I'm running Aquarium 2015 under Wine in MacOS and it cuts off the top of the screen ... see image.  Can this be fixed?  Does Aquarium 2017 have the same problem?

I do not think Aq 2017 is Wine compatible.  There seems to be some problem with the database functions that support the tree structures.  This is one of the reasons I am investigating the use of Virtualbox, instead of Wine.

Of course, the drawback would be that while Virtualbox is free, I would still have to pay for a Windows license.  Microsoft wants their due.  I guess Wine gets around that issue??

But then the emulation of Windows functionality is less than perfect.

He's talking about Aquarium 2015, not 2017.

EDIT: My bad. Please ignore what I just said.

Of course, but he asked if Aq 2017 would help.

Yes:  Wine gets around the windows licensing issue.  Instead of doing a complete VM, it uses a compatibility layer.  It's quick to load (basically feels like running a normal app) and requires less RAM and less CPU.  From wikipedia:  Wine duplicates functions of Windows by providing alternative implementations of the DLLs that Windows programs call, and a process to substitute for the Windows NT kernel. This method of duplication differs from other methods that might also be considered emulation, where Windows programs run in a virtual machine. Wine is predominantly written using black-box testing reverse-engineering, to avoid copyright issues.

Did you try disabling window manager window decorations and controls (winecfg → Graphics options)?

I didn't know about winecfg.  Ok, tried it.  I unchecked those two checkboxes and restarted Aquarium, but it didn't help.

I don't have any Macs around so I cannot test it myself, but it looks like they added a setting to disable decorations in Wine 1.7.7 after this bug:
wine regedit

and then add "Decorated" key with value 0 to HKCU:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Mac Driver]
"Decorated"="0"

Also try "N" if "0" doesn't work.

Other solution might be to disable Mac driver and use X11 and then disable decorations:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Drivers]
"Graphics"="x11"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"Decorated"="N"

Under HEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine I don't see a Mac Driver folder.  Am I to create one?

Yeah... I'm far from being a Wine expert...

Check if you've got Decorated under X11 Driver, if not create it first.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"Decorated"="N"

Ok, didn't have to try this because the above solution with Decorated set to 0 worked.

Hey, this worked!  (I was having some trouble as I had forgotten what little I knew about regedit.)

To repeat what you wrote, I did this:

add "Decorated" key with value 0 to HKCU:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Mac Driver]
"Decorated"="0"

One problem I have with this solution is that with no window decoration, I can't seem to grab the window with the mouse to drag it around.  Though I can resize the window, and "move" it that way.

This usually fixes it, so maybe wine was still running and you didn't close it properly, so just uncheck this "allow window manager to decorate windows" (or similar) and the problem is solved.
Please note this topic, I made it stick again: http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?tid=5782

Felix:  Even after a reboot of my Macbook Air (again, running Sierra), unchecking "allow window manager to decorate windows" in winecfg still didn't work.  But, as you may see above, I did get it to work by adding a "Decorated"="0" entry under a Mac Driver key.

Felix:  Does Aquarium 2017 work under Wine?  I'd like to upgrade at some point.

About Aquarium 2016: not so far. The new dll for trees doesn't work so everything with creating or manipulating trees does not work. This makes IDeA and colouring moves in tree unusable... The latter is essential to me :-)
The last Aquarium that runs fine is 2015.
