Well, I made my first baby steps toward changing to Linux.  I am running Ubuntu MATE with VirtualBox running Windows 10.  Just initial testing, booting from a USB stick.  So far so good.  It looks like I need more memory though... the virtual Windows uses a LOT of ram.  But with ram prices coming down, that should be in the cards very soon.

If all goes well, my next effort will be the conversion of my server to Linux also.  But that is a ways down the road, as I have just got it running to my satisfaction under Windows 10.

Almost forgot, Aquarium 2017 runs well under VirtualBox.  The only problem that I have had so far is that I had to manually load MSVCR100.DLL.  Not a huge problem, but annoying anyhow.  It would be nice if the Aquarium installer took care of it, but oh well.
