Ever since I installed Aquarium 2020 (Windows 10, Ryzen 7 AMD, 16 GB Ram, 2 monitors), I have experienced frequent episodes of the program hanging for seemingly no reason at all (IDeA not running, no engine analyzing, no other program running simultaneously). I am just loading a game from a database. When I terminate the program and run it again. Sometimes, it hangs, other times it loads the same game without hanging. Its inconsistent behaviour is difficult to understand. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on?

It's a wild guess - but if, when it is hanging, it recovers after a few seconds, then check the power settings of your hard drives. Particularly if you have spinning disks as opposed to SSDs, it could be that they get switched off after a certain period of inactivity, and when they are needed again, take a few seconds to spin up and become responsive. This can cause software accessing these disks to appear hanging.

The Aquarium is on an SSD drive. Also the hanging is not temporary. I need to stop the program with the Task Manager.

My Aquarium is also running from SSD and it sometimes hangs as well.  Usually after about 5 minutes it will come back to life.  At first I thought there was something wrong with my SSD, but now think that there is some interlock in the program that I have triggered that finally times out.  In any event, I am pretty good about backing up my AQ stuff, because this behavior worries me.

I had hanging/crashing behavior when trying to use aquarium with the data directory set up as a shared cloud drive folder (like dropbox or sync).  Because aquarium reads/writes to files very frequently it resulted in many errors when operating in a cloud environment (even though the files were locally saved).  Running it without the folders shared with the cloud service eliminated the issue.

Not sure if this is related - but I just wanted to confirm you were not saving to a folder that is being shared in a cloud service like dropbox, sync, or onedrive.

I had problems that included freezing when my remote engines were communicating over Wifi, and the stability improved significantly by switching to CAT6 LAN cables.

That being said, most of the problems I have had with Aquarium freezing were ultimately traced back to overallocation of memory.
Like for example allocating the full available memory to IDEA engines and then running infinite analysis.
Engines don't always respect the memory settings you put in Aquarium, so you need to check it.

In my case, the drive was a local SSD.  At one time I was using AQ across the local wifi network, but had a lot of problems with that.... so quite awhile ago I began running the complete project on my server to avoid communications problems.  So far the stuff running on my server (dual xeon with SSD for AQ) runs smoothly, no hangups or freezes there.  They only happen on my personal PC... where all is stored locally on my SSD.  The odd thing I have noticed, if after it has been hung up for a few minutes, I hit the Start-Stop button, that can wake it up!!  It pops up and asks me the normal dialog for shutting down IDeA.  Weird stuff.

Seems to happen most often when I use the Sandbox prior to "Start" of the project -- trying to "seed" some positions into the project before I begin IDeA analysis.  It hardly ever hangs at all if I run IDeA awhile before pausing and loading into Sandbox.  That's why I think it is some sort of program interlock.

Thanks for your replies.
No, I am not using cloud services or any network. I am not running any engine analysis or IDeA. The freezing occurs when I am just navigating through the various menu items or loading any game from any database. There are no other programs running aside from Aquarium. I wonder if my new high resolution monitor has anything to do with this? But I have new drivers installed.

Both AQ and CA routinely freeze when a database has become corrupted or contains an illegal move. Try closing all the databases and then reopening them one at a time.

I crash when trying to open the latest Hugebase - not sure why.  My guess is the hugebase download was corrupted in some way.  Since I don't use Aquarium as my database I have not spent much time troubleshooting.  I am able to open other data bases OK in aquarium.
