If R3 users were promised an upgrade to correct bugs, and are still waiting, and if that would make it a good few elo better, and r3 users are expecting that, without being made to buy r4 just to gets what they expected from r3. Then I agree, that they should get it, a good time before r4 is out. However, R4 should already be any momment, if possible, AND the improvement over the corected R3=R3+, should be genuine, and significant.

Therefore I would suggest the following, (If this is indeed the dilema), to Make R4 based on what R3+ was meant to be, Plus, many more improvements, worthy of R4, and to give it free to R3 users. OR, at a significantly reduced price. In this way, no one will have the excuse not to buy Rybka 4.

It has been talked about that R3+ is being planned as a kind of dumbed down R4, to R3 strength and without R3's bugs. That means R3+ will play different than R3 not just in the cases which are affected by the bugfixes.

I had the same idea as you have (= smaller update price for R3 --> R4), but I discarded it because that would cause extra beaurocratic efforts & expenses for the companies. Think of how many different Rybka 3 products exist. To continue this set of products with R4, they would have to offer each in two versions: Update from R3, or fully new. It doesn't seem economic.

Free bugfixes are entirely normal, and fair to the customer. Even if the waiting time for the bugfix is now much longer than appropriate, on the other hand it is usually appreciated by customers if "old" (*) programs receive bugfixes and are not ignored even if the next version is to be released shortly. If computer game developers did this in some cases, I think they earned the status of being extra user friendly.

Maybe it has something to do with the early release of Fritz 12. In the past Chessbase released a new Fritz at the end of November. Maybe they released Fritz 12 earlier to have a good Christmas-business with the Chessbase-Version of Rybka 4. Some people of the scene are saying something about a release-date of January 5th 2010. I asked Felix about this speculation, but he didn't confirm. Other people are saying that the working on the R4-engine is done and they just have to improve some graphical details at the Aquarium-GUI.

All the rumor about the new Rybka reminds me of "Duke Nukem Forever". :-)

When it's done - It's done

I hope they have enough server-capacity to handle all Downloads, when it is available. I have the feeling that we will see the new Rybka in November "Just my own speculation ;-)"

I am waiting to see the Chessbase DVD cover. I liked the one of Rybka 3 very much :)
