Hello, Daniel!

How much positions you have started with 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. Bc4 ... ?

P.S. Btw, TCEC 11 Traxler (game 55):

http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?pid=579115#pid579115

Sad, even after 20. f4 (!) black can draw 20... Qh6 (!).

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Bc5 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. Bb3 d6 7. d3 Qe8 8. Nf3 Bg4 9. Be3 Qg6 10. Nbd2 Raf8 11. Bxc5 dxc5 12. h3 Bxf3 13. Qxf3 Nd4 14. Qe3 Qxg2 15. O-O-O Ne8

Just confirms how bad was 6. Bb3, third best move.

Computers have violent disagreements analyzing Traxler positions.

For each of these positions, the number that follows the position is the standard deviation of the evaluation of chess engines for the position.  Many are rather comical.

Daniel, it's very good you have so much Traxler positions.
Just i think - if we need found a refutation of Traxler, then wanna look only for good (very good) moves from both sides, not extend a moves tree bigger than Universe.
Parent - - By user923005 (****) [us] Date 2018-05-16 23:11
The move chains that go all the way to checkmate are from famous games by famous players.
Parent - - By Lazy Frank (****) [gb] Date 2018-05-17 04:27
I can't get what is common in between famous players and refutation, even more today we have powerful tools.

Also, some of the 12 move mates are really, really beautiful.
Look at them.  I promise you won't be disappointed.
There is surprise in the box.
Well, maybe not for you, but there was for me.
I am very glad that I analyzed them.
I am even more glad that I scrutinized them after.

5 Nxf7 is more widely played as the fork is so tempting

The same about 6. Bb3 or Bd5 after 5. Bxf7, Bc4 played rarely.

It does not lead to what white thinks it should be.

all i know is that wild gameplay ensues with 2 knights defense which is probably the reason it's not played much anymore

all i know is that I spent some time looking at some lines and it is hard to be sure what lines are best even with god's hand helping

Behind scenes (moves description):

5. Bxf7+

Nxf7 draws, only one logical continuation.

6. Bc4

On square b3 bishop is paired with black knight Nc6 (one move distance - Nd4/Na5).
On square d5 bishop is paired with black knight Nf6 (directly),
knight Nc6 (one move distance Nb4/Ne7) and counter paired with knight Nc6 (Bxc6).
On square c4 bishop is paired with black knight Nc6 (one move distance Na5).

Black by pawn f7 sacrifice prepare attack white king pawn defender f2.
To defend pawn f2 white Ng5 come back to Nf3 (wall against rook f8).
Bc4 consequently prepare (Be2) to defend Nf3 (against Bg4).

But most important advantage of Bc4 move - black can't play d6.
If black plays d6, then white answers Nc3.

7. Nc3

Continue disable for black successful play d6 (fails to Nd5+).
Queen side development.

8. Nf3

Direct threat.

9. 0-0

King safety (finally diagonal c8-h3 is opened for black LSB).
No time stay in center and long castle request 3 more tempo's.

10. a4

Queen side development.
Do not allow play Kf7.
Keep flexible configuration pd3+pe4+Bc4/pd3+pe4+Be2.

11. Be2

Defend Nf3 and prepare advance c-pawn.

12. Nxd4

Avoid of pawn setup white d3+e4 vs black d6+e5.

13. Na2

Pawn e4 is much much more important than a4.

14. d3

Protect pawn e4.
Setup d3+e4 now works, black pawn structure was damaged before.

15. Bd2

If [corr-]chess-analysis would be just so simply-straightforward! Pretty sure Bd5 is good as well...

Ok. For me Be2 and not allow d6 is enough.
After white Bd5 black plays Rf8 and then d6, typical setup.

By accident i found one test game:

[ECO "C44"]
[Opening "Scotch Gambit"]
[Variation "Anderssen (Paulsen) Counterattack"]
[PlyCount "30"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Bc5 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. Bd5 Rf8 7. O-O d6
8. c3 Bg4 9. Nf3 Qe8 10. d4 exd4 11. Bxc6 bxc6 12. cxd4 Bb6 13. e5 Ne4 14.
exd6+ Kd8 15. a4 Qh5

15... cxd6 loses, 15... Qh5 draw.

8. h3 seems to be better, 8. Bxc6 bxc6 9. Nf3 Bg4 10. d3 (maybe 10. h3) a serious option.

After 8. c3 Bg4, 9. Qb3 can also be checked.

It's just test game, not pretend to high precision.

Was just feeding you with a few quick ideas.
Parent - - By Lazy Frank (****) [gb] Date 2018-05-12 04:45 Edited 2018-05-12 05:03
Agree, game starts after white played 0-0 and black played d6.
Let's compare visual initial position (white to move, white already played 0-0, black already played d6):

First picture Bc4, second - Bd5:

Hmmm ... practically only by h6 white have corrected Nf3 and developed Nc3 (Bc4).
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2018-05-12 06:42
I agree - visually it looks better (and objectively most likely it will be!), yet in corr-chess you often also see it the other way: Ng5 is still an attacking piece, Bd5 gives still the possibility to double-pawn that knight (which is a good defender) and h6 is just a useful move for Black anyway.

Thats why serious analysis - what you currently do - is needed (but never underestimate some interesting sidelines, especially those of the other side!).

That why in my line white call Nc6 to d4 and remove by pawn a4 sacrifice, but save Be2.

Seems legit. Few (ok, many) years ago I had the same idea to poke the Traxler with Bxf7+ and reached the same conclusion about the move Bc4.

Can I somehow join and help with this Traxler-refuting-activity? :)

Of course, you can share your ideas and moves here.

zaarcis already scored an unbelieveable win in that line.

:D Yes!
Parent - - By zaarcis (***) [lv] Date 2018-05-18 16:19
Ok, then I will explore variations with Bc4 and c3 (with following d4 or b4, if it's possible) and return a month or few later with results.
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2018-05-18 16:39
You guys should play two games, that benefits your both's analysis. First game zaarcis plays Black vs. LF's approach, and second game LF's vs. that c3-d4/b4-idea.

Sure, that's completely okay.

I am analyzing various lines from the Traxler.
It will take a long time to go through the data, because I have 28,195 positions that need examination.

PGN from the original traxler games (or discussions of Traxler lines) is attached.

A fascinating study of a long standing question regarding the integrity of the Traxler. Out of interest, which engines are you using for the study?

First pass is SF, afterwards Houdini, Komodo and whatever else strikes my fancy.

There are tens of thousands of positions that need analyzed.  So my current pass is to eliminate those which are already clearly won for one side or the other.
Unfortunately, a shallow search is no good, since the Traxler is an opening with enormous reversals when analyzed.
Parent - - By zaarcis (***) [lv] Date 2018-10-08 21:30
Aren't the most reversals found in the Nxf7 variation? I can hardly imagine any reversal (except from "white wins" to "damn, that's a draw") after Bxf7+.

Don't know yet.
I have 28,257 positions to examine to depth.
I guess it will be a week before I have any sensible results.

As an illustration of why the Traxler is so volatile, analyze the attached EPD record sets and watch the evaluation do amazing roller-coaster swoops.
