Would Bobby Fischer have beaten Karpov for the World Chess Championship, back when he was suppose to play him?

That can be debated for eternity.

If Fischer was in shape and ready to do what he does, he would have won. If not, Karpov had an excellent shot at winning.

One thing that is interesting is that each time Karpov played a WC match he improved his chess substantially afterward, win or loss. So had he played and lost, he may have become much stronger than he was, and the contests with Kasparov may have gone differently.
