I guess I'm looking for some motivation. How do you guys stay passionate about Centaur Chess?

I haven't come close to losing a game since I started ICCF a year ago. I've won plenty and am moving up in rating at a fairly good pace. Not bragging, just stating what is now historically a fact. But I'm not SO motivated by rating increase... it's always been about the chess for me. But, if I'm being honest, I'm finding it more of a chore to mount up and work on my games. Maybe not a chore as much as I think I'm just getting bored.

Any of you guys ever felt that way and what did you do about it to motivate yourself?

Looking for motivation...

Well, I find other things to do... like watch YouTube videos.  Or put together computers to play with...

Lately I've been deliberately playing inferior lines against equal rated (or higher rated) opponents.  To keep my interest in the game.

Like allowing the Marcozy Bind(not sure of spelling) in the Najdorf Sicilian, when you don't usually have to do that.  The computer says it is bad for Black, but I have a decent struggle trying to prove otherwise.

And, of course, it makes it interesting for your opponent too.. he's probably thinking, "What the heck has pawnslinger prepared??"  You'd be surprised how many computers don't really know how to play so-called inferior lines.  Drives computers and opponents nuts.

Now, you have to figure out how to avoid downright losing lines.  The idea is to make things interesting, not absolutely deadly.

Playing inferior lines in corr Chess is about the same as Paul Morphy giving Rook odds!!!  Even Paul got bored!  But if you look back at his games, I think he won most of those Rook odds games!!!

I feel like that all the time, and tried pretty much the same thing you did, with no promising results either.

Good chess has a bleak future, if any at all.

I spend a lot of time studying chess at
An interactive site with a lot of courses and books. Trying to be improve my chess so I can better guide the chess engines. One of the books I am studying now is Game Changer, the book about AlphaZero.

Hi Chief:

Congrats!!  I just noticed that you made the top 10 rating gainers list on the ICCF-US website with a +?? for the last period.

Very nice!

PS: The rating gain(??) was self-censored to avoid giving away your id too easily.

Hey 'Slinger...
Thank you very much. Still plugging away over here.. We'll see where this'll take us.

Hi Chief:

I am looking forward to meeting you in a game.  I usually play in the Veteran's Cups, which you are too young for... but maybe we will meet in the US Invitational... I am sure you will soon earn an invite to it.  Or maybe the "Bring in the New Year" tournament... which I am sure you will soon earn an invitation to also.

As your rating goes up, the invitations will start to come in... especially once you break into the US Top 50 list.

I will be looking forward to it.. Sounds like a lot of fun. I just got my first 'invite' from Tom. Its just the 10th Interzonal Team Event so probably no big deal but... I was invited nonetheless.

Tom is a great resource!!  I must seem like a pest to him <grin>.... I am always with a lot of questions for him.  He always takes them seriously and finds the right answers.  If you face Tom or Kyle (his son, I think) over the board, they are both very sharp competitors.
