Rybka solves this more slowly than do Fritz and some of the other programs:

8/6B1/p5p1/Pp4kp/1P5r/5P1Q/4q1PK/8 w - - 0 1

Solution: 1. Qxh4+ Kxh4 2. Bf6+ g5 3. Bc3!!, etc.

The current Rybka version solves this in 5 seconds:

New game - Rybka 2.3.2i22 origmp

I'm pleased to hear this. Vas must be right about the tactical improvements . . .

The main point here is not tactic but zugzwang.

In terms of depth, my rybka 2.3.2a finds this line at depth 20: not bad, if, according to my test , another renowned engine (that I like a lot, anyway), at this depth, is still wandering around Bf6+, draw.

As for this quick check, the fastest in catching this tactics is Shredder 11, that needs 9 plys.

Indeed, on my E6600 @3GHz, 2 cores used:

I suppose it also helps to be running "8 cores 2x QX9775 @ 4 GHz" . . .
Parent - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2008-04-28 22:25
I ran that on my surf computer (2x Xeon E5462).
The Skulltrail probably would have found it a bit faster.

Is that EVERYBODY? ;)

Parent - - By Roland Rösler (****) [de] Date 2008-04-29 07:09
Okay, let us count the version:

0. Vas and Iweta (one person :-)). They don´t count, because they don´t get her. They create her.
1. Larry. He counts. He creates her, but he has to wait for the version.
2. Jeroen.
3. Lukas.
4. NN. Wide field for speculations. I tip on Nick.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2008-04-29 07:23
Larry is probably not being counted because he is a developer and I would be very surprised if Dagh didn't have a copy (if he still exists).

Alan

OK, I do not read every single post in this forum. It seems that everybody knows something about Dagh Nielsen, something I have miss. I liked a lot his posts, and -as far as I understand- he is involved with rybka development (book for rybka3 with J.N.?), and... has he disappeared??

I asked this because, well... curiosity has its own reason for existing (A.Einstein)

Thanks

Rumors say that he found a big hole in chess that allowed him to destroy the opposition, and lost interest. He'll be back once this hole is fixed.

PS - Of course, it's the first time that this rumor is posted ;)

Ok, just for fun - I counted the way Roland does. Iweta and I don't count, Larry does.

it's just a zugzwang problem of the chess engines, it depends on how you use "Null move forward pruning" in the engine. I am develeping new engine, it has no name at the moment :). it solves this problem less than a second in the depth 14, 202K nodes. still working on it, in this year I hope to release it. Regards...

I look forward to your program. I use engines for analysis, especially endgame analysis, and your efforts will go to good use.

It's interesting that the very tactical Winfinder engine cannot find 1. Qxh4, even at 23 plies, but of course that is a problem mainly related to the zugzwang detection where all the older versions are simply failing.
