As the old adage goes "It's only cheating if you get caught."

I expect many of the players on any online site would be seeking "help" from chess engines.

It's a mess.

First they handled it too publicly, and by the time they retracted things the damage had been done. Second, they're in kind of a difficult position where they don't want to talk about their anti-cheating methods which they claim are state of the art, but at the same time one of the players is heavily disputing the accusation and others aren't finding the games as suspicious as they think they should be.

They could wait and see if one of the players tries for a defamation lawsuit, and then try to convince the court of the efficacy and accuracy of their cheating detection methods. I don't know how civil courts would work across different countries though.

They could save face by spilling their guts about their cheating detection measures, and fully nail this guy if they think it's so blatant. That would give cheaters on the site the tools they need to better hide their cheating measures, so it's a tough decision. They might just wait and see if it blows over.

I agree with you. I think they are as sure as they can be, that cheating occurred but got emotional about revealing the culprits. It's awkward for the 2 guys that were exposed as well. It will probably blow over though.

I think if you're caught cheating any and all public humiliation
brought about by it is your own damn fault.
They damaged their reps and egos? TOO BAD.

Perhaps they won't do it again and it will serve as an example to everyone thinking about doing something similar.

Now If their methods for finding (C) cheaters are anything less than scientific then we have moral issues here not legal ones. Not sure they could prosecute a privately owned website on a conspiracy to defame with no malice intended or that which could be proven.

They might as well let the GM's play as Centaurs because there won't be anyway to keep it in check with the tech boom. It will come to that sooner or later I'm afraid,

Then it will come down to money not brains.
