Up Topic Correspondence Chess / WBCCC 2014 / Ruben Comes Withdrawal- Effect on Cross Table Standings

With Ruben Comes withdrawal, under the competition rules stated here, plus the published fide laws of chess:

1. If a player has completed less than 50 % of his games, his score shall remain in the tournament table (for rating and historical purposes), but the points scored by him or against him shall not be counted in the final standings. The unplayed games of the player are indicated by (-) in the tournament table, and those of his opponents by (+). If neither player is present this will be indicated by two (-).
2. If a player has completed at least 50 % of his games, his score shall remain in the tournament table and shall be counted in the final standings. The unplayed games of the player are shown as indicated as above.

All of Ruben Comes results will be removed from the competition, which is rule 1 above. The rationale is explained as:

1) In round 4 (the one just finished): Ruben did not complete his two games against Garvin Gray and Jitan Stribal. He timed them out. So those get counted as incomplete games.
2) So as those two games are counted as incomplete games, Ruben has completed 8 games and has 9 incomplete (either through timeouts or yet to be played), therefore that is less than 50%. So therefore rule number 1 applies.

I am also mindful of the fact that rule 11 of this competition states:
11) If a player withdraws, or their games time out without an explanation that is accepted by the arbiter, all their games will be removed from the event. In effect they are no longer a participant in the event and no effect on the final placings.

I don't go on social media sites.
But to a layman that does not sound good.

Ruben shared an Albert Einstein quote on his facebook page 11 hours ago, which was liked by 4 others. And five days ago, he changed his profile picture to one with his family and children, liked by 12 others including Pawel.

From FB it seems there was a death of a friend or family. I would suggest giving him another chance to return if possible...

I have always felt uncomfortable about this decision, hence why I was not quick after the 48 hours to move on it. As well as needing time to think of how to adjust the cross table. But I still need to hear from Ruben before I can change anything.

And the official pairings have already been sent to Dadi. Just waiting to hear back from him on that. But the situation does remain that we can not have the games start and not be played.

I can confirm from reading further on Ruben facebook's page that there has been a death in the family or friend. If I do hear from Ruben soon after the round starts, I will contact Dadi and see if something can be worked out. But I do need to hear from Ruben before anything changes.
