This is probably way too elementary for this board but I am confused a bit.  While using Rybka 2.3 to play a game (NOT using GUI), as in human to human, or human to computer, it seems you cannot "Search" your current position with the Rybka Opening Database.  It points to some sort of "Engine Database" only, and I always get "no games found".

I understand how to set up a position in the search window and search position, material, etc but that does not seem "active" while playing my own game.

Am I understanding that correctly?  Do I need some additional database out there somewhere that has a whole bunch of other games other than the Rybka Library set?

I think I should be able to do a current position search when I run Rybka through my Fritz GUI, as yet I do not have the RybkaII.ctg file but I understand that is the way to run the Rybka Library positions through any live game I am playing.

I hope I even got my questions across in an understandable way.  Thanks to anyone who can help.

In the Fritz GUI, as you play a game, you can follow it in the .ctg opening book by selecting the "opening book" tab.

Yes, sir, that I understand...I was just asking if that were possible in the "non-GUI" version, the Rybka 2.3&CCO standalone.

Rybka the engine doesn't have any opening book capability. This is a GUI task.

Vas, you continue to confuse me about issues related to "engine" vs GUI.  Maybe this question of mine is not for you if you only discuss matters of the "engine."  All I know is that I bought a Convekta product, Rybka 2.3 UCI & Chess Openings 2007.  In that program there is an opening book, actually a few books.  So I am asking about the whole package.  That program (and I don't know whether you call it engine, or GUI, or engine with GUI, I really don't know) has the ability to search positions involving the opening database, for games that I view from the database, or new positions that I can set up myself  (not playing a game, just setting up a position).

So what I am asking is, if while playing my own game using that Convekta program, why can't I search the current game I am playing for positions or material in the opening database? It seems that I am only allowed to search in the gallery of my own "engine games".

This has nothing to do with Fritz, or any other product, just what I received in the Convekta box.

Just so you know,

GUI = Graphical User Interface.
Engine = the thing that plays chess.

Chess Openings 2007 seems to be simplified version of Chess Assistant. In CA there is possibility to select bases to search in. I never used CO, but according to its help file there should be such option in CO too.

Aha, I understand.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. You are using Convekta's "GUI". The questions about this can be sent to You can also post here in the hope that somebody will be able to help you - maybe the link by Svilponis has the info you need.
