{in the first round, I am playing vs Alberto. We played a sharp variation of
e6 Najdorf, but in reality a draw was fine with us, also because we have
prepared the book together for this final, and it would have made no sense to
fight each others as if we were worst enemies... we just followed what was in
the same book we both had, and as a result the variation led to draw. Anyway
the game is interesting} 1. e4 {[%emt 0:01:23]} c5 {[%emt 0:00:13]} 2. Nf3 {

in the first round, I am playing vs Alberto. We played a sharp variation of
e6 Najdorf, but in reality a draw was fine with us, also because we have
prepared the book together for this final, and it would have made no sense to
fight each others as if we were worst enemies...

This is an interesting statement. Of course freestyle is a team sport, but is it also a multi-team sport?

If you mean it was a pre-agreement result, then i agree and this is very bad and unsportsmanlike behavior to the other participants.
If they just reached to a point/position where it was equal but dynamic and they didn't want to risk by fighting then this is tolerable. But if this was for the extra reason they know each other, then again we have a very bad situation.

I think its a good thing they met in the first round and not in the last round.

Alan

Don't forget the at least equally important continuation of that statement: we just followed what was in
the same book we both had, and as a result the variation led to draw
.  This is quite normal and understandable.

Well done Eros, congratulations for your victory.

Can you please give us some details as what specific kind of hardware/engines did you use?

Thanks for the games.

Regards,
Gaмßito.

Hi Gambito, for the details please look at the report I wrote in another post

Thanks for the games Eros, in Moro Gamgee-Ultima you mention that Jeroen might do better with 27. Reb1! Qb4 ... it does look like Qb4 loses and that 27. ... Rc8 is the move that black can hold with, although I didn't take a long look.   Anyway, this game is a good lesson to play novelties (Jeroen's 24. Bf1!!) at a slow pace!
Parent - - By Auryn (***) [it] Date 2008-05-05 09:20
My analysis might not be very accurate, as I did it pretty fast too, in reality you can be right, maybe black can defend, anyway I remain of the opinion that white is to be preferred, in the long run, the white minor pieces should be superior to the black queen. Maybe 27.Reb1 is not the best move. After 27.Reb1 Rc8 white might continue with 28.Nc3!? Rcxc4 29.Bxd4 Rxd4 30.Ra5 Bc7 31.Bg2!?
It would be interesting to hear from Noomen if he has found a way for white to get an advantage after 26...b3!
Parent - By Venator (Silver) [nl] Date 2008-05-05 16:38
I agree with Eros' statement that Nb8 is probably '?!' and white is to be preferred. Engines simply overestimate the material aspect of the position, while in fact the white pieces have perfect coordination. In any case white doesn't risk anything and black has to be very careful about his defence. In particular the white bishop at f1/g2 is a monster, IMO it is stronger than a rook. No opposition on the white squares :-). I am sure it is a matter of time when Nb8 will finally be refuted.

Note that I prepared the line on the day itself, so I had no time to check everything. I therefore concentrated on the moves engines like best. Unfortunately none of them came up with b3!?, which probably is the best defence. 27.Reb1 Rc8 might hold, I am not sure. Probably I will do some additional analysis in the coming days and put these in the new Rybka book. New Rybka liked white after 26... b3 (score went up to around +0,40) so I didn't want to overrule her this time (I did this a few times with mixed results).

So basically the Re1 & Bf1! idea was an inspiration shortly before the game, as I was somehow sure this line would appear on the board.
