So much for the better...the peddled in letting people 'exchange'....nah, call it what it was: give away chess materials for free which is totally unethical and probably criminal.

Yes it looks like the Legendary Immortal Chess Site has addition all of their chess links to many old and famous chess engines and programs have not been archived or imaged..So all of that "Chess history" "Legal or Not" is also gone...Most of The History Of Ippolit/Robbolito, Heron Impossible, Android, Houdini, Old Shredder gui's Fruit Gui's.. Deep Junior.. Russian programs, East European chess programs was also contained on that site...All is now lost...

But would you be willing to go to jail for that?
Parent - - By Vegan (****) Date 2019-07-28 05:31

It's easy to have a pirate forum where you avoid that because you have users responsible for what they upload. The best thing legit owners of material can do is applying the DMCA to force you to take down illegal links, and if you don't they use it to make your server take down your entire site or your ISP to kick you out from the Internet. But no jail.

Then again, thepiratebay has managed to remain operative while spreading pirated material via torrents and magnet links, so legit owners have to learn that piracy is here to stay, and if someone wants to use something for free, they'll find a way. Which is good because it turns out piracy is the best way to advertise your product, first, because a lot of people have the money, and use it to test software without paying, but if it's good they go ahead and buy it. Second, because such people use pirate mediums to find out about stuff (if someone took the time to buy the thing and release a pirate version, it's probably worth looking at. There's several AAA games without pirate versions, and you do have to buy them to play them. Why? Because there's no demand for them, the games are bad, nobody cares to play them, some are even re-released as freeware for everyone to play them legally, and nobody cares.) Third, because people pirating good stuff are going to tell people that the stuff is good, and those people might buy the software, which wouldn't have happened without the piracy option. Lastly, software that manages to slow down piracy has been created, at least you get 2 months where if people want to play your stuff, they have no option but to buy it, but that has decreased their sales because such methods have had terrible consequence for legit buyers, like leaving their disc unusable (wrongly detecting that it was pirated) or their hardware unusable (because they can't make copies of the game to pirate it, but they can't make copies of anything else either.)

Piracy increases sales so the Immortal Chess forum is doing a service to computer chess.

I agree on all the points here.

I have a feeling that the vast majority of items people download on these sites...are things they would never have bought anyway.

Did someone save the (legal) content? Or is there a successor page?
