I know that something like this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any clear answers in the threads I looked through.
I am an otb player and I am looking for a good opening book, preferably in tree format. Ideally, it should be comprehensive (i.e., cover more or less the whole range of chess openings) and be based on both human and engine games. Commercial books are okay for me, too.
I thought Jiri Dufek's Rybka book was excellent, but unfortunately, it is a bit dated now. If there was an updated version of it, or something like it, I would be happy to buy it.
I am aware that the best books are private etc., but since I am a modest person, I would be satisfied with the best book I can get legally and for a reasonable price.
Thanks in advance!

Italians...Freestylers...opening books...

and if you had looked at the user name " Id 241018" who is posting messages here, which corresponds to my number on ICCF, you would smell me even more.
But I have nothing to do with him/them, I don't even know his/their real name/s. It seems to me he/they want/s to make people believe that I am taking part in this, also using the words "freestyle and correspondence" on his/their site. Moreover, he/they are probably also "usurping" a friend of mine, Mauro Petrolo, a 3 times Italian Corr. Champion like me. The nick W32Blaster on playchess has that name on his picture. As he (the real Mauro Petrolo) is very busy right now, I don't really think it's him playing on playchess. I will ask him though, as I want to be sure. I don't think he will be happy to know that they are using his name.
To finish all these coincidences, Sir Black King, (which is the second playchess nick of W32Blaster) who is probably the nick "Id 241018" here, up to a few days ago had my town in his notes, Lucca. I doubt he lives in my same little city, even if I wish he would, so I could go give a punch on the nose of the little usurper!

Several possible explanations, but three main ones:

a.  a devious person with extensive Italian-specific computer chess knowledge is trying to con people
b.  you are lying
c.  you are a schizophrenic and one of your multiple personalities is running wild

I am inclined to believe c).  Alan, I suspect, would go with b).

Please look at this person's previous posts, particularly the one from 12/13.  He signs off with "E.G.R."  Now, I don't know if G is your middle initial or not.  I suspect very few, if any, people in computer chess would know this.  But apparently this entity does know it.  Now, imagine the level of obsession that would be needed for someone other than yourself to drop a clue like that deliberately.  Imagine the level of advance planning needed to leave this trail of bread crumbs stretching back weeks.  Let your mind marinate on these points.

This is so funny. Bookmakers seem to be a very peculiar breed even among computer chess enthusiasts. (I recall that there has been a lot of drama on this subforum in the past.)

By the way, I would love to learn about the story behind your and Alan's feud with Eros. From his posts on this forum, he doesn't appear to be that evil.
Parent - - By Nelson Hernandez (Gold) [us] Date 2013-12-25 14:17
I wouldn't call it a feud.  In Alan's case I would say it is principally a grudging, backhanded compliment at the extreme, ethically-challenged measures Eros undertakes to win, and to a lesser degree the poor record he has had against him in Freestyle.  In my case it is that to a lesser degree, and more related to memories of negotiations we had related to game databases where he pulled clever legalisms to deprive me of the main object of the negotiation after I had delivered my end of the deal.  However I can't complain, in more recent years he was very generous and made good on all my past frustrations.
Parent - - By Kappatoo (*****) [de] Date 2013-12-25 16:48
I see. Since he seems to regret his past behavior, and since it's Christmas, this is the perfect occasion for a great reconciliation, wouldn't you agree?

By the way, do you happen to know a good and available opening book? :)
Parent - By Nelson Hernandez (Gold) [us] Date 2013-12-25 22:46 Edited 2013-12-25 22:52
Reconciliation?  No.  Peaceful coexistence, yes.

I don't bother with other people's books so I'm the wrong guy to ask.

Yes, very true! I did my masters project with a guy who had similar skills and he made over $130 million dollars selling stock in his worthless dot com company to people who thought they were investing. I was very impressed! Eros also impresses me with his desire to win in any way possible, although I am puzzled that he didn't apply this talent to something more useful than chess, such as making money or chasing women.

and to a lesser degree the poor record he has had against him in Freestyle.

:surprised: To the best of my knowledge, I have played Eros only twice in 'official' freestyle games. I won the first game and he won the second. This isn't really a poor record against Eros. If you want to see an example of a poor record, check out my games against Vas (0-4). Some people have even insinuated that I was 'on his team'! :red: It's not true, but nobody did more for Vas' freestyle career than I did!

It seems this guy is an even more machiavellian devil than I was in my "gold" times, before getting caught by a quite big depression, which lasted quite a lot.
After I got this depression, (during which I did some crazy things, as Nelson knows) I lost my "bastardness" that Nelson liked so much. Now I feel quite better, but I don't think I will ever be "the butcher" (still using Nelson's words) that I was before.
I saw the posts of this mysterious "my iccf's number's" nick (funny how in his first post he asks if someone knows about the taipan engine, as it is the rename he gave to the engine he is playing with himself on playchess). In another he asks if people know about his book, the aspides book, of course not specifying that it's his book. So now I think it's not a team, but just one person.
I don't know what he meant adding the G in the middle of the E and The R. That letter says nothing to me. Or I don't remember, it may well be that this mysterious guy knows more of me than even myself. Scary, isn't it?

We operate in a milieu infested with individuals suffering from the full range of behavioral pathologies.  If you were to seize the 200 most active people in computer chess (measured by hours per day engaged in the hobby) and bundle them all off to some gloomy institution you would have the makings of a really proper insane asylum.  Before long there would be assaults, murders and all kinds of aberrant incidents.  So don't think your depression episode was all that unusual; really, what you experienced ought to be categorized as a full-blown syndrome.  The only known cure is to abandon chess in all forms, which I strongly encourage you to do.

I don't think I've seen a truer statement all year.

I sure remember your post where you explained the risks of many years of chess playing. After more than 20 years of continuous chess, (of which almost 15 of computer chess) a strong depression was the least that could happen to me :-)

I tried many times to escape this chess drug, with no success.

At least you gained so much success in your craft. Do you think it's worth it? btw, it's nice to see you posting again.

thanks, my success maybe avoided me suicide, but for sure it didn't make my life happy.
I am posting again... I noticed that this mostly happens when Nelson mentions me for some reason
He has the power to awaken the undeads!
then, after I post, replying Nelson's posts, Alan, the lost soul, also always appears....

Has there been any harm done to you by his behavior? And do you have any evidence that there is something wrong with his opening book or that his intentions are malicious?
By the way, I don't want to spread any rumors, but there used to be this quite controversial Italian bookmaker on this forum, do you have any connections to him?
Parent - - By Auryn (***) [it] Date 2013-12-25 17:15
No Harm, and I don't think he has evil things in mind, he's probably just trying to use my name to his advantage for selling his book. As I don't sell books, he's not "stealing" my buyers.
As I said, I don't know him. Someone though may know him on other forums with the name of "Teretola" or something similar. I think they are the same person, and I heard he did some bad things like distributing commercial engines for free. Anyway this is only what I heard and what I think, so I can't confirm for sure what I am saying, as I didn't investigate this matter and don't really care.

I should not allow myself to be drawn further into this farce, but let me get this straight.

1.  You are Eros Giovanni Riccio of Lucca, Italy.  There is another Eros Riccio of Lucca, Italy also known in computer circles by his nick Auryn, but this man is not you and you have never met him or spoken to him.  (Note to readers, Lucca has a population of about 87,000 according to Wiki.)

2.  You are a computer chess aficionado, promoting an engine and a top-grade opening book, citing correspondence and Freestyle experience.  Coincidentally, the other Eros Riccio whom you have never met or spoken to has the exact same hobby, is a world-class bookmaker, is a champion correspondence player and Freestyler.

Surely, as a reasonable man, you must realize that both of these propositions are absolutely preposterous?  It seems like it would be very easy for you to look up the "other" Eros and arrange an introduction, so he may have the opportunity to punch you in the nose, as he suggested he would do if he could?  Piazza Napoleone might be a good place for this meeting.

I can assure you that in Lucca is not no Eros Giovanni Riccio, but only Eros Riccio was born December 1, 1977

I would go with:

d. Eros has a chess groupie!

Groupies are fine when they are of the female persuasion, young and good looking. Chess groupies are not nearly as desirable, and the best course of action probably includes sleeping with a loaded handgun under the pillow...
