Thanks, very interesting matches. And lots of exciting games, in many of them you'll see complete chaos, as a human you have great difficulties to understand what's going on.

I know that some people claim that longer opening lines favour Stockfish, so I decided to take a look at these 3 matches and see if they are right. Below are shown the length of the book lines in all the wins:

TCEC 10 sufi
Stockfish wins: 12,12,5,3,8,6,8,14,10,8,8
Leela wins: 12,13,12,3,10,10,8,6,5,5,7,7,9,14,5,8,3,4,3,11,7,6,9,11,8,15

TCEC 12 sufi
Stockfish wins: 8,8,4,10,6,6,8,5,9,13,5,4,10,5,11,8,6,9,7
Leela wins: 11,4,6,5,11,1,9,13,7,5,8,4,8,14,7,9,13

TCEC 15 sufi
Stockfish wins: 4,11,6,5,3,5,8,12,3,10,10,7
Leela wins: 7,2,9,7,7,2,2,9,8,4,4,9,8,3,11,5,5,7,6,7,3,10,2,10

One can clearly see that Stockfish also scores wins in shorter opening lines and that Leela also scores wins in longer opening lines.

Yes, many very complicated games, I was impressed.

> some people claim that longer opening lines favour Stockfish,

No problem with your longer openings! I have not played enough but long, main GM lines might solve too much positionally for Stockfish.

The rumor Stockfish wins the short games and Lc0 the long, is I assume is mostly true.
3+1:
(T15) Sf 6 wins 47 - 53 moves, shortest Ls win 54 moves. {All 14 games <47 moves were draws.}
- - longest 10 wins, 74+ moves, Ls won 10.
(T12) Sf 8 wins 28 - 43 moves, shortest Ls win 43 moves. {ordinary draws/length}
- - longest 10 wins, 73+ moves, Ls won 9.
(T10) Sf 6 wins 39 - 48 moves, shortest Ls win 53 moves. {ordinary draws/length}
- - longest 10 wins, 83+ moves, Ls won 10.

The shortest wins is only part of the story: my resign score (9.00) is way too high for Leelenstein which plays until pieces down and '-Mate in' before it gets to -9.00.
Shortest Sf win, (T12), Sf is +6.22 move 16(!), +10.05 move 18 when Ls says -2.26(??). Ls won as white also, but it was 62 moves. (Original TCEC Sf +1 white, Ko. draw with white.)

By the way, S12 is a way more risky openingset than S10 and S15. So it is quite remarkable it produced the same number of wins as S10 and S15.
But perhaps S12 is only 'more risky' in the AB vs AB world. And not in the AB vs NN world :-).

Do you plan to play the S9, S11, S13 and S14 openingsets as well?
Parent - By MrKris (***) Date 2019-12-26 14:47
All 3 of mine where stuck at 63/64% draws somehow.
My 3+1 (S15) had the exact same W/L as TCEC's Sf vs Lc0, different net.

> But perhaps S12 is only 'more risky' in the AB vs AB world. And not in the AB vs NN world :-).

It was plenty risky for Leelenstein, is first loss to Sf in my 3+1's. It lost 19 but only 20 in the other 2 combined.
(My hardware, L.R. ~1.6, favors NN's if anything.)

> Do you plan to play the S9, S11, S13 and S14 openingsets as well?

Yes, the rest with S16. (All the same settings, though as above my resign score was 'weird' with Ls. With he Xmas Stockfish though.)

As it takes me ~12 hours each I did the ones I was most curious about first.

Thanks a lot for these matches! Quite shocking for me to see that S16 has the lowest draw rate. I had never expected that.

You are welcome, it is interesting!

Maybe a very slight Sf better at TCEC - better here correlation, but probably none on the draw rates.

I am looking forward to your new project with my Noomen_LowDrawRate_v1 testset. Of course I am curious if it can lower the draw rate vs the TCEC superfinal tests.

The Frankenstein-Dracula gambit produced another crazy game. Look at the eval differences and the weird pawn structures. I really love such stuff :smile:

White won both, but I liked both.

Ls 1-0 Sf: Ls invents a roughly Allgaier-style knight for pawn sacrifice 5.h5 allowing 7...fx(N)g5.

Strange choice for a positional engine, but it needs to be that to understand white's compensation it seems.

Sf's evaluations decline, although black has a knight vs. 2 pawns, after 24.Rae1 {+1.88} c6 {-1.81} its +/.

Sf 1-0 Ls: Sf's 5.Bc4 got it to +2.07 after 9.exd6 already.

6.Ng5! is the refutation of this King's gambit line. It was also played by Stockfish and Komodo in the superfinal. Stockfish already had a +2 eval right after the book exit.

Interestingly enough no one had ever played that move, not even in correspondence chess games.

3...h5 is not a good move. Probably loses.
But that Ng5 is a common move in h4 line of Kings gambit.

> 3...h5 is not a good move. Probably loses.

Stockfish here had a Muzio-type idea also: 5.Bc4 {?!, 5.h4 (!) g4 6.Ng5! Venator above} g4 {4th best, -1.04 +/, PV=8, but just 10 mins.} 6.O-O gxf6 7.Qxf3 Nc6 8.Qxf4 etc.
Maybe 3...h5 is a complete waste of tempo.

> But that Ng5 is a common move in h4 line of Kings gambit.

Interesting.

3...h5 is a blunder for black. 3... g5 is a must.
Again 5.h4 is bad. 5. Bc4 is good.

>{?!, 5.h4 (!) g4 6.Ng5! Venator above}

Ng5 is a common move in those lines. I don't remember how many times i have played it. Sometimes knight is sac'ed there or on f7.

> 6.Ng5! is the refutation of this King's gambit line. It was also played by Stockfish and Komodo in the superfinal. Stockfish already had a +2 eval right after the book exit.
>
> Interestingly enough no one had ever played that move, not even in correspondence chess games

Yes, it looks very good, Stockfish is rarely wrong about +2, even more so at TCEC.

Strange that it is an N, too low rated playing 3...h5, therefore the competition,  and too seldom played perhaps.

-I had hopes of finding something for black after 6.Ng5!, but it looks too strong. I would say zugswang although black can attempt to survive for quite a few moves it seems.
-I had hopes for 5.Bc4, but it seems that black can do much better than Leelenstein in my original 3+1 game.

Thank you! These worked out quite well, low draws and very interesting games!
I increased my TC slightly from 3+1, still lower draws than with your TCEC SuFi's, which were lower than your 4+!

Thanks a lot, very interesting!

A few suggestions for further testing:

I am playing through the games and it is kind of amusing to see Leelenstein not able to win positions in which it thinks it has a +2 through +4 advantage.
Perhaps these evals are in huge error?

Here is an example: +4.36 at move 27 and then it slowly but surely deteriorates.

Example from my post. I think (not 100% sure) that it is very rare for Stockfish not to 'go deep enough', here that white can both continuously check and mate.

Your examples, thanks for finding: probably huge errors but it is very common for Lc0/Leelenstein * , usually under 4.00 though.
It seems to me to plausible to me (but do not know) that they can somewhat often, and sometimes greatly, overvalue features that normally would be part of a won game but does not see that there is no cumnination:

Ls==Sf: 27. Bb4 4.36/8 7.6s 27... Kb7 -1.12/32 5.5s -maybe good white bishop-bad black knight, white rooks better than blacks, white passed pawn and space-

Ls==Sf: 29. Rxa7 8.06/12 11 29... Nb5 -0.84/39 2.7s -white rook on 7th and light bishop dangerous (8 pts.?!) for the black king-

* My Cute Chess GUI (and of course Arena) games I post have evaluation graphs in Arena:
open pgn in Arena (filter/order as needed, here draws only)
1 click per game scan:
- load the game at the top of the list, the eval. graph shows
- click the "+ pgn" button near the top
- the next game loads with its eval. graph (click on the graph to go to any move)
- repeat

You can quickly see the peaks and lows, also when Stockfish says "0.00" for the rest of the game (when there is only 1 sides evaluation ~= 0. as below about move 40.)
