I have an old Pentium 4@3.06ghz w/hyperthreading. It is a single core but has 2 logical processors within one. Will I be able to use the multi-processor version of rybka?

hi spongebob,

Well, you and I have something in common-the same processor-no go bro- your dead in the water- forever left to dream about the big boys and what they can do with their quad wads.

Sure. But unless you set it to only use one thread, it'll be 15% slower than the single-processor version. Hyperthreading is worse than useless for chess.

hi Vempele,

That is absolutely correct- So, spongebob- how comfortable are you in going into CMOS- Where the boogeyman lives? Consult your Manual! Find the " Disable " for Hyperthreading. Get the hell out of there without messing with anything else-leave with accepting changes. Unless, of course you are a pro. Then Boogie on.

I also have a Pentium 4 3Ghz HT. Well, I have made to play different games among the version single core of Rybka and the version MP. The version single core has gotten a  positive result, clearly winning.
Hourly I have seen, from the notes of the games, that Rybka MP on the Pentium 4 HT, arrives it always has a depth of analysis, inferior of a movement to the version single core. (if single core 14 move of depth , MP version 13 . If single core 16 move depth,
MP version 15 ecc..)
Also in playchess.com, the version MP has gotten inferior results to that signle core.
For which I advise you, if you keep on using a Pentium 4 HT, to use the version single core of Rybka .
I also advise you to make overckloc of your mainboard, using the program "ClockGen." I habitually push my CPU to 3,7 Ghzes, without problems.
But you will never be able however to be competitive, towards the Quads Core.
(curiosity: playing with Zappa Mexico x64, if we plan the parameters of the program:  threads = 2, the engine jams - crash.)
