As per the title, are there problems with doing this? I am an inexperienced user but it seems like once it evaluates the next layer after backsolving it should be fine?
I am using Aquarium 2020 and the move trees are stored in an .epd file.

I don't believe I've experienced any noticeable issues upgrading to Stockfish 11 and saving results to the same trees as before with Stockfish 10.

To clarify - I think it is fine doing this going from version X to version Y of the same engine.  I would not do this going to entirely different engine as different engines may have very different evaluation scales.  But stockfish to stockfish is fine.  If you wanted to switch to an entirely new engine or had reason to believe the evaluations are very different, then I would copy the positions from your tree to a new tree, add them all as new tasks and re-evaluate the tree.

There should not be any real problems.  However, backsolving or minimaxing (however you want to call it) will not solve all issues.  When going to new engines, alternative generation can be messed up, because the new engine may have different ideas for any given position.  So making sure that all positions (relevant) get updated with new alternatives can be quite time consuming, if not nearly impossible.  In some of my larger trees, I am still uncovering (years later) some positions need to have alternatives manually added... after engine upgrades or changes.

Could this be done by increasing the width of the tree?

Yes, that would help.  There are numerous things that you can do, but this is one of the best and easiest.  I would widen to at least +/- 5.00, if not already... at least for a few cycles thru the alternate cycle.

I'm sure it will be fine.

Whatever parts of the tree you are interested in and pay attention to will get updated by the new engine when you work on it.
