Stockfish results for the Bednorz-Tönissen-BT2630-04 test are very surprising ??!! to minus...Stockfish, the best engine on the world, solved this task worse than even the old Shredder9 and Junior10 and much worse than DR3, H1.5, DF11, DH12:

No 04 - Bt2630, times:
Stockfish 4:                     02:11,
Stockfish DD:                   05:49, 01:43
Stockfish 191013 (04'14):   05:08, 01:22, 03:05

Deep Fritz 11:                  00:14, 00:11
Deep Hiarcs 12:                00:04
Houdini 1.5:                     00:04
Deep Rybka 3:                  00:02

Junior 10.1:                      00:36
Shredder 9:                      01:06, 01:07

I was testing 32-bit versions Stockfish and my others legally engines, including old Junior 10.1 and Shredder 9.
Stockfish settings are suitable for 4 cores Q6600 (4 threads), others defaults (I suppose properly).
Q6600, CB UCI, WinXP

Any results:
(polish, Q=H, R=W, B=G, N=S)

Properly, best move is 1.(H)Qf7

Results reveal by me any fundamental mistake in Stockfish. The question is for me, if Stockfish will solve this test as well as Houdini and Rybka will be Stockfish better or worse than now?!

For me, Stockfish solves all of the problems very quickly (WELL under the 15 minute limit) except for these three:

While e5 probably does win, Re1, Qd1 and h6 also win, with Re1 being dominatingly better (deep search score of 565 for Re1, 376 for Qd1, 339 for h6 and 387 for e5.)"; c3 "e5"; cce 0; ce 558; id "bt2630.28"; pm Re1; pv Re1 Bb7 Qf4 Bd4 Nc7+ Kd8 Nxb5 Bf6 Bc7+ Ke8 e5 Bg2+ Kg1 Kf8 exf6;

And for those, the solution in the test set is probably wrong.

@user923005: "For me, Stockfish solves all of the problems very quickly (WELL under the 15 minute limit) except for ..." - give analizyzes with a few engines for comparing (with no4 obviously!) and for prove it !!!

Important for me in this thread is comparison to Stockfish, will be well to take analyzes of the same problem by other chess engines!

Weak points in Stockfish to other chess engines can take the field to improve Stockfish, which is even with these weak points so good! With question at the beginning if will be Stockfish after improve better? However, I have not noticed any big weaknesses Houdini and Rybka to Stockfish, but the differences are of course! I know too BS2820 test positions and tested them, now I cannot find them! :yell:

Strange and characteristic of Stockfish is also a wide scatter of times solve the task, unusual or much lower in other chess engines! In any analyzes BT2630-04 Stockfish gives solution Qf7 early, but in second move, what is rather not properly!

This stockfish solves it instantly because I have analyzed it before.

You performanced Stockfish time as 43 seconds and further wrote "solves it instantly" (??). You could cutted any analize lines - it is too long!

I tend to analyze at very long time control.
E.g. one hour per position, one day per position.
For me, fast analysis of chess positions is ten minutes, and quick review is 5 minutes.
For special purposes, I analyze faster, but I would never use that analysis to make a chess decision.
43 seconds is fast enough for anything that I will ever do.

The bt 2630 instructions say to give the positions 15 minutes.  43 seconds is a lot faster than that (about 21x).
In other words, all strong modern chess engines solve that position under the stated requirements.

I know 20 years about time control 15 minutes for every test position !

I wrote in thread about Stockfish comparison to other engines!!! Time Stockfish is much longer than time others engines, how I performanced and blitz game like this rather will be lost by Stockfish!
Parent - By user923005 (****) [us] Date 2014-06-12 19:13
If you take the time to solution for a 100 problem difficult test set, how does stockfish do, compared to other engines?

More importantly, if you take 100 quiet moves and let stockfish think for one minute each and compare it to other engines, which engines come to the best decisions fastest?  After all, most moves are quiet moves because after 31 captures the game is over or drawn.

In comparison to other engines, Stockfish is superior.
There will be, of course, some positions where other engines solve faster.
My experience is that Stockfish will take a long time to solve some simple poison pawn problems, especially when it takes a long time to lose the bishop.
Even so, I trust the analysis of stockfish for any position unless I see a better evaluation by another engine.

Stockfish is not an inferior problem solver.  Now, if you have a big pile of difficul tactical problems, especially problems involving sacrifice, then feed them to Houdini Tactical.  Such problems are fairly rare in real games and engines that solve them quickly will not fare so well in real games as engines which are not honed to solve these sorts of problems.

If you honed Stockfish to be the fastest sacrifice solver, then it would lose strength in game play.

Hence, what you saw was the strength of stockfish, not the weakness.  If other programs solve it faster, it is probably an indication of why they are weaker.

Did you look carefully at this position?
The rook is under threat.  The best move involves not saving the rook, but instead throwing away your queen.

Hence, in order to make the best move, the "bad looking" moves that are pruned by null move heuristic (and other pruning methods, for that matter) must be examined sooner.
Because Stockfish does null move pruning very aggressively, it is not at all surprising that Stockfish can take longer than some other engines.
I did not try it, but I guess that Houdini tactical will solve it very fast.
But Houdini tactical is not as strong as Houdini.  See:
http://computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/rating_list_all.html
which has this:
  Houdini 4 64-bit 4CPU  3274  +18  -17  66.2%  -103.0  47.9%  1032
   Houdini 4 Tactical 64-bit 4CPU  3248  +25  -25  65.6%  -95.4  51.7%  470

The very thing that makes Stockfish take longer to see the best solution is probably also the very thing that makes Stockfish stronger than the other engines:
Extremely aggressive pruning of bad looking moves.
It's not a defect.  It's a feature.

Hence, my advice is to use Stockfish analysis to make chess decisions.  But if a chess position is very important to you, also analyze with other strong engines.

IMO-YMMV

My hot comment for performanced analizys (thanks for them!):

This position, although is only one, shows however the weakness of Stockfish, even programs much older and weaker solved the task faster than Stock!
If long analize this position is a feature, not bother winning direct duels, whether change settings Stock. for faster solving this position make Stock. worse or better to compete with other engines? I asked about it at the beginning!

This position does not demonstrate any weakness of stockfish.
It demonstrates a strength of stockfish.
Once in a great while, a strength can cause a problem.  This is one of those times.  The problem is a tiny one because waiting less than one minute solves the problem, if you have fast enough hardware.

Most chess moves do not require sacrificing brilliancy.  So, an engine like Stockfish will not make the Morphy move in the blink of an eye.  But it will make the  Botvinnik move long before the others.  That is why it wins.
I prefer winning to pretty, though truth be told, I would prefer to win beautifully.

"It demonstrates a strength of stockfish" - It is curious to state that after bad results of Stockfish to others engines, even much worse as evidence "a strength"! You don't understand that I wrote not about generally speed solving of Stock. but about compare to others engines - I must still repeat it and you still don't understand it!!!
I'm not going to talk with anyone about my opinion that results of test BT2630-04 performanced evidence weakness of Stockfish to others engines!

My question about influence any patch, improving of Stockfish on the overall playing strength is not a questionnaire or plebiscite, although everybody can submit opinion!
I can be convince only by concrete test with new code of Stockfish or opinion M.Costalba or J.Kiinsky ... but they rather will not answer for my question!

Stockfish prunes out dumb looking moves.
At first glance, the queen move is dumb looking.
In under a minute on decent hardware, stockfish will solve the problem. I see no issue.

On the other hand, given a million random chess positions to analyze, stockfish will produce more correct answers as to the best thing to do than any other engine.
This is intrinsically obvious due to the results from game play (where, after all, stockfish has been given a million chess positions and made better choices than any other chess engine).

I think that I understand your reluctance, but I also think that you do not understand what I am saying.  Perhaps there is a language barrier issue.

>(WELL under the 15 minute limit)

The epd file is on my June 1998 Rebel 10 disk and I believe the test set dates back earlier and was for dedicated machines when the top machines were still competitive with PC's. Even so, 15 minutes on a 1998 machine would be equivalent to what today? A minute at the most? That's being generous too!

Stockfish is undoubtedly the current best game playing engine but for established test sets it does not look so good when Houdini 4 weighs in well above Stockfish suggesting that Houdini 4 may still be the best analysis engine.

Stockfish is strongest, with very little doubt:
http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/rating_list_all.html
http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404/
http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/40_40%20Rating%20List/40_40%20All%20Versions/rangliste.html
http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/40_4_Ratinglist/40_4_BestVersion/rangliste.html

If it plays better moves, then it is the best analysis engine in general.  If the other engines analyze better, then they will also play better.  The problem is, you do not know in advance, which positions another engine will be superior.
Hence, if there is a position that you really care about, I would suggest analysis using:
1. Stockfish (latest and greatest, hot from the build version download site)
2. Komodo 7.0a
3. Houdini 4.0
4. Houdini 4.0 tactical

To me, it is like this:
You can get advice from:
Capablanca
Fischer
Kasparov
Anand

Personally, I will listen to them all.
I am really not sure which of that group of super GMs is strongest.  But if there was a sure winner, the others can still offer insight.

Similarly, Stockfish is "the smartest chess engine in the world" in the way that matters most.  It makes more good decisions that lead to won games than the other engines.  Hence, its analysis is the best for most positions.
On the other hand, every single engine will have some positions that give it trouble.  That includes stockfish.

As to the 15 minute limit, that is the stated condition to run the test.  I guess that in today's hardware and software, it is just a few seconds.
My personal opinion:
If you can't wait one minute to find the right answer to a chess position, then you shouldn't be playing chess.
IMO-YMMV

> If it plays better moves, then it is the best analysis engine in general. If the other engines analyze better, then they will also play better.

I can find no evidence to support that. What makes Stockfish so good a game playing engine contributes to a degree to its Achilles heal for analysis. It will sometimes completely miss a key move but this is not so important in games where an OK move will suffice and it may find something better later on. The cause is the heavy pruning and consequently as shown in many of the examples here it misses the key move that some older engines may find in a fraction of a second. A good game playing engine does not necessarily make a good analysis engine.

An interesting Zugzswang themed position at http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=274 also exposes insufficient knowledge here when with the exception of Houdini 4, everything else I have fails to solve.

Blockade positions seem to be only within the capability of Shredder 9 onwards.

Stockfish King Safety prevents finding key moves such as in BS2830 Pos 15 for example when the majority of other engines solve very quickly.

GM Dr. John Nunn was the problem solving King for some time, maybe still is, but he was nowhere near the best game player.

Stockfish performance in the established position test sets is still someway behind Houdini 4 so it is reasonable to conclude that what it may lack in the analysis area does not detract from its game playing strength.

Engine versus engine games provide much fun but for overall analysis Houdini 4 + at least one other is essential. I give 4 minutes per position for engines to solve that was related to a realistic time for a middle game move in the time control I used to play. In practice, 1 minute with a modern engine on today's hardware will see much deeper than most of us would likely get to in any game.

Also remember that the amount of hash given to an engine will also impact on performance. Stockfish 5 seems better overall with maximum 16Gb hash but Houdini gives better results with 8 Gb. Worse with 16 Gb and definitely don't bother with 32 Gb hash. In the latter case it takes some 7 to 8 seconds to initialise.

Just checking back on my results that show Stockfish 3 JA 2Gb was the best Stockfish solving engine albeit not all hash combinations were tried. Houdini 4, 8Gb LP still retains the crown for WM100 with 92/100. Still to run Stockfish 5 in WM100 but will have to wait until weather cools some.

> Stockfish is "the smartest chess engine in the world" in the way that matters most. It makes more good decisions that lead to won games than the other engines. Hence, its analysis is the best for most positions.

You surprise me, surely what matters most for humans is the best analysis engine not the engine that wins against other engines. Test results show its analysis is definitely not best overall in positions from human games.

The original post queried why the World's strongest game playing engine missed/takes so long over BT2630 position 4. The reasons are above and I concur with his observations.

>> If it plays better moves, then it is the best analysis engine in general. If the other engines analyze better, then they will also play better.
>I can find no evidence to support that.

At very fast time control, at fast time control, and at slow time control Stockfish beats all the other engines in strength.
In order to beat the other engines, it must make better decisions about moves.
Every game is a collection of chess positions, and for each chess position Stockfish must decide which move is best.
Since the decisions of Stockfish lead to won games, the decisions are better.

>What makes Stockfish so good a game playing engine contributes to a degree to its Achilles heal for analysis. It will sometimes completely miss a key move but this is not so important in games where an OK move will suffice and it may find something better later on.

Every engine will sometimes miss a key move.  However, for the broad majority of moves, Stockfish makes better choices.

>The cause is the heavy pruning and consequently as shown in many of the examples here it misses the key move that some older engines may find in a fraction of a second. A good game playing engine does not necessarily make a good analysis engine.

And it is also the reason that Stockfish makes brilliant moves that none of the other engines see.  Stockfish sees more deeply than Houdini.  Stockfish sees more deeply than Komodo.

>An interesting Zugzswang themed position at http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=274 also exposes insufficient knowledge here when with the exception of Houdini 4, everything else I have fails to solve.

Yes, Zugswang positions are harder for Stockfish due to deeper pruning.  Hence, if a move involves significant sacrifice or if the board is nearly bare, it would be wise to use other engines as well.

>Blockade positions seem to be only within the capability of Shredder 9 onwards.

Very few engines can make good blockade decisions, but they are getting better at it.
You may have noticed that the latest Stockfish engine can find fortresses.

>Stockfish King Safety prevents finding key moves such as in BS2830 Pos 15 for example when the majority of other engines solve very quickly.

And yet Stockfish solves it quite quickly on my hardware.  So it is not really a problem unless you have to go to the bathroom really badly and you need the decision before you run off.

>GM Dr. John Nunn was the problem solving King for some time, maybe still is, but he was nowhere near the best game player.

And whose analysis would you prefer for game play, that of Kasparov or Nunn?
Solving a tactical problem happens quite rarely compared to the quiet moves.  And Stockfish will solve the tactical problems, though you might have to wait a bit longer for some of them.

>Stockfish performance in the established position test sets is still someway behind Houdini 4 so it is reasonable to conclude that what it may lack in the analysis area does not detract from its game playing strength.

Analysis and tactical performance are not coupled in that way for me.  I want the best advice for an arbitrary position from a game, not some cooked up tactical problem or freak position that occurs once in a hundred games.

>Engine versus engine games provide much fun but for overall analysis Houdini 4 + at least one other is essential. I also use Houdini and I like it.  I see no controversy there.  I also use Komodo regularly.

>Also remember that the amount of hash given to an engine will also impact on performance. Stockfish 5 seems better overall with maximum 16Gb hash but Houdini gives better results with 8 Gb. What matters for analysis is the average answer to a list of arbitrary positions is better for engine A than for engine B.  That makes engine A's analysis better.  At least as far as I am concerned.

>The original post queried why the World's strongest game playing engine missed/takes so long over BT2630 position 4. The reasons are above and I concur with his observations.

Stockfish solves that problem quickly enough for any reasonable person.

I think Houdini looks more deeply than Rybka?

How about Houdini vs Komodo?
Parent - By user923005 (****) [us] Date 2014-06-17 18:04
Houdini and Komodo are about the same, but I think that Komodo scales better so that on very high end hardware at long time control Komodo will do better.  I did not test this myself so I am only going on some contests that I have seen and extrapolating.

Houdini and Komodo have a different perspective than Stockfish and that is what makes them valuable to me.

" Stockfish results for the Bednorz-Tönissen-BT2630-04 test are very surprising ??!! to minus...Stockfish, the best engine on the world, solved this task worse than even the old Shredder9 and Junior10 and much worse than DR3, H1.5, DF11, DH12:

No 04 - Bt2630, times:
Stockfish 4:                     02:11,
Stockfish DD:                   05:49, 01:43

Houdini 1.5:                     00:04
Deep Rybka 3:                  00:02

Junior 10.1:                      00:36
Shredder 9:                      01:06, 01:07

I was testing 32-bit versions Stockfish and my others legally engines, including old Junior 10.1 and Shredder 9.
Stockfish settings are suitable for 4 cores Q6600 (4 threads), others defaults (I suppose properly).
Q6600, CB UCI, WinXP

Any results:
(polish, Q=H, R=W, B=G, N=S)

Properly, best move is 1.(H)Qf7 "

Now, after about 2,5 y., short 3 analysis by Stockfish 8, Qf7 :

(1) 1:13
(2) 0:23
(3) 0:26
Conditions are the same like earlier.

Results S8 are a bit better, but after small number of probes. Still engines like Houdini and even old version Fritz etc. are  much better than S8 !!! It is only one test position, but it is enough for me and I prefer and trust much more Houdini to any anlyze chess problem and do not trust Stockfish !!!

If you do this:

Results S8 are a bit better, but after small number of probes. Still engines like Houdini and even old version Fritz etc. are  much better than S8 !!! It is only one test position, but it is enough for me and I prefer and trust much more Houdini to any anlyze chess problem and do not trust Stockfish !!!

Then you will be using analysis that is weaker, especially if you use Fritz instead of SF.

That is a queen sacrificing zugzwang type position.
How often do you think those come up in real games?
Most chess positions in real games are quiet positions that do not even involve a capture or promotion.

Not only that, but on decent hardware SF gets the right answer for this problem fairly quickly anyway.

Now, if you have a tactical position, then Houdini is an excellent choice.
But for general purpose analysis, it is not quite as good as Stockfish.
Komodo is close to those two, but a wee bit further behind.

If you have three computers, why not run all three at the same time, and see what appeals to you?

The reason SF takes longer is that SF trims the depth for stupid looking moves, just like humans do.  But eventually it will find the right move anyway, in most cases.
In trimming off the depth for wild looking sacrifices, it allows it to see much deeper in normal looking positions.  That is where most of the game of chess takes place.  And that is why SF wins more games than any other program right now.

For BT2630, these three problems have wrong solutions (probably some people already know this):

H2:  00:00:02, 00:00:04, 00:00:03, 00:00:04, 00:00:02, 00:00:03, aver. 00:03, range 2x

Stockfish apart the long time for solution of topic position also has a large spread of results (5x), it is also defect Stockfish that is has not Houdini (ab.2x, short time difficult to compare!) !!

I'm not interested in above "explanations", arguments are known me, important is only effect! I know too wrong earlier solutions in BT2630 test, I tested them for 20 years!! It is possible that soon better hardware will cover the obviously defects of Stockfish! Now fanatical adherents do not want to see defects of Stockfish, but I am obviously too, like many people thankful for the free very strong chess engine!

Although in direct duels Stockfish is much better than Houdini (TCEC), I do not know chess positions where analyse Houdini is much worse than Stockfish ?? Reverse situation obviously exists !!

If stockfish beats Houdini head to head, then which engine makes better chess decisions on average? Take as long as you like.

Test positions in EPD test sets usually involve something unusual like a sacrifice.

Now, Houdini is clearly better at those sorts of positions.

If you use your chess engine strictly for analyzing EPD test suites then Houdini is the optimal choice.  But if you want to analyze your own games or someone else's games, then Stockfish is better. Even better is to analyze with several strong engines. Up to you of course.

It is possible that soon better hardware will cover the obviously defects of Stockfish!

Hmmm ...

So, now variety of candidate moves you call as defect.
As i know only Stockfish  that look up other candidate moves so good.
As i know only Stockfish that show to you long term plans. (for example Frankenstein - Dracula gambit)
Of course that takes more time to decide between two or more moves.
If it is defect, OK, up to you.
For me that helps only to make a right game-plan.
