About a recent CCC game.

-- CCC: Lc0 J92-330, using 4 RTX 2080TI's (~$5,600 Amazon.com) misses a Mate in 11 (in a winning position but what if it was not otherwise winning?).

-- Here: Spike 1.2 (from 2007, 13 years ago, uses 1-thread max., here R7 2700X) finds it in under 1/2 second - 798 nodes @ 1,895kns.

Other simpler 'real world' type mates that only Lc0 has a lot of difficulty with, and all CPU engines (even if old, 1-thread, no-NNUE etc.) find very easy:    (Main continuations from the chess.com posts.)

Lc0, latest J98.3-8 net, could not find it in 20 minutes, Stockfish 10 and the very old Spike 1.2 very quickly improved on the posted solution(s).

LC0 finds early mates.  Often better than the superstars.
LC0 stinks in the endgame (and I really mean it).
The clever moves in the opening and early middle game are how LC0 wins.

"early mates" - only vs. very weak opposition.

"better than the superstarts" I would be totally shocked if you can post even one example!

Even if you can find one I already have posted 4 simple 'real world'/not-compositions mates that Lc0 does drastically worse then even obsolete 1-thread-only engines!

I wrote earlier that its a subject that might be underestimated. I am attempting to counter that.

I was just looking at this, Stockfish-latest 1-0 Lc0_66511 (net recent but not latest), Lc0 lost not 'in the endgame' but being almost simple-mate-blind, as in my post here, it wandered into mate threats from white's R's on the g & h files and quickly lost an even game - mate-blindness not just 'in the endgame'!!
(Its ending play before move 110. can't be that bad since it should have drawn vs. the Dec. 14 Sf.)

Yes, definitely! An important point: as in the first example above from CCC, it was winning even without the Qxh6 mate theme it missed.

These are from TCEC, so the opposition is always a good engine on top hardware.  All of these are positions where LC0 has an advantage of at least two queens early in the game.

Your filter "at least two queens" proves how weak the opposition was - and required weak opposition to match.
Though no doubt you meant Lc0 20.00, often Stockfish 10.00 or less.

99% of them are not what anyone would call early.

By "related" 5 or more from the same game, mostly pointless duplication.

A flood from Lc0 wins - the same could be done for Stockfish - the top 2 a TCEC win a lot, so what.
As I said early mates vs. weak oposition and not better than 'the superstars'.

At 1 minute Stockfish 10 analyzed the first few FEN's better than Lc0v0.26.3_J98.3-8: often finding a mate very quickly when Lc0 did so slowly - if it found it at all.

The above file contains 3395 positions from TCEC where there are at least 20 chessmen left on the board, and LC0 has gone up by at least a full piece and will go on to win the game.
Many of the positions are related.

As i seen it's not related only to Leela, but to all NN pure based engines.
Leela is better compared with other NN engines, because trained with tables bases.
Still also misses mates where total pieces count is out of table bases limit.

More interesting is why NN engines at all miss the mates in self-play and in tournaments? Even simple ones ...

I suspect because of averaging all own and opponent moves, instead of choose concrete playing line
(best move by me 1, reasonable moves by opponent 1, best move by me 2 etc.).
