344 Elo in 13 years  plus another ~100 due to adaption of Elos in 2011-2012

http://magictour.free.fr/elo1995.GIF
Parent - - By Gaмßito (****) Date 2019-08-15 15:28
Your ''344 Elo'' is definitely WRONG. Certainly in 13 years there has been a BIGGER Elo improvement than that.

In 2006, Rybka 1.2 and later Rybka 2.1 were the best engines. Today those Rybka engines are around 650 Elo points below Stockfish 10 (using all engines 1 core).
And Stockfish 10, it's already outdated. The last SF dev version is already +30 Elo stronger!

CCRL is clearly misleading; their list is based in very few games (lot of engines with less than 500 games) which leads to a BIG ERROR margin. Also they are putting a stupid SF's derivate engine like ''Sugar'' in first place instead of Stockfish 10!? Well, the only way to see what place ''Stockfish 10'' (a 100% legal engine) really has you need to use the ''Complete List'' link, but that's ridiculous. That they prefer to ''hide'' the ''honest work'' by many people (for so many years!) of a super and brilliant engine like Stockfish!

I don't know who makes such silly decisions there but I really recommend you to use OTHER list.

Regards,
Gaмßito.

make it 444 with the 2011/2012 correction.

these are changes from year to year, but Elo is not linear,
So, it's better to say there were +38 Elo in average per year.
(see also the chart, which I added later :  http://magictour.free.fr/elo1995.GIF  )

The CCRL-problems which you describe should only have a
small effect for this statistics, and only temporary, not the whole trend, IMO.

Rybka 2.2 is listed at 3117 in 2006 (64-bit 4 CPU) and at 2975 now, no big difference
if you consider that it had lost 100 CCRL-Elo in 2011,2012 due to adjustment.

Actually comparing the CCRL-Elos of the same engines from year to year you get 119 :

2007 ,- 1  2
2008 ,+ 7  4
2009 ,- 4  4
2010 ,- 1  5
2011 ,-75  7
2012 ,-32  9
2013 ,+ 3 12
2014 ,- 2 22
2015 ,- 2 27
2016 ,- 3 28
2017 ,- 7 32
2018 ,- 2 49

Excellent chart!!
Below was too fast (for vs. back then) or too few games.
Probably Rybka would have done better if more of the in-between engines where played
because they where all 100 to 150 Elo over 2nd in their peak times.

Thanks for the history and data!

I once had a friend with a 386 125MHz with a forgotten brand chess software he bought at a local store (essentially before internet shopping).
I had a Mac 100Mhz PPC with ChessMaster 2000. This was before the word "core" was invented, "microprocessors" where a core.
We played a mini-match with the two, 40/90, over the phone (landlines, cords to the wall, from our homes).
Mine won. In one game the CM2000 sacrificed the exchange for an unstoppable passed pawn, we where impressed.
