Since this is THE Aquarium forum, it would be nice if someone would post official release notes, detailing the upgrade.

But given past experience, I kind of doubt it will happen.

Until then, I am officially "from Missouri", whose state motto is "Show Me".

Dang it, 'Slinger, I guess I'm from Missouri too.

Parent - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2018-12-13 17:26
I am really from Missouri.  St. Louis to be specific.  Here is an interesting factoid.

There is no official state nickname. ... One is popularly ascribed to a speech by Congressman Willard Vandiver in 1899, who declared that "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton, cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri, and you have got to show me."

I fit that quote pretty well.  Lots of those cockleburs are still sticking to me... I hate 'em.  But that's Missouri for you.

Does anyone know where I can see the date of my activation of Lomonosov tablebases (Aquarium 2018), so that I can make accordingly the extension of the subscription?
Parent - - By Radost (***) Date 2018-12-12 20:28
Thanks for the link. So we can read what is new: updated database and so on. But no code change, no bugfix, no new features as usual.
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2018-12-12 21:22 Edited 2018-12-12 21:26
I followed the link... I did not see release notes.  I saw product description (not much changed, it looked like cut-n-paste from what I have seen before).

In other words, not much reason to upgrade.  Especially since I use Chessbase for database functions... not Aquarium.  I use Aquarium strictly for IDeA analysis.

Maybe I am the exception.  But if others are using Aquarium like I do, then it seems like the developers would benefit from some market research.

I guess I could be wrong, I do not know how many people are willing to pay for an upgrade not knowing what (if anything) they are paying for.
Parent - By Radost (***) Date 2018-12-13 06:34
I also use chessbase (I am german and a betatester of chessbase) for all except IDeA analysis. :-)

I am satisfied with Aquarium 2018 - there is no need to "upgrade" to the same program version.
Parent - By chesspjn (**) Date 2018-12-12 21:39
LOL when you click on the link to manual you get the Aquarium2016 manual, so I guess it is not much that have happened.

Is there a discounted price for upgrading from Aquarium 2018?  I can't find an upgrade price anywhere.
Parent - - By chesspjn (**) Date 2018-12-13 17:08
Neither have I
Parent - - By Ghengis-Kann (***) Date 2018-12-13 18:06
There is never an upgrade discount for Aquarium.

I will probably buy it for the database update because I haven't yet been able to justify the cost of Chessbase.
My opening theory must all be contained in my head, which means it is so awful that the difference between Chessbase and Hugebase is completely irrelevant.
Even more so now that I am using a custom "Crazy K" version of Komodo 12 that has the dynamism cranked up to the point where it is willing to sacrifice pawns for questionable compensation.

The new version will also let me start over with organizing the bewildering patchwork of projects into something more coherent.

I think there was some upgrade discount for some versions a few years ago
Parent - By Maxiator (***) Date 2018-12-16 12:53
It seems only to be an update of using Lomonosov tablebases.... (and hugebase)

Aquarium goes like ChessAssistant, allways the good old ideas and hopes, but no improvement over the actual level.

So has anybody upgraded to 2019 yet?  Any undocumented features, improvements or fixes?  ....or new bugs?
Parent - - By chesspjn (**) Date 2018-12-19 18:39 Edited 2018-12-19 23:26
I have used it a few hours now.
It is version 12 build 101
Haven't found any new features or bugs.
But they looks like have found a solution on a bug, on previous Aquarium now and then one of the cores freezes, and then vanish, making that queu dead, and I have had to minimax by hand then stop and restart the project. Annoying when I have been to work coming home finding these. In Aquarium2019 looks like another core now takes over that queu and then after minimax restart all the cores again. Anyway it does so on my old 4 cores laptop. Testing now if the same goes for my 16 cores computer.
Huge base is updated but the corr database is not.

I have also been testing Stockfish 10, when the project is new you get a rollercoaster effect because of the contempt but after sometime it is less and less noticeable.

Update several hours later. It looks very stabile both on my old laptop and my newer 16 cores computer. No incidents with freezing queus.

Thanks for the info. Aquarium 2018 has build 100, so there is no further development ...
Parent - - By mattchess (**) Date 2018-12-19 22:31
I am still using AQ 2017 and it works well for me - that is V9.5.0 build 950

I am considering upgrading to 2019 since I am a couple generations behind at this point - although since things seems to be pretty stable for me I am on the fence.  Any notable fixes in 2018/2019?
Parent - - By Radost (***) Date 2018-12-20 08:31
AQ 2018 is more stable then AQ 2017. I donĀ“t know what was fixed, but beetween build 950 and 100 there are 50 code changes.

Thanks - went ahead and got the latest version. Also worth it for the renewed access to the 7 man tablebase.

Now I just need to recall how to move all my projects, trees, and engine configurations
Parent - - By mattchess (**) Date 2018-12-20 17:02
Easy enough - copied the various folders into the data directory and I appear to be back up and running in 2019 where I left off
Parent - - By Ghengis-Kann (***) Date 2018-12-20 17:38
There is an even easier way for those who plan to upgrade.
A small text file that I think is called aquarium.dir which points to where the data is.
You can install AQ2019 anywhere and point this file to the previous installation.

Great tip, thank you!

One thing I have noticed is that the database functions work MUCH better now.  I too use chessbase as my primary database but this is quite handy to be able to use my databases from within aquarium as well.  Seems to be handling chessbase formatted files much better now.  It is actually quite fast.  I've been able to do operations on my ICCF database, mega database, various power bases etc.
Parent - By Ghengis-Kann (***) Date 2018-12-21 18:09
That is good to hear, because I use Aquarium as my database program, and will be buying AQ2019 pretty much exclusively for the database update.
A little disappointed that the correspondence base has not been updated.
Parent - - By ChiefPushesWood (**) Date 2018-12-21 20:52

>when the project is new you get a rollercoaster effect because of the contempt

If you're using Aquarium for analysis, turn contempt off. It's completely pointless for analysis (that is, if you're playing against opponents who are also using engines) as you're searching for the truth. Truth = contempt 0.

Parent - By chesspjn (**) Date 2018-12-21 23:09
I only use IDeA in Aquarium. Longer time the effect is cancelled out, but you get less drawish repeated position. So I let the contempt stay.
Parent - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2018-12-22 02:47
I agree, and I set contempt to 0... except sometimes in IA, I leave a non-0 contempt value -- because sometimes I am convinced that my opponent, even if using an engine, is weaker than my analysis.  Like when I play an 1800 - 2000 elo player.  But IDeA always gets contempt 0, because you have evaluate both sides for the best move to get minimax to work.  Minimax only works, if the best move is found for both sides.

I have different POV though.

Has anybody an idea what happened with the so called "Free Game Service" ? There has been no update since the first week of October and even the Premium Service ( i have CA 2019) delivered the last games as automatic update on 12/03.
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2018-12-22 17:54
I don't know the answer.  I never got my games from them.  I always used TWIC.  They have a very nice service, and its free.  They do ask for donations, but that is voluntary as far as I can tell.  I recommend them as an alternative.
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) Date 2018-12-22 19:10 Edited 2019-01-06 06:02
I always download the games from TWIC using bash:
cd '/home/user/TWIC'
curl -O[1248-1256]
unzip \*.zip
rm *.zip
cat *.pgn > TWIC.txt
mv TWIC.txt ./Aktuell/TWIC.pgn

I have an old version of Rybka Aquarium 4 (2010). Back then I had to check for updates/patches. How does it work now for newer versions like Aquarium 2019?

Parent - By gabeeg (*) Date 2019-01-23 00:28
Now we don't get updates...just new versions to buy.
