Up Topic Correspondence Chess / WBCCC 2014 / Best game nominations and decision
- By Garvin Gray (****) Date 2014-12-10 00:53
After a couple of posts in the WBCCC 2014 prize money thread, I made this decision:

Simple solution.

I will be sole and final judge. Everyone who FINISHED THE EVENT gets to nominate any of the games from WBCCC 2014, and then I will look through them, as well as the threads that were going at the time for comments, thoughts etc and make a determination.

Nominations close 3 days from now. So start nominating. Condition of nomination. If you see a game already nominated, do not try and nominated it a second time. That will not bias the judge in any way
- - By Garvin Gray (****) Date 2014-12-10 00:54
So this thread is created so everyone can get nominating for best game. Remember, if you see a game already nominated, please do not nominated a second time.

Going to nominate my own game v Paul who was going in undefeated in these tours.

Plus looking at the game you will see how white exposed black's pieces in the endgame.

If you take your engine score's as we entered the key faze of the game you will see the engine's could not see black's problems.

This game was key to me sharing first.

congratulations on winning the best game prize.

there are many endgames like that, where one side is completely winning but it takes 20-30 moves for the engines to see what is going to happen.  it's rare for the execution of the win to be so necessarily prolonged as it was in your game.  i recall that caruana has noted this when discussing engine weaknesses and strengths in an interview.  i was on the losing end of such an endgame against an IM in a recent tournament in which the engines were giving (-.6) for about 40 moves after I (with White) was objectively completely lost (for the computer to be so wrong for long was a new experience though).  i think i will post that endgame elsewhere eventually, probably do a blog on it, it was quite interesting (BR v BR L sq bishops both and my pawn locked on h3 (isolated)...  and locked pawns f3 and e4 but Black with d6 weakness and both sides with all pieces covering the weaknesses...) and there are details i probably still don't understand.  also the carlsen - anand berlin endgame with an extra piece was probably a win for white until anand achieved ...a5 although the technique is very elaborate.

omg, i should get up to actually uploading all the games this year... will do tomorrow, absolutely tomorrow.

No winner yet just a nomination you are free to nominate any game.

Yes i agree engine's can still be slow to see such positions.

i was fairly clearly joking with my congratulations on winning the best game prize although it seems to be an exceptionally likely and worthy game of the tournament candidate.  undoubtedly it will be easy to be critical of a few of paul's decisions (to go for a long and lost ending) on a thorough analysis of the game but difficult to pick your poison and an outstanding piece of AN and clever choice of line on your part, especially since Paul played ...Nc6, but even so it should be very tenable for Black.

re: engine evals:  obviously depends on the position and they often play the positions quite strongly even if evaluation off in endgame.

I knew quite early in the game I was going to lose this, nothing much to do with engine horizons. My opening play was not good and I was under pressure from early on.
David exploited his advantage well.
As I said in another post I should have double checked LK's analysis don't know how I could have played much better after move 14.

What I said was:

So you can nominate your own games if you wish.

I don't know if any of my decisive games deserve a nomination. In my 2 loses I played horribly. In my win against Garvin I just took advantage of an engine hole I knew about beforehand. Probably the other win against Mark was the most notable of my decisive games.

You can nominate game's not played by yourself if you find them worthy.
Parent - By Morpheus (****) [pl] Date 2014-12-11 06:22
Exacly. That what I ask Arbiter before. It's make sens when we nominate others game
Parent - By trandism (**) [gr] Date 2014-12-11 10:29
Of course I can. But in order to do that I have to study them first. Nominating a game won by database superiority is not something I would like and in order to avoid that I have to check all games with DBs and engines.

Becoz I am not that a worthy player, I dont think I played anything worth. So  no nominations from me.

He will have to search for that as they are rare,

All precious things are rare.  It's not easily available like your loses which are cheap.

Decision time. After looking through the games. And considering all the factors already discussed, I am going to award the best game prize to David Evans for his win against Paul Watson. There was a lot of discussion of this game, about whether the game could be won, or could be drawn, and it took a lot of work on both players parts to come to a result. The game was played by both players to a high standard and the winner was required to exploit all the resources of the position to get the extra half a point, where at times it seemed that a win might not be possible.

So for 2014, this game has been awarded the best game of the year award. David Evans 1-0 Paul Watson.

Thanks Garvin it was a key game and took Pauls unbeaten record there was a lot of work that when into the endgame as it was never a gimme lots of human input for those that doubt that check out the game yourself with your computers.

Good luck all next year I will watch with interest..
