Just for those who do not know it: On analysis.sesse.net you get again top analysis of the karjakin-carlsen match
Parent - - By irulats (****) [ie] Date 2016-11-17 22:24 Edited 2016-11-17 22:57
That's great Felix. Thanks

BTW, Is there anywhere, you're aware of that allows you to grab the pgn up as far as the current position without having to type them up yourself?

Update: Found it! Mind went blank there for a minute or 2
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-18 09:03
the agon policy with the moves is pretty annoying.

(just for those searching: one option is http://pgn.sesse.net/ (created by an infinite amount of monkeys ;-) ) )
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-18 09:07
although this pgn may not be compatible with the pgn standard, since the {} around the clock command is missing.

This is probably an issue with my PGN writer. I can try to fix it before game 7, but game 6 is probably a bit too close.
Parent - - By nebulus (****) [no] Date 2016-11-18 23:20
While you are at it, you should probably also fix the order of the mandatory tags. Should be:

Event
Site
Date
Round
White
Black
Result
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-18 23:44
Order fixed, comments fixed. So PGNs will be better from round 7 onwards. There won't be more options to the UI, though; there are already too many, and users are having huge problems understanding all of them.

This is a brilliant resource. Much appreciated!
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-01 18:15
Thank you so much for covering the event, Steinar! Seems like your website was more popular than ever before :-)
Parent - - By Labyrinth (*****) [us] Date 2016-12-01 22:32
It was. People were mentioning it everywhere, like on chess24, youtube etc. I think even Svidler during his live commentary was peaking at it, but he didn't give the name exactly. He just said something like 'the supercomputer is reporting'.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-02 00:56
well, he also said "sesse", but it looked like he thought the computers name was sesse :-)
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-12-02 08:31
Actually this is very common, for some reason. I guess it's for lack of a better name. (And it's certainly no supercomputer!)

But yes, there was lots of positive interest—last WCC peaked around 1500 simultaneous viewers, this time around we had 8900. So thanks to everybody bringing the word out :-)

Are there legal reasons you skip the London Chess Classic's? I mean, no one wants to see Giri-games, but the others are pretty entertaining... /* Antonius */
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-12-10 18:35
No, no legal reasons. I just haven't cared too much (I didn't even know it was ongoing).

There were some real good&fascinating games @London (especially's Kramnik's "escape"), but while everyone can beat Topalov these days, Drawish Giri -playing no-risk-chess for a draw with white pieces- can not... he really could(&would) bore Carlsen to death, but doubt he has even near Karjakin's defence-skills...
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-12-18 18:24
Wow, my favorite Girl-GM Drawish Giri found another miracle draw for White - beginning with move 1... congrats, another 9 draws/9 games! His [drawn] White-games can be used to calibrate any engine-eval at any move&position to exactly 0.00 !
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-18 22:20
it is not "drawish giri". he is called "the artist"
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-12-19 08:35 Edited 2016-12-19 08:58

> he is called "the artist"

Oh, i always thought this is a darts-player?!

CB has some good news for chess-fans: "Not much of a chance for Giri to join the Grand Chess Tour next year. In a conspicuously relaxed attitude, Giri said, he would have to seek out for a life on the streets next year, playing with the hustlers." I love you Caissa!
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-19 19:26
he is called the artist, because he likes to draw.
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [gb] Date 2016-12-19 20:49
He can draw anything!
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-20 09:05
the funny thing is that he frequently draws winning positions. Seems to be a mental thing.

I wonder why torunament organizers do not prefer unpredictable, creative and interesting players such as Morozevich :-) . Kramnik, for instance, can play very agressive and nice attacking chess, but he needs the right opponent to be forced into it.

> the funny thing is that he frequently draws winning positions. Seems to be a mental thing.

The not so funny thing is: Against weaker opponents, he draws his way to wins! :yell:

> I wonder why torunament organizers do not prefer unpredictable, creative and interesting players such as Morozevich :-)

100% agree, Moro / Chucky in their best years or Nepo / Mamedyarov / Eljanov / Malakhov / Rapport / Jobava ... and a few of the young chinese are so much more enjoyful to watch.
Parent - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-12-19 21:13
lol, while his games are interesting like watching a painting dry, he won't be remembered a Picasso of chess... hell, even Drawjakin is an attacking-master compared to him...

Anand is another disappointment, instead of fighting for his place in next years tour (3rd was possible for him...) he simply refused playing... let's just hope So or Caruana are the next opponents of Carlsen.

Also have an option to turn the arrows off. Hehe all these requests.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-23 01:31
Excellent, thank you so much, now I can paste the pgn to Aquarium :-)
Btw., I sent you an email with my merida piece set, maybe you want to use it (I exported it to 80x80 pngs)
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [se] Date 2016-11-23 14:49
I didn't receive anything yet, but sometimes things get a bit delayed :-) I don't really control the chess set myself, though; I'm just using chessboard.js and whatever it provides. (I'm quite happy with the current set, at any rate.) Perhaps I should add more sets as an easter egg if you click ten times on f7 or something :-)
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-23 16:11 Edited 2016-11-23 16:18
You would just need to replace the graphics in http://analysis.sesse.net/img/chesspieces/wikipedia/
I'll attach the pieces here (the svg archive is for the original files, the pngs in the merida.tar.gz are what you want)
I hope you agree that they look a bit more aesthetically pleasing, yet similar enough to the piece set you currently use :-)
Attachment: Merida.tar.gz (37k)
Attachment: svgs.tar.gz (26k)

I too made my own pieces, but they are bmp and I made them for thief and I don't think they'd be to everyone's liking. Look like this. Been meaning to make them svg but I the last time I tried I didn't like any of the free programs I found.

I originally gave them horizontal and vertical symmetry, but then I couldn't tell which way the board was oriented at a glance. Also it's difficult to get such symmetry for the knight and king and have it still 'translate' as such.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-24 13:02 Edited 2016-11-24 13:11
well, these pieces are based on the Merida piece set by Armando Hernandez Marroquin, so basically they were converted to svg (by Dadi?) in the early Aquarium days and then I did the following:
1) adding colour gradients
2) simplifying the paths and modifying the shapes slightly
3) heavily changing the rook design and changing the queens a little bit, modifying the white pawns to look as nice as the black ones

So I basically just modified the work by Armando Hernandez Marroquin who did a great job, especially with his beautiful knights :-)

(see https://marcelk.net/chess/pieces/ for the original theme at the bottom)
Parent - - By Labyrinth (*****) [us] Date 2016-11-25 00:27
Ahh, Meridia looks pretty good, but I really like the alpha as well.
Parent - By nebulus (****) [no] Date 2016-11-25 02:23
cburnett FTW!
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-26 22:54
I agree, these are probably the nicest fonts.
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-11-27 14:46
Sadly, the pretty lame 11th game wouldn't have looked like a SuperGM-game in either of those... :yell:, yet i got a near heart-attack when sesse missed Qc8+ before c4 and it was shown a mate in 8 first...
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-27 15:17
FWIW, the television broadcast actually showed it like that, and I didn't catch the correction when it arrived (people around me were talking loudly at the moment). From what I heard, Chessbomb showed the same at the time (although I don't transcribe from Chessbomb).

Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-27 16:33
I think this is a problem of the organizers and not yours :-) They should simply provide a pgn.
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-27 18:07
I assume you haven't been living under a rock and know Agon's attitude towards streaming moves online right?

In general, getting moves as a small site is hard. I've had tournaments provide me with a live PGN feed once or twice; most of the time, tournament organizers don't even bother responding when I ask. (Case in point: Qatar 2016, aka blitz/rapid world championships, haven't answered me back.)

/* Steinar */
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-27 19:42
Sure, I know about it :-) and I strongly disagree with their reasoning.

I remember that when people used only the DGT transmission software one could look for the pgn in the website's source code for the pgn. It is also interesting to see how small the percentage of websites stating the pgn is on http://theweekinchess.com/live .
Maybe I should try to figure out the url for the pgn of the world championship - it may be hidden, but there will be one :-)
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-27 20:16
ok, maybe it is too hard to guess, can't figure out any pgn url unfortunately :-) one needs to write a software to read the position from a live transmission board ;-)
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-28 23:51
I know where to get a PGN feed from. But given Agon's stance, this feels the safest.

I hope that it doesn't go to blitz…

Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-29 00:21
not to speak of a nice armageddon time scramble ;-) at least they get an increment even there (this is unusual, right?)
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-29 08:33
They get increment only after move 60. I think that's a good tradeoff.

/* Steinar */
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-29 15:53
yes, but I always thought that this winning on time was included in the argmageddon idea with the 5/4 minutes. With this format black has an even bigger advantage, since it's more difficult to lose on time.
Parent - - By Sesse (****) [no] Date 2016-11-29 17:26
It prevents white from just stalling to win a drawn position. Armageddon games that actually go to move 60 with an uncertain result are rare.

I remember the Socko Foisor incident where only a video could prove a lying arbiter wrong who asked Socko to show him a possible win in K+N against K+N just to say afterwards that he doesn't know what the last position was and decided it to be a draw. She had to go to the appeals committee and the arbiter was pretty rude, also to Iweta being there as support.
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-29 18:13 Edited 2016-11-29 18:17
ah and of cause this beautiful game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNQjXHjRkNQ , but this may be prior to move 60 ;-)
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-11-30 21:32 Edited 2016-11-30 22:35
ok, first two games drawn and magnus disappointed his fans by not finding the obvious mate in 51 :-) maybe there will be blitz, I would like to see the world championship decided by a blundered piece ;-) like carlsen - nakamura :-)
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-12-01 10:47

> ok, first two games drawn and magnus disappointed his fans by not finding the obvious mate in 51 :-)

Actually he disappointed because he behaved like a spoiled brat after his loss in game 8 (he didn't talk to the Norwegian blonde after game 9 as well...) and the very uninspired classical-play... a new low point in WCH-history.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2016-12-01 18:13
well, we are used to that from Magnus.
Parent - - By Antares (****) [de] Date 2016-12-01 19:36
:-), with his strengh of play he simply can afford it, yet as Seirawan pointed out: Fischer would have played down to spare kings in such a game 12. But enough of chess... do you think Naka (just see his smile!) had a serious date with Irina?

Parent - By Labyrinth (*****) [us] Date 2016-12-01 22:36
I think he's married to Marie de Rosa.

That's about the best picture I've ever seen of Krush though.
