I am fairly new to computer chess, and quite admittedly, I am also fairly new to chess in general.  Please excuse me if my question seems dubious...  I have heard the term "centaur" on more then one occasion, and I would like to know what it means "to play chess in centaur mode".  Please explain.  Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response...

Human computer partnership. Usually played at longer time controls.

I think a centaur is actually a single human with the help of one or more computer engines.
That's called centaur Chess or advanced Chess.

A team of humans with the help of one or more computer engines is called.....? Freestyle player maybe?

You're close, but you're muddling things.

A centaur is just a player who uses a computer to aid his move decisions.  In Freestyle chess, there is still only one centaur representing the team or 'chess entity'--the person who physically makes the moves.  But the centaur can be using multiple computers and have multiple assistants.

A centaur is part human, part horse's ass. Make of this what you will!

It means playing with the assistance of a computer

Or computer playing with the assistance of human.

Since the OP's question has been answered, I have a related question.
Is there any online chess site which allows assisted play, either against a computer account, or against other centaurs?
I am familiar with FICS and ICC, but I don't think that these two allow it.

ICC allows it if you have a computer account, and Playchess has such a function automatically embedded with the account.

AFAIK, ICC's (or FICS, for that matter) computer accounts are for exclusive computer use (not centaur play). It's possible I have this wrong.
I don't know Playchess, except for trying their guest access, which seems very limited.

When I was more active in ICC, I had both a human account (for games with humans) and a computer account, where I played as a centaur.  The only way they can say "exclusive computer use" is if they require that the program itself hook up to the server and transmit moves automatically, which is definitely not the case.

You should state it on your finger notes at FICS.

I use to play on ICC using chess engine assistance. You can play using Ryb  software help for example, but then you get an icon aside of your handle name telling everyone that you are using a chess program. If you try to get around this, you will not, because somehow, someway they have some kind of program that analyzes your moves and then warns you.The first warning is for you to voluntarily check a box that will tell everyone you are using chess engine assistance. If you refuse or tell ICC that they are lose....your account will be suspended and you lose most if not all of what you paid for playing on that site. They then still send you a message telling you that if you change your mind and decide to volunteer checking the computer engine user box, then you will be reinstated.

I'm talking about the computer account, where you're allowed to use software.  When you sign up for an account, you can sign up for either a human account (no assistance allowed) or a computer account (computer assistance allowed).

Real, Scientifically created centaurs....  Have been declared illegal by the US congress.
