Does anyone know to what degree the playing strength of Deep Rybka 3 would be compromised running it on Parallels for the Mac, dual core, 2.53 gzhz ?

what about running it native? according to felix it's possible to run rybka 3 aquarium (at least) natively under OSX with microwine...if/when i get a mac, ill make some videoguide showing how this is possible. i dont see why it wouldnt be.

It runs native under Parallels.

Parallels provides the intercepts for the system calls.  Chess engines run cheerfully native on the Intel Processor.  Your GUI is what is helped, and it isn't all that much that is changed.

Its a fine way to run a chess program at least for single processor engines.

In order to run a multiprocessor engine on the same machine, you will need to run it under Bootcamp, which is not too terribly bad a solution, but it probably isn't that necessary.  For most things where you are running chess on a laptop, running under Parallels is just fine.   If you need more, you are going to wish you had LOTS more.

i disagree. the difference between one & two cores is close to 2x, which is pretty substantial. if i was only using 2 cores of my quad, would i only be satisfied if i could use 8, or 16? no, id just want to be able to use all 4. just because someone wants to take advantage of what they already have doesnt mean they have ridiculous expecations or wants. and since he spent the extra $$ on deep rybka, id sure want to use all cores myself.

i would recommend bootcamp or as i said running under microwine. even if chessbase doesnt run under microwine, it might be worth looking into if you can get the aquarium demo to run. from there as i understand it, it would be a matter of buying basic aquarium without rybka 3 for 20 bucks or so.  thatd be a lot cheaper than buying windows if youd only be using it for chess.
