Up Topic The Rybka Lounge / Test Positions / 200+ moves ETB ending: Lc0 wins 2 out of 3 without Syzygy
- - By MrKris (****) Date 2020-12-30 02:48
From a position from MikeB at:
http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=76172&start=10#p877632
It is a 6-piece but with a very unusually long solution. (7-piece has many long solutions thougth.)

Sonetimes I like these just to see what an engine can do without Syzygy.

By no Syzygy I mean neither engine.
Only the very lastest Stockfish held to a draw.

Each of the White wins were actually draws because of the 50 move rule. In the first two losses that is clearly indicated by the sudden change in score after the engine is forced to play beyond the 50th move.

In the last game against Black Diamond the indicated Stockfish engine 20090418 gives an erroneous score. Around the indicated ply depth the engine sees no win as played here by the abrok download engine 20090418

Yes, the 50-move rule is a problem - I mentioned that in my thread title "200+ moves ETB ending: c0 wins 2 out of 3 without Syzygy"

I should have mentioned that I like the 50-move rule off for Stockfish. This is an interesting subject for me.
As you note it does make a difference!

My point was, as I wrote in my post: "Sonetimes I like these just to see what an engine can do without Syzygy."
ETB win/losses in under 50 moves are generally too easy for engines, I think, even if they do not have Syzygy.

The 50-move rule cannot be turned off for Lc0. (Sad for ICCF players - it will show a near-zero drawish score in ETB wins that take over 50 moves - win claims based on 6 or 7 ETB's are valid in the ICCF.
So an ICCF player never knows if they are winning, drawing or losing if using only Lc0!)
I can be turned off in Arena, but not CuteChess GUI (but with Stockfish's off it will show the appropriate win/loss evaluation for it even it CuteChess stops it as a draw).

I will never find it again, but somewhere (TalkChess?, fishcooking?) someone who I thought a Sf contributor, or someone I thought of interest at the time (though I could be wrong about that) wrote:

"The 50-move rule is for humans. I does not really make sense for engines."

A case in point is that several years ago FIDE extended the 50-move rule in some cases - thanks of course to ETB's.
However they soon re-instated it because they found no case of a player using/knowing the modern knowledge only players trying to 'flag' their opponent.

https://github.com/syzygy1/Cfish
"Syzygy50MoveRule
Disable to let fifty-move rule draws detected by Syzygy tablebase probes count as wins or losses. This is useful for ICCF correspondence games"
I wonder the Lc0 and CuteChess authors/contributors are even aware of that.

Thanks for informative reply. Seeing the score changes at the 50 move point I assumed the long wins were something the engines missed within the bounds of the established rules of chess.

I did check if Stockfish had included a 50 move parameter option or switch but did not see one.

> "The 50-move rule is for humans. It does not really make sense for engines."

I smiled at that because the raison d'etre of chess engines was to play and improve the game by aiding chess players. If chess engines are to use a separate set of rules then they play a chess variant and there are many of those but that creates a disassociation from the game played by most and with it will go the player interest. Nonetheless point taken.

Thanks. Interesting problem: FIDE or ICCF.

> I did check if Stockfish had included a 50 move parameter option or switch but did not see one.

The 'Syzygy50MoveRule' UCI option

At the bottom is a screenshot from Arena showing the checkbox.

Stockfish_20122510 from http://abrok.eu/stockfish
Syzygy-6 with Syzygy50MoveRule true {default):  0.01* {I do not know why not 0.00, Linux?}
Sy.6 with Sy.50mr false:  152.67
no Syzygy 0.25 {in Arena 'restart engine' 1st or Arena will use your last Syzygy settings}
6k1/5n2/8/8/8/5n2/1RK5/1N6 w - - 0 1

* with Syzygy50MoveRule true it still seems to play the correct moves, Sf both sides: 1.Kd3 N3g5 2.Kd4 Ne6+ 3.Kd5 then turn 'Syzygy50MoveRule' off/false: 3...Nc7 -152.65 (lost, +- to mover here, not white)

The engine may require the 6-man Syzygy bases. I only use 3-4-5-man Syzygy when even running with the Syzygy50move rule option disabled in both the Fritz 14 and Shredder GUIs the Stockfish abrok compiles give less than 0.1 to White's favour.

In the Black Diamond vs Stockfish game both GUIs announce 50 move rule draws on Black's move after 50.Rd7.

Following the Uri Blas identification of the Stockfish false mate announcements when the engine failed to correctly identify the 50 move rule, the corrective action eventually addressed the error therefore I was surprised to see Stockfish indicating such a high score that suggested it was not the abrok engine that was used.

May be of interest; when playing in the Hiarcs Chess Explorer, the GUI (not the engine) announces #262 with 1.Kd3 indicating the engines did not play out the Syzygy base endgame with precision being 9 moves short of the indicated best defence.

I always use abrok Stockfish.

Yes, Shredder.com https://www.shredderchess.com/online/endgame-database.html
has #262 also. There is a problem somewhere, maybe Syzygy or Stockfish, but I do have time to investigate further.
