Werewolf (Carl Bicknell) has created video tutorials to assist Aquarium users in learning how to use this powerful tool. The first video follows and more videos will be posted in the coming weeks.

Note that the videos are aimed at beginners although most Aquarium users will probably enjoy watching them!

Introduction to IDeA
The benefits of using IDeA in Aquarium. This is the first in a series of videos on IDeA in Aquarium.

Maybe make this sticky, so it would be easier accessible to the new users once the thread gets old?!

PS: Great idea with the videos for beginners, well done Carl!

Thanks. It's now a sticky.

Thank you for the video - we really need these to get more people using Aquarium.

Will you be using AQ2014 for future tutorials?

Thanks again

Shaun

Yes. I can't remember if the next vid has Aquarium 2014, but certainly the one after does.

Native english speakers are best... Its not pleasing to hear very harsh accent (like mine for example). Its a distraction.

Very nice video WereWolf

A new video has been added: setting up an IDeA Project.

Enjoy.

EDIT: In the bottom right hand corner when you play there is a settings button. Change it to high-def and you'll find it much easier to see the mouse etc.

Hi,

Is there a link thanks

IDeA Engine Setup

The second video tutorial on IDeA.

Learn how to setup an engine so it's ready to be used in IDeA and also how to create an IDeA project from scratch.

Note: In the bottom right hand corner when you play there is a settings button. Change it to high-def and you'll find it much easier to see the mouse etc.

Seeding an IDeA Project Manually

Learn how to seed your IDeA project manually. This is the first of three videos describing different methods of seeding IDeA, i.e. manually adding analysis tasks to the IDeA queue. The 'I' in IDeA stand for 'Interactive' and interactivity is what IDeA is all about!

Remember to set the video resolution to MAX so you can see the mouse etc!

Seeding an IDeA project with positions from a database

You can search a database for a position you are analyzing and seed IDeA with moves from actual games. By selecting the games carefully, you can ensure that you populate the tree with sensible moves. Most user will use an Aquarium database for this purpose, but you can also use databases stored in a different system.

Hi,

I would just like to say these are brilliant videos!

Many thanks Carl for taking the time they are a huge help.

And a huge thanks to  Dadi Jonsson as well he helps many of us in here.

Seeding an IDeA Project using an Engine

The third method of creating interesting positions for IDeA projects is by using infinite analysis and sending the lines (PVs) generated by the chess engine to the IDeA project for analysis. You can use any engine you like. Aquarium will automatically send the positions to IDeA. No need to copy/paste or write down the variations and reenter them in IDeA!

Thanks, Carl. These are great! I wonder, though, how did you figure all this out for yourself so you could show us?
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) [gb] Date 2014-03-21 16:53
I read Dadi's tutorials and I had LOTS of trial and error!
Parent - By kblaine (**) Date 2014-03-21 16:57
I read those, too but I guess my trial and error was not nearly as successful.
Parent - By cma6 (****) Date 2016-02-01 02:48
Carl, why are you doing your infinite analysis in Sandbox rather than in the Database window?
Parent - By xxxpipxxx [gb] Date 2014-04-08 17:49
Absolutely superb thank you

Parallel Search and IDeA
Why is it more efficient to run several single-core engines in IDeA rather than one multi-core engine? And why does Carl takes you on a treasure hunt on a deserted island to explain the difference? I think everyone will enjoy this video that explains one of the mysteries of IDeA. I certainly enjoyed it!

First of all thanks for the very instructive videos
Highly appreciated!!!

One minor question: there are processors from intel with 4 cores and hypertreading.
The windows taks manager then shows 8 cores. Can the ratio of 1,7 increase in efficiency while doubling the number of cores also be used in the case of hypertreading?
In that case on a 4 core processor with hypertreading one should create 7 (one spare for other computer work) or 8 instances of the engine in Idea.

As sad: it is no big deal, im just curious.
My guess would be that hypertreading also has 'communication issues'. So for each core with hypertreading one should create 2 instances of the engine to be used.
Is this right?

with regards

DvD

I'll deal with this in the next video.

Thanks for asking!

Also I would be interested in what is your take on the IDeA setting of minimum depth and minimum time

I'll cover this. Thanks.

Running 8 single cores at 60% is 20% gain than running 4 single cores at 100%.
Parent - - By ernest (****) [fr] Date 2014-05-09 18:58 Edited 2014-05-09 19:01
%CPU-wise you are correct, but all things being equal, 8CPU are more wasteful of nodes than 4CPU.

So I would say that the +20% are not useful.

Is this true ? can u confirm it ?

Hyperthreading and Idea was a topic some time ago.
http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?pid=227358;hl=Hyperthreading

It is tempting to use HT in IdEA, cause we employ single core engines, but it may be too much overhead by coordination of the threads, which kills performance?

Kind regards,
max

Perhaps there is an assumption you made that is incorrect. It is my understanding that an i7 processor employs 4 physical cores but only 3 virtual, not 4. Therefore you should use 7 as the multiplier, not 8. That would be only a 5% gain. The i5 has 3 cores plus 2 virtual.

It's not an assumption, I've owned and tested these CPUs

There's a new video out. It's about which IDeA engine to use in IdeA vs Sandbox. I have another short video on the way about time settings and then after that something really exciting on Tree Utilities.

Which IDeA engine to use in IDeA vs IA (in Sandbox or database game)?
Many new IDeA users wonder which engine they should use as their IDeA engine. Carl discusses that question in this video and also which engine(s) might be suitable for infinite analysis in linked IDeA games (in the Sandbox or a database game).

Parent - - By OempaS (**) Date 2014-11-16 08:58
These video's are a great initiative. Keep going Carl!

Now question arises: what to do after you learned that al your (master)trees have been constructed NOT using the strongest engine..
Start all over again.. Or is there a simple way to recalculate trees with another (stronger) engine? If yes, how?
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) [gb] Date 2014-11-16 11:03
It's almost like you're reading my mind! This will be dealt with not in the next video but the one after that.
