Required information: user nick name; real name; postal adress*, phone number*, email adress* (*strictly confidential).

The organizer reserves the right to publish the real names of all participants right from the start of the tournament.

Registration per email to: arno@infinitychess.com

For further details about the Freestyle Masters series (esp. rules and Grand Prix points) see: http://infinitychess.com/fm.php

Due to the stage of development of our server software, which is still a beta version with incomplete tournament functions, the pairings will most probably done by using an extern software like 'Swiss Manager'. We try to update all tables as soon as possible.

We kindly ask you to have patience with the organizing TD, especially when you are waiting for any information on the private chat. Please follow and prefer the general chat for general information. Private chat with the TD should be an exception in case you have an individual problem..

The InfinityChess Freestyle Rules (cf. http://infinitychess.com/fm.php) haven't been upgraded so far, as we are still waiting for a complete tournament software. Of course, we are doing our best to guarantee a fair and sportsmanlike competition according to the best traditions of Freestyle chess, as we have already done in the previous test tournaments. By the way, the main cause for server troubles during tournaments has been the use of outdated client versions by some players. The same should and will be avoided with the upcoming event.

All participants have to be present in the tournament room "Freestyle Masters" not later than 18:00 CET for the 1st round (that's one hour before the start) and they have to check out, whether they are logged in with the latest server version, which by now is "version 1.3.2.27469 beta". So, if there should be any server update within the next few days, you would have enough time for a new installation. Once you have been registered by the TD, who will be there even at 17:30 CET, you may leave the tournament room and come back not later than at 18:30 CET (that's half an hour before the start).

At round 2-10 all participants have to be present in the tournament room "Freestyle Masters" not later than 10 minutes before the start of a round.

Last not least, we like to inform you about a change with the server currency "Fini". From now on we count 1 Fini = 1 $Dollar. Existing accounts have been adjusted to the new currency.

If you have any ideas or proposals for our correspondence chess area, where we like to start money prize tournaments too, you may please send me an email. We would like to pick up some of the best ideas the chessfriend.com server had some years before.

InfinityChess wishes you a Happy New Year !

Best Regards

Parent - By Kreuzfahrtschiff (***) Date 2009-01-15 19:16
the server seems to be unstable

how can i play a game over 2 hours without problems and will i get losses because of that?
Parent - By ptobler (**) Date 2009-02-16 08:36
Hi - is there somewhere where we can download the games>?
Parent - - By Kreuzfahrtschiff (***) Date 2009-01-08 16:25
can i use winXP x64?
Parent - - By KingOfMate (**) Date 2009-01-08 17:24
Yes, if you click on download. You will see instructions that mention windows xp 32, and 64 bits, along with vista 32, and 64 bits. Just follow the instructions. My problem is, is that I have windows 98 which it doesnt bother to mention. So I have no idea if it will install, and work for me, or not, and no one seems to know I guess.
Parent - - By Kreuzfahrtschiff (***) Date 2009-01-15 15:23
finally i managed to install with internet explorer instead of firefox

now i have the problem, that i only can use books with .ob  ending, not .ctg

can someone help?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2009-01-15 15:25
AFAIK Infinity Chess doesn't support CTG Books.
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-01-15 15:35
That's correct. CTG is a closed source proprietary chessbase format and for that reason very hard/unable to implement.
Parent - - By Aliven (***) Date 2009-01-16 03:31
Is there some kind of conversion utility?
Parent - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-01-16 12:40
A Aquarium developer mentioned they internally where working on that, but he was not sure it would ever be released to the public. Didn't hear anything about ctg -> ob conversion for infinity chess.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2009-01-16 04:43
Hmmm. Convekta does a pretty good job of reading .ctg books, so its clearly not impossible.
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-01-16 12:39
Yes, in read only mode it's almost 100% functional. But a read only book is not that usefull if you want to keep up to date with the latest theory.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2009-02-16 16:20
What's needed is an open standard for opening books that would be supported by multiple GUIS (maybe arena, aquarium, shredder, etc). Once you have this, people could use aquarium to read in their ctg books and then write them our in the standard format.

The main problem that I see is that people don't want to give up the years of work they have spent on their ctg books...

Regards,
Alan
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-02-16 17:04
Totally agree, the different book formats get pretty annoying (.ob for infinity .ctg for chessbase* .bin for Arena etc).

We really need some uniformity here. A step like unifying engines as done by UCI should be applied for books also. I propose a UBI (Unified book interface) standard!. ;-)
Parent - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-02-16 19:28
Uhh, should of course have read .abk for Arena.

For those that have not received this email:

Dear Freestylers,

please be already there at 18:00 CET for version check; start is 19:00 CET). Also we might see further players who like to join in.

At the start of the tournament we will also publish the real names behind all 'nicks'.

The Technical Manager, Mr. Sajeer, will assistant us as usual. He came just back from his vacation and contacted me. The Freestyle Masters Room will be created in time.

Please be aware that - due to incomplete server software - the pairings are not started by the server, but individually by the players; usually White will send a challenge to the opponent. This is what you have to do, after the TD (myself) starts the round:
1) click on your opponent's name
2) click on "challenge"
3) set the times correctly: 75 minutes + 15 seconds
4) click on "unrated game" and choose "White" (if you are playing White)

The pairings will be shown on the info site (same room, left beside the players list) and may be additionally in the chat.

In case of individual disconnections for any reasons you have to restart the interrupted games by yourself, as the server (and the TD) is not ready yet to restart games. Usually the player, who got not disconnected, will be able to click on the button "resume game" after his opponent is back on the server or back in the room. Please note: the player not disconnected must not close the game window unless told to do so by the TD
Please, if you face any problem with the server during a game, do not log out without the permission of the TD and without informing your opponent, as this would raise the suspicion of a possible 'cheating'.
Normally you should be able to solve a technical problem, in case you had to go offline or you had been disconnected, within 10 minutes. If you don't reconnect within that time, the TD may decide on a loss against you. The same might be the case, if someone is individually disconnected for more than two times and thus causes big problems with the game. Yet, there will be no automatism, the TD will check carefully each situation and try to find fair solutions together with the players.

If both players get disconnected for any reason, it might be impossible to resume the game. In that case they should start a new game and just repeat the moves, while they also would have to simulate the correct times.

If you think, the server causes any wrong decision on a game, just contact the TD, please, as he will immediately check the situation and may be correct a wrong decision. (In some cases players experienced that the server asked them to "resign", when they wanted to close a window of an already finished game. (So, e.g. might the winner be asked to "resign", though is opponent is mated. Such a bug is of course without meaning for the result. The TD accepts and registrates only correct results, no matter what the server will show in the 'games list').

In case, there might be any bigger troubles like a server crash (though not to expect), stay please patiently and wait for new instructions after logging in again.

As this is a Freestyle event, you should be playing in centaur mode (that's the first you activate, when you enter the Freestyle Masters Room, click on "edit" and then "play mode"). As a centaur you are able to load an engine to your tournament game. So far the engine window has a specific size and cannot be moved to another place. If you don't like the arrangement on your screen, you might think of not using an engine here, but do all analysis on another pc, especially as the engine on the server does not allow you to do any interactive analysis (you will know about this from other servers too). Especially you should be careful, not to commit a 'mouse slip', when the board window is smaller than usual. (Also think of the fact, that you are most probably not used to playing on this board. Take your time for executing your moves carefully!)

A special problem after resuming an interrupted game may be the clocks. If the clocks show any serious defects, the TD will decide on how much time each side has left regardless, what the clocks actually show.

I hope, I mentioned all important points. If not, I should add further information at the start of the event.

Good luck and lots of fun to all players and kibitzers!

Best Regards

Parent - - By Trike (**) Date 2009-01-16 18:21
what a buggy gui this is, it says connected but does not display anything. Is the freestyle postponed now? Too bad i won't see rybka 4 cluster playing.
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-01-16 18:25
Indeed. Connection seems to be there but everything is grayed out and unavailable :-(

Luckily everyone is having the same problem. So the TD can make a 'easy' decision. Just skip the first round or play it later this day.
Parent - By Trike (**) Date 2009-01-16 18:29
Wow what a pity to those who prepared a long time and canceled their schedules for today just to play in this tourney.

Parent - - By Maschi (*) Date 2009-01-17 09:10
Install the infinity chess software, start the program and then choose Infinitychess.com to connect to the server.
There you can watch the games in progress and see the result of the finished games.

Parent - - By Kreuzfahrtschiff (***) Date 2009-01-18 10:21

CIRON is unfair!!!

as chessbase last year, i hate that!!!!!
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2009-01-19 08:30
There are certainly some issues to be worked out with the server software, but Arno is being as fair and reasonable as humanly possible.

It is a well known problem with the current GUI, that to exit a running a game, a player may have to resign. I ended up resigning in both of my won games to close the windows after the game was over. In both cases, the TD made sure the correct game result was recorded. This was as simple as sending the TD the game score.

On the other hand, if you want to play to the court of public opinion, you can post your game here and let people make their own decisions on why your opponent resigned:
Maybe you had a won game?, or
Maybe he was in serious time trouble?

If neither of these explanations fits, the resignation was most likely because of server problems. The TD made every effort to settle the games over the board, independent of the server issues. He should be commended for this.

Regards,
Alan

can someone send me the folder with the installed program? I'm using Ubuntu GNU/Linux and can't use that installation links.
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2009-01-21 06:20
Huh, I was getting notified that everyone was ignoring me on the server so I asked for help in the chat, someone told me that I was running an older version and that I had to update, I followed the instructions from the website.

However, when I click on Install (from Internet Exploder) a big file downloads, but then, instead of "getting started an automated installation procedure which will guide [me] through the installation procedure and gets InfinityChess installed onto [my systems]", the application seems to run itself (I can connect to infinitychess.com from it.)

That was unexpected, am I supposed to run the GUI from the Install link? I was hopping to select an install location and get an icon on the desktop to access the GUI, like in the previous time....
Parent - - By Vempele (Silver) Date 2009-01-21 07:07
Download the installer to disk and run it from there.

Did you uninstall the older version first?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2009-01-21 07:24
I already installed the prerequisites, the file that comes from the Install link is called IChess.application, there's no installer.

> Did you uninstall the older version first?

Yes, I also un-installed the Visual C++ libraries and installed the latest ones as instructed.
Parent - - By Vempele (Silver) Date 2009-01-21 08:12

> the file that comes from the Install link is called IChess.application, there's no installer.

No, that's the installer.

I don't know why it would make a difference, but that's how I installed it.
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2009-01-21 19:08
Ok, I didn't know the .application extension was an executable. After downloading it and running it said "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance." Perhaps because I'm running it from the wrong place.

From IE, clicking that link makes this appear:

That doesn't look like an installer, it looks more like the program itself (it works when I click these buttons) but I don't know from where it's being run (and I'd not like to have to open IE every time I want to use it.)

What's fun is that I suspect I didn't do anything wrong, but that their updating process doesn't work, if they changed it recently.
Parent - - By Kreuzfahrtschiff (***) Date 2009-01-24 14:56
crash again now?
Parent - - By Fulcrum2000 (****) Date 2009-01-24 15:39
Seems like it, can't get in now (luckily my game was already finished before I disconnected from the server).
