Mark, there are lots of guys who have better hardware than me,i play 95% of my games on a quad as my 12 core is unstable and I cannot fix it.
I am not making this up I know zilch about computers and just try to play chess to the best of my ability.
So if any of you guys think you are beaten by my hardware are talking rubbish.
I stick to a few openings I have much experience of.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) Date 2014-05-26 00:54
Paul, Better hardware does not always mean wins as you have proven with your quad. In fact my best results over the years were with my Quad laptop i had.
I also know very little about computers, why don't you get your friend Tony round to fix it? Or are just waiting for the next big thing?
Believe me i never enter a match thinking I'm beaten no matter what hardware my opponent has.
My problem is i play to many off beat openings and then come unstuck.

Tony lives nearly 200 miles from me and has probs of his own.

Fair enough.

>12 core is unstable and I cannot fix it

Hi Paul, You should have phoned me with the symptoms and when the problems started etc etc etc ..... It must be a couple of years since I built it and it could be something very simple. As you know I could prob comes to your place in July but your always welcome to come here for Sunday dinner and bring the comp with you which I maybe able to fix on the day. It could prob do with a clean out of dust, clean and refit the heatsinks with some fresh Artic Silver etc and then clean the OS .... I can check to see if a BIOS update is available which it should be after all this time ... If you have had a BSOD that can reset some things in the BIOS which maybe the problem. Even a fresh reinstall of the OS and the chess software can be done, I can burn you a disk of my latest updated database etc etc ...

Regards
Tony

My hardware is from the era of Dinosaurs.
6 year old HP laptop core 2 :-) I'm proud of him.

For this reason this tour will be my last.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) Date 2014-05-29 15:07

Parent - - By David Evans (****) Date 2014-05-29 15:19

Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) Date 2014-06-08 09:06
It is a lot i know.
Parent - - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-05 22:14 Edited 2014-06-05 22:20
It's always the same three players that hold up the tournament as long as possible. I will never play in any tour where they are playing again. I will always see who is playing before I sign up.

Players these days want to win games by simply outwaiting their opponent, not outwitting their opponent. It's this reason this tour will be my last also.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) Date 2014-06-05 22:35
I dont quite understand this, you only have 30 days +1 hour to play all your game moves, most corr
tournaments give you much longer than this.
What is the point in complaining about people using their time wisely.
Although I do not know, I would imagine a number of players in tournament have other things to do with their life and chess is just a hobby with them.
They play within the rules as far as I see.
Parent - - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-05 22:55

> They play within the rules as far as I see

Yeah they play within the rules, but that don't mean I have to play with them anymore,

>  I would imagine a number of players in tournament have other things to do with their life and chess is just a hobby with them.

I don't think anyone is a "professional" corr. chess player.

The $100 I promised will go to anyone who can beat one of them on time.

> What is the point in complaining about people using their time wisely.

Plus, what is so "wise" about using 90% of your time getting out of book, and then making a lot of hurried moves at the end? I don't get it, but you're the expert,
Parent - - By Morpheus (****) Date 2014-06-06 19:38
Perhaps THEY are watching the game the other participants in their 90%:yell:

And seriously at my example in recent times not spend a lot of time on the game. I have other obligations in life
Parent - - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-07 15:58

>  I have other obligations in life.

Everybody has, but sometimes you have to multi-task, like walk and chew gum at the same time etc., etc....

If people don't want to play, then why join?
Parent - - By Morpheus (****) Date 2014-06-07 16:25

>>sometimes you have to multi-task,

Yes agree.

Primo. But Time factor is also the strategy of some players
Secundo ..I also like Mark do not have any problems with my opponents taking as much time as they like,

BTW. I remember a certain race.

Gentleman,

I have moved some posts from the cross table thread to here as they are off topic on the cross table thread and are general chat about the event.

Whilst I can understand it can feel irritating for some players to feel like you are waiting around for days for the next set of games to start, some of the players in these games do have 15 days still remaining on their clocks and have played 40 moves. So it is not like they have been sitting on their positions just wasting the time away.

The time control and three games per round were always going to produce longer rounds with the likelihood of more games going into zeitnot.

With increasing talk of- oh, I am not going to play if these players do not play at the super rapid pace I want them to, I am not able to spend more than 5 secs per move, I have other things I want to do, the competition is not big enough for me, the computer is now performing tasks that were previously performed by dogs, it is looking almost certain that this will be the final year for WBCCC.

A rather sad end to a format that had a lot of potential.

I will still attempt to run the competition in 2015 and see who enters as I will support the keen participants. Those that aren't interested will just choose not to enter.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) Date 2014-06-06 20:27
I don't have any problems with my opponents taking as much time as they like, those are the rules just deal with it.

Just to let you know i will be playing in next years tour. Only ill health will prevent me from playing.

Best wishes,

Mark.

+1. same here.
- - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-10 14:27
It's amazing that all the players who "had other obligations" suddenly can move very fast, I guess the other obligations weren't that important after all.
Parent - - By David Evans (****) Date 2014-06-10 17:42
Or maybe they are moving fast because they have other obligations and are just banging out fast moves because they are short on time.

It could be either way.

Parent - - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-10 18:06
Being short on time is just another sign of mismanagement of the clock.
Parent - - By David Evans (****) Date 2014-06-10 20:15
Being short on time could mean many things.

i am down on time myself in my game due to a holiday during play.

Then i play fast because i don't have time to dwell on my moves due to high level of an analysis on corr games.
Parent - - By Scott (*****) Date 2014-06-10 22:57
Whatever excuse floats your boat....
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) Date 2014-06-10 23:12
David is a very strong player who has supported this tournament from the start,he believes other tournaments are more important to him in his quest and who are we to argue with this.
I am only too pleased to have had the opportunity of playing against David and wish more players of his calibre would play in WBCCC.
Just my 2 cents.
Parent - - By David Evans (****) Date 2014-06-11 07:59
Thanks Paul I find it sad that Scott thinks that way I may have my system running over many many hours looking at my corr games as I try and win places in finals and get me first corr norm.

I have won all there is to win in freestyle over the years and now I turn to a different challenge that gets me blood going.

This type of chess does not cut it for me its the truth not an excuse.

But I will finish my games and with luck lose none.

Again scott I find your remarks sad.
Parent - By The Wizard (***) Date 2014-06-11 09:10
Hi, Be it correspondence or OTB how someone manages their time is entirely down to the individual. At least with this online play the moves do not get lost in the post lol

You mean your "team" has won over individual players, just to clarify.

I am withdrawing as of now.

I have also won freestyle titles playing alone and as a team.

David, thought Suj and You are of the same team?
Parent - By David Evans (****) Date 2014-06-12 08:23
Correct Alvin i have played games with suj and alone sometimes with other's such is the nature of freestyle.

But always played respectfully and never criticised other's.

I have also helped some people playing alone just to be of help.

Hello to all players. I had some serious personal issues which caused my rash actions. I received a letter from Garvin and decided to continue the tournament if there are no objections.

I sincerely apologize and will finish the tour.

I'm with you Paul. One thing about this tournament and it's format, some real friendship's are made. Some, at least IMO are like family.

I saw you put a post up a couple of days ago that said something like "we take care of our own"

That quote really gave me a more positive outlook,

P. S., I owe David a special apology.
