Well, all the post-mortems for the World Championship last November have been written - not much to add. This win by Carlsen finally clears the way for the new generation of great chess players. I do not think Anand was a solid champion while he held the title. In fact, I could not help but feel that Kasparov was still the best in the world even without the title. With Magnus Carlsen, I can be confident that Kasparov now truly belongs to be counted among the great old masters without nagging the current hegemony. The emergence of Sergey Karjakin will make for some interesting battles in future World Championships as he himself is the other prodigy on the march of Carlsen's generation.

In this age of the chess engine, the human champion still means something. Perhaps more - now that the likes of Anand and Kramnik are in the rear view mirror. No disrespect to these great players, but they were lacking a freshness the human game needed -at least as far as world championships go.
