Hi all,

I realized I forgot to create a TCEC thread here in this forum, so here goes:

I will make one thread for TCEC Season 7 instead of creating new ones for each Stage.
So the start date was Friday 19th of September at 18:00 CEST (16:00 UTC), we are still in the 1st round of Stage 1a as of this time of writing.
There are 4 Stages plus the Superfinal.

All action can be viewed here:
http://tcec.chessdom.com/

All news will be posted here (you don't need to be a Facebook member to read it):
https://www.facebook.com/tcec.chess

At the bottom of this list you can find the list of participants with version numbers.

The top 7 from each of Stage 1a/1b will qualify for Stage 2.
The top 7 from Stage 2 will qualify for Stage 3.
The top 4 from Stage 3 will qualify for Stage 4.
The top 2 from Stage 4 will qualify for the Superfinal.
The winner of the Superfinal will be the new TCEC Grand Champion.

All book openings are again handled by Nelson Hernandez (except Stage 2 which will be run without books).

The same hardware like previous Season is available, meaning 16 cores per engine (ponder off) and up to 16 GB hash table.
Time control is the same at 120' + 30" per move, but for this Season all use of tablebases for the engines is not allowed (except for GUI adjudication of 5-men or less positions).

Hi Martin,

On another thread here someone has suggested that the Houdini you are using is an updated version - it is shown as Houdini 4 in the TCEC list - can you confirm which it is?
Parent - - By Martin Thoresen (***) [se] Date 2014-09-20 22:22
Houdini has not been updated, it is the normal H4

Thanks Martin

Great stuff Martin! I find myself every day (every season) more and more addicted. BTW who is Adam Hair?
As for rating list, it just seems unnatural to have Gull 86 points below Houdini, and 20 below Rybka.

Congratulations to Komodo and Stockfish for qualifying for the Superfinal.
I think many people will say Stage 4 was very exciting - it was very close and not clear until the end who would qualify for the Superfinal.

The Superfinal is now live and can be followed on the live page:
http://tcec.chessdom.com/live.php

The Superfinal is a 64 game match where they will play black & white of the same opening. The openings are again assembled by Nelson Hernandez & Adam Hair and filtered by IM Erik Kislik.
You can find some notes from Erik in the "Opening Book" link at the top of the TCEC website.

The rating list has also been updated after Stage 4, you can find it here in the archive page:

Great watch and well done Komodo, pity I cant log in any more as chatwing asks now for to much personal info and I don't use facebook ect.

Agreed. The least invasive route seems to be to log on via LinkedIn, but again I was far from happy doing that, and won't do it again.

aaah so others too could not log in with chatwing, I thought it was just my chrome settings or some add on that I needed.
Parent - - By Martin Thoresen (***) [se] Date 2014-12-29 11:16
No, it was not a problem with your computer. Chatwing logins was disabled because of arb, he abused the easy process they have of creating an account and the fact that they don't offer IP-range bans made it extremely hard for us moderators to keep him away.

So you can thank him for ruining that part of the chat. I have been in contact with Chatwing several times to get them to implement an IP-range ban. No such luck yet though.

Best,
Martin
Parent - By Ray (****) Date 2014-12-29 13:10
OK, but for example, if you want to sign in using Yahoo, chatwing wants access to your entire address book/contact list. Why the heck do they need that ?  Much too invasive. In the end I signed in using LinkedIn, seemed to be the lesser of all the evils. All it wanted there I think was access to my profile, although I'm not absolutely sure. I won't be logging on to chat again, however it doesn't matter much to me - during the course of the season pretty much all I did was check the webpage briefly for the cross-table.

Is there any way to, at the end of a round, replace the current buggy Stockfish version with the updated one that supposedly has the bug repaired (or with one just before the bug appeared)?

I am using 26/11 version and don't know if its good or bad.

how much would it be worth to you?

Haha, I don't have any horses in the race--I just think that it's silly to continue a part of a tournament when one of the engines is buggy and has a bugfix (in spite of its awesome play against Houdini in their most recent game).  In any normal tournament, this would be allowed between rounds.  Not doing this definitely significantly weakens any claims of TCEC being "the real world computer chess championship".

It seems nobody is clear about which is which, not even you !!!

As per current TCEC rules

Engine Updates
The engine programmers can provide updates only before an event starts, not during. However, there will be no extra testing meaning that this is a gamble if the engine could be unstable. The deadline for engine submission is the last game of the current Stage - the goal is to be able to start the next Stage as soon as possible without any significant delay.

Critical Engine Bugs
In the case of a serious, play-limiting bug (like crashing or interface communication problems) not discovered during the pre-Season testing, the engine can be updated once per Stage to fix this/these bug/bugs only. If this update still doesn't fix the problem(s) or if there is no update available, the engine might have the number of cores reduced, have the hash size reduced or have the tablebase access disabled - these changes will remain for the rest of the Stage.

If the SF devs are adding bugs that lower its ELO, that is their problem, not a TCEC problem.

If it was a critical bug making SF crash, that would be a case where the current TCEC rules could be invoked.

I agree, if it is actually the Stockfish team that is submitting the development builds to you before each round.  Is this the case, or are you downloading them from the Stockfish site, which specifically states, "use at your own risk"?

This is a very good question!
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2014-12-16 18:53
It certainly is! Given the nature of the Stockfish development process, competitors are free to try to add bugs (actually exploitable characteristics) to the Stockfish code base. As long as the modifications test well against previous versions of Stockfish, they will be accepted!

Follow up question: who speaks for the Stockfish team in matters related to TCEC?

Very good point this.

Mostly Marco used to point me to the SF build off of abrok he wanted me to use (when he was more involved).

For Season 7 I've used the latest build from abrok in all Stages except the Superfinal, which was compiled by the SF team and sent to me (see here)

Hi Martin,

So which one was actually sent to you ?

I looked into here
but I am not sure about which download it was...

I think this one: https://mega.co.nz/#!VIxHhZLS!0nlX8dW5CGO1HLEAQ_5DiE7B1i76Vuf3OfoBdjdJE6c
, from this post:

@Kiran
Thanks for all the useful information!  I have submitted a pull request with
your suggested Makefile changes giving you full credit.
https://github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish/pull/160

I then used the new Makefile and also changed line 34 to
PGOBENCH = ./$(EXE) bench 16 1 10 default time
so each position got 10 seconds instead of 1.  Compiled
make profile-build ARCH=x86-64-modern COMP=mingw
3 separate times (because profile builds are nondeterministic)
and picked the fastest one using fishbench.

@Joona
The resulting submission is here
https://mega.co.nz/#!VIxHhZLS!0nlX8dW5CGO1HLEAQ_5DiE7B1i76Vuf3OfoBdjdJE6c
The SHA256 of the file is 0f100f708077af8d8d3ae45684d7ae4a47a2664f85b3962402e56ee6b78c9063

The fishbench data for 20 runs compared to the x86-modern version from abrok is

Results for 20 tests for each version:

            Base      Test      Diff
    Mean    713053    663259    49794
    StDev   13881     11400     3462

p-value: 0

which is 7% faster.

I can recompile if another commit is made before the superfinal but I hope someone else submits a faster one.  The build machine was an Intel i7 mobile so someone with a SandyBridge should do even better.
