I'm not sure why this is happening to me way too often, say every other day.

Aquarium has been sitting and thinking about a root position (or a couple) within one project. All of a sudden I get a pop-up saying position not found, along with a string of chess figurines, and when I x it out, it comes up again, and I am fairly sure my tree has become munged. And I have to start from scratch, losing thousands of positions.

Why is this happening? I have done nothing funky. I am at the "appliance button pusher" level of use.

The folks that might be able to offer advice probably need more info.  At least tell us which version of Aquarium you are using, which build number (you can find this in the About box... under Help).  Also, did you see my bug report (in this forum) about my own problem with new small trees?  So is this happening in established larger trees, or in new small trees (less than 10,000 evaluations)?

To even guess, we need more info about your setup.

One other thing that I notice, Aquarium seems to have more problems the faster you process evaluations... so if you are getting more than 700 per hour, you might try to slow things down a bit by taking the evaluations to a greater depth, say 22 ply instead of 16 (or whatever you are using).

Having little info provided can easily make my guesses look silly.

Thanks.

1) Aquarium is 9.5.0 Build 950. I thought this was the most recent. I have had prior versions, but computer(s) died, and i just repurchased new a few months ago.

2) Seems like both larger and smaller trees

3) I'm not running a search on ply, but on time. I'm running on a regular current i7, at 4ghz. I am hitting way past 16 ply, usually 26 or more.

4) Haven't seen your bug report. Will look.

5) is there a newer version? If so, where can I download from?

Thanks again.

How much time are you using, remember I wrote that more than 700 evals per hour can start running into difficulties... because the evals are being calculated faster than the backend can update the database that stores the tree.

So the take away was not the ply depth... but the time.  However you didn't mention your time setting.  I don't use time myself, I always specify a certain ply depth.  This makes for more uniform quality of eval.

And the time can vary... so 700 per hour is what I get on my machine.  I run a rather slow hard drive, so folks with fast SSDs can get a higher thruput... because the backend database updates faster on faster drives.  All a rather complex situation.  I have estimated all this on my system, it could vary widely on your system.  I have an old i7 and slow drives... you have a newer faster i7 and probably faster drives as well.

But since you are having problems I suspect your calculation rate is too fast.  For example, if your time per eval is 10 seconds, try 30 seconds... etc etc.

I am using the same release and build as you have.  I am not aware of any newer release.

Thanks. I do have an SSD.
