I'm sorry, but I do not understand  your question. Can you be more specific? Screenshots?

He wants to prune the tree, so that only the 1st 8 ply are left within it.  I understand, but I do not knew how to do it.  I always start a brand new tree in these types of situations.

Perhaps he wants to create some sort of opening tree.  Or the tree has become too strange after the 8th move.  I don't know the why, but I have been in similar situations.

Perhaps using the tree utils can solve the problem. Take tree A and use "Save from Position", from move 9, to create tree B. Then "Subtract Tree" B from A and tree A should be left with positions only up to move 8. Worth a try?

If the intention is as pawnslinger describes above I am not sure how to do it.

I think however it could be worth experimenting with the Tree Utility "Filter EPD".

First “Export to EPD” and then “Filter EPD” with the option “Leave only positions presented in book”. All Tree Utilities are very well described in the help file under the headline “Tree Utilities”.

Filter EPD
Purpose: Filter an EPD file based on positions in a tree.
Usage: The EPD file to be filtered is 'operation.SourceEPD' and the filtering tree is specified in 'input'. The filtered EPD file will be written to 'operation.DestinationEPD'.  'operation.Positionscontrol' is a drop-down list which gives you two filtering options. Setting it to 'Leave only positions presented in book' filters out positions that are not present in the tree. Setting it to 'Exclude the positions presented in book' filters out positions that are in the tree.

Another way (perhaps better) is to use

Save from position
Purpose: To create a subtree, starting from a given position in an existing tree.
Usage: 'Input' is the input tree, 'output' is the resulting tree. Paste an EPD string into 'operation.Position'. The subtree of 'input' starting from the position will be written to the 'output'.
Creating a subtree starting from a given position

and then

Subtract Trees
Purpose: Create a new tree consisting of all positions in tree A that are not present in tree B.
Usage: If 'input' is tree A and 'operation.Subtracted' is tree B, then the tree specified in 'output' will contain A-B, i.e. all positions in A that are not in B.
Creating a tree containing the difference between two trees

See Tree Utilities in the help file.

You might need to do it several times to get your target tree.

In Idea/Master tree/Crop you may crop the tree from either first root, current root or all roots. I only use “first root” myself. Be aware that all result from current root up to the root of the entire tree disappear and you cannot get it back. Consequently you should use a Master tree and a Project tree and first Export the Project tree to the Master tree and then you may crop the Project tree. After that you may continue your analyses and export to the Master tree whenever you think it is appropriate.
I would advice you to make some tests in some temporary trees before you do it in your real trees. Aquarium isn't too keen to warn when you do something in the wrong way.

Sometimes the crop doesn't take place on the expected place but a bit higher up in the tree. This is due to that Aquarium doens't really work with a propper tree structure and the crop position is probably within a loop.
