Until now, 287 voters have participated in a poll I set up, and only posted about it in two message boards which are not engine specific :-) (CSS/CCC). I don't expect many more votes or big changes. The question was for the Engine of the Year, by whatever criteria a voter wants to apply.

Rybka 88 (31%)
Zappa 62 (22%)
Fritz 44 (15%)

Congratulations. - From freeware engines, Glaurung received most votes (4th/10%). The last choice, "eine andere" means another one than the 11 major engines offered to vote for (3%).

Some days ago I would have been very happy with this result, but after the discussion with turbojuice, I don't think that Rybka deserves this award. That would have meant that Rybka got the Engine of the Year 2006 and probably 2005 too, so if it remains on top, two more years and wins Engine of the Year 2008 and 2009, then the award becomes pointless (because everyone knows that Rybka is going to win it) and seems like a farce.

If Rybka does not deserves this award then, who more deserves it?

Naum and Fritz both had gigantic elo improvements throughout the year; Rybka's top place in the rating lists is mainly because it should have won the award in 2005 and 2006.  There is also something to be said of Zappa winning the match, which is a different criterion than overall improvement, but most of the work that went into that was in previous years, too.

Anyway, hopefully Rybka will be a clear winner in 2008, with both the highest rating and biggest improvements.  I think highest rating should probably count for something, but should certainly not be the main criterion for voting.  Anyway, it was a good poll, though.

I think there are some points why Rybka deserves this award:
a) Rybka is the strongest engine
b) Rybka played the handicap matches against Ehlvest and Benjamin quite successful
c) Rybka - Zappa match (ok, she lost, but the money came afaik from Convekta so indirectly from Rybka, so at least this support of computer chess should be honored :) )
d) This forum. The relatively close contact between the users and the Rybka development team is a really good thing.
e) Rybka participated in a lot of computer chess torunaments and won all of them in 2007

I think these are good arguments for the award.  My point is that much of the discussion focusing on this has centered upon the highest rating argument, while you have given five completely different, valid reasons.

Very well said Felix. I specially likes points (a) and (e).

If Zappa Mexico is really the strongest chess entity on earth, with long time controls and +32 cores, I'd give it the award. (After all, it's not its fault that very few people can have these 32 core machines.)
