I would jump for joy if I could interact with python code passing info back and forth within the scripting environment

I wish that Aquarium IDeA would change its response when I hover the cursor over an event under analysis.  Now it gives some help information in a popup... it would be nice if it gave the current analysis in the popup... that way a click would not be required to get the analysis status.

An old wish of mine that has recently come back into mind... I wish that IDeA could assign engines on a project basis!!

It would make things a lot easier when you have multiple projects with different engines in each.  Also, it would make simultaneous analysis of more than 1 project more efficient, especially cache wise.  It doesn't seem like a difficult thing to add to the project xml file... but of course, I am on the outside looking in, everything seems easier when one is just making suggestions, and not actually performing the programming.

If assignment of engines on a project basis is not possible (or easily done), it would be nice, at the least, to improve the % of CPU time sharing algorithm.  Right now I have 2 projects running sharing 12 threads of engines... and each is assigned 50% in IDeA CPU time.  But the threads keep swapping back and forth.  Logically it seems each project should get 6 threads and the threads would not be swapped back and forth... thus insuring more efficient cache usage..  If one project were to go idle, for minimax as an example, then the other project could assume some of the threads, but I would not give all to the other project, it would be nice to reserve SOME cpu time for the minimax (which now does not factor into the algorithm).

I guess I am just full of wishes... <g>

Anyway, as a part of my recent upgrade of my computer (I am now using Windows 10 and a Ryzen 1700X), I also upgraded my copy of Chessbase.  I went whole hog, and bought the latest (I think), Chessbase 14 and I must say I am very impressed with their "cloud" features.  It really helps me working with Aquarium IDeA... I think that the Aquarium development team should look into this sort of feature for their product.  It would greatly enhance the IDeA system.

As it is, I can use the cloud features in Chessbase and manually transfer the relevant information manually to IDeA.  I have already discovered at least 1 new key move per day with the help of the Chessbase cloud.

I just noticed that results of IA are being added to the notation pane in IDeA.  For me this is very confusing, as I use a number of different engines for IA.  Having the results all jumbled up makes the notation pane VERY hard to read and understand.

If there is no way to stop this, I wish there WAS.

By the way, talking about IA, I have started to use Strelka 5.5 for IA, and I really like it.  I routinely use: Houdini, Critter, Rybka, Stockfish, Zappa Mexico II, Komodo, and now Strelka for IA analysis.  I like to have several running at the same time during IDeA runs.

Here's another wish of mine that has been around for a long time.

At present, there are Custom Tasks available for a) first root and b) root.  There should be a Custom Task available for "New Leaf".  That would be really cool!  And this Custom Task by default should be simply "x" number of alternatives generated to a depth of "y".  Of course, where x and y are specified by the user.  x=1 and y=1 would amount to the same as the current situation, x=5 and y=1 would seem to be about average for most situations.  It would be nice if the program allowed these parameters to be changed via a dialog box inside the program, instead of forcing the user to go to a text editor external to the program.

I could be mistaken, but I think this should be pretty easy to add to the program.

Since I have lots of suggestions/wishes, it may seem like I don't like Aquarium... nothing could be further from reality.  I like it A LOT.

Okay, here is another suggestion, allow multiple Alternative presses before the previous Alternative has finished evaluation.  I spend much time waiting to add a 2md or 3rd alternative... waiting for the previous alternative to calculate.  If required have the event queue sort out the wait, allow the user to add the event to the queue and move on.

I know this may be a complicated request, but it is far easier for the computer to manage, than it is for the user to "cool his jets" waiting manually.

Just have the queue be able to chain the events together, not executing the next one in the chain until the previous one has finished.  Easier said than done, I know, I know.

But if it was easy, I would pay someone else the $$$ each year for this type of software.  It isn't easy, so ChessOk gets my dough.

As a side note, if the program could chain events in this manner, other events besides Alternative generation could be chained.  For example, Custom Task often refuses to enter an event in queue if there is already an event in queue that must be done first.  Just chain them together and allow the user to move on to the next thing he wants to work thru.

One of my daily chores is to erase the IA tree.  All IA analysis is stored in it... so it can become quite large, very fast.

I suggest that this tree be limited to just the first 30 plies of any game (moves 1-15), and that plies >30 be stored in individual trees project by project.  Thus somewhat limiting the size of the IA tree to more common positions.  This would greatly lessen the need to erase it to keep it from growing out-of-control.

In Chessbase there is the "Lock" icon for kibitzers.  Using this icon, one may lock an engine to analyze a given position (while you navigate away), or if you unlock the kibitzer, it will follow as you navigate.  This is a very cool feature, especially if you are using more than 1 kibitzer.  Something like this would be perfect for the IA engines in IDeA.  This way some engines could be locked while others follow as you navigate.  Way neat, in my opinion.

I don't know how many times I've done this, but when I start IDeA and no project is active, Aquarium throws up a list of all projects, all checked, as if you might want to begin evaluation on all of them.

Instead, I think it more logical that Aquarium would simply assume you want the project that is currently on-screen....

I have a lot of projects... I cannot think of a single time that I have wanted to begin evaluation on more than a couple (3 or 4 at most) at any one time.  And I surely never want to deal with a list of 50 or more projects.  So I just cancel that and manually make the current project active.

Seems a no-brainer to me.  But my High School math teacher always said my brain worked backwards compared to most other folks!

If no project is active Aquarium is indeed show a list on the projects, but none of them are checked. I'm assuming that you have a number of projects that are marked as active, but not opened and thus not visible on the left side. You can check it if you look at Project List, the ones that are active will be black, inactive will be greyed out. In this case I would suggest you click on arrow bellow Active button and choose Deactivate all projects. Then you can activate the ones that are opened or you want to work with.

I just tried it... you are right.  The list has no project checked.  But I still request that the current on-screen project be the assumed project and it be auto activated.

I confess I never looked closely at the list, I just knew it was a long list and was a bother to look thru it for the project I wanted (which was always the on-screen project... in other words, the project I am currently working on).  Even when analyzing multiple projects simultaneously, I am always dealing with the current on-screen project.  I do not know why the system would assume otherwise.

So as it is, I always have a 2 step process... activate then start IDeA.  And I see no reason (in my work with the program).  Why a 2 step process is needed escapes me.

I have a single simple wish for Aquarium 2018.

Please put the record numbers back in the database.

it is almost impossible to sort and multi-select games without this, so I end up doing that in Aquarium 2011, which appears to be the last time this column had numbers in it.
