2.

 You are right! I wanted to try and make sense of such an oversight by Stockfish and used a positional engine (Lc0) to try and find the problem.

I agree with your asessment that 13. Bh2 looks dubious. I am wondering If 9.Bf4 is the culprit. Perhaps a move like c4 makes more sense. I am curious if pure nn would make a different choice here. Maybe 9. c4 or 9. Re1.

I am constantly traveling inside my own province on job related duties. Lots of driving. Covid never slowed things down for me. We were deemed "essential" right from the start.

I suspected 9.Bf4 also. The only thing about the all-NNUE's is that they are somewhat old: Cfish is only up to March 17th Sf, Sugar 2.10 is 23 days old before the major Sf net changes I think.

I am sort of saving my energy on the early moves until it is done and then try to 'fine tooth comb' with Scid vs PC Opening Report, maybe all the games with Lc, Dr & Sf as white, then them with black.
I will post that this thread when I do it.

Experiment:
Base case Caro-Kann is -0.12: 1.d3 e5 2.c3 d5 Lc0-69272 PV=4 3 mins.: {best -0.08 3.Nf3 & 3.e4} next best 3.d5 -0.12 transforms into white having the regular Caro-Kann by colors exchanged (not reversed)
- to avoid any "color cheat" in the evaluations (not that its used by top engines).

From the experiment it looks like the diagram is as bad for white as the Caro-Kann start is for black - maybe worse, though maybe I've been looking at it for too long.

Then again there is an old, 'great classic' middlegame books, I forget which one, tempo count scheme (meant for a 'first look' approximation) minimum moves from their start square for the existing pieces and pawn (note pawn moves do count in it):
White: d2-d4, Ng1-f3, O-O = 3 tempi,
Black: a7-a6, c7-c6, d7-d5, e7-e6, f7-f6 = 5 tempi -- unusual for black to be ahead in this system.

Maybe I'll have time for a game later (with Lc0 0.28rc1 I hope).

I would be worried as white: vs. the 'coffeehouse' moves more or less played right away ..g5, ..h5 and ..Ra7-f7/g7/h7 white should have something convincing - interestingly Lc0 below is looking at the QID style b3 with Ba3 seemingly to avoid the B being bad; and, h4 sometimes further seemingly fearing a K-side attack.

In the CCC game after 8...e6 before 9.Bf4, Lc0-69272, PV=6, 11 mins.

Game #25 looks more interesting that I had assumed it would be.

Dragon has so far played 100 games and this is its only loss.

Starting at move 88: for the last many, many, moves the evaluations were trending toward lower, Dragon is already at 0.00.

However, Lc0 went from =+ to -+ in just 19 moves.
After 105...dxc4 white is helpless with its R on a3 entombed.

Why isn't "entombed" a common chess term?
Because the concept is so obvious to humans
that even amateurs rarely allow it.

Evaluations and depths from CCC, Lc0 ponder moves from CCC, with "<<<" if different than what Dragon played, then Dragon's move is given a ?! or ? if Lc0's evaluation increased.

Lc0's pawn sacrifice 92...f6! is extraordinarily subtle.

Stockfish has crawed its way up to 3rd, although only by 1/2 point!?

1 Lc0 (3640) 66/110
2 Dragon (3600) 64.0/110
3 Stockfish (3862) 61.0/110
4 Stoofvlees (3553) 60.5/110
5 Rubi (3471) 53.5/110
6 Komodo (3526) 50.0/108
7 Ethereal (3590) 43.5/108
8 Xiphos (3428) 39.5/110

Part of the reason is:
Sf vs Lc0: 16 draws, Sf vs Dragon 16 draws;
Sv vs Lc0: 2 losses, Sv vs Dragon  1 loss.

#405 Lc0 1-0 Stoofvlees
Lc0 had said 0.00 for almost the whole long game.

After 145.Kg1 Lc0 said 145...Kb5 146.Kh2 Kb4 0.00:
8/8/6p1/p6p/1k5P/1P3R2/3q1BP1/6K1 b - - 33 145

However Stoof played 145...Ka3??, instantly losing to the extremely simple tactic 146.Bc5+ Kb2 147.Rf2 winning black's Q for its R.
Black's K moved to a square where the B check forces it to the second rank then the R pins the Q - 7 plies total including no unpin, RxQ and ..KxR!
