What does Profiled in the filename mean?

A first compilation which enable recording of function usages. Then launch the official bench.
Second compilation that take care of these informations to reorder or better optimise the final executable.

And still I don't understand a word. Would you please come down from the Heaven and explain to us mortals, what .exe should be used with what processor? And, as I said, thank you, and great work, keep it up!

Hello Higgs,

My son is the first french man to be call Prakash in memory of this small paradise.

??? :confused::confused::confused:
Parent - - By Maxou93 (**) Date 2013-12-04 18:07
Yes sir,at that time it was like this ! When I went to the office to say that i wanted to call my son Prakash, just after he was born, they said to me than this name wasn't in the calendar, as any saint for instance. By the way i'd to discuss a long time and negociate with them to make them admit that this name could be accepted by the french autority. This is the meaning of what I wrote before. Hope it help you to better understand.
Regards

Well, Prakash is a hindi/Sanskrit name and it means light. And My Name is Om Prakash!

"Om" is a sacred word whose chanting relieves one from all stress. It means welcome to god.
Om will make a good name of engine.

But OM = Opening Master
Parent - - By Maxou93 (**) Date 2013-12-06 22:48
OK sir, I knew that. But when i gave this name to my son, I did ignore every meaning of this name. In fact I couldn't imagine than a meaning could be attached because this is not so current in France. We mainly have name from saint or the bible, but not significant like it is in other cultures. 6 month after my son was born, I discovered that "Prakash" can be associate with lightning, light and sun. An indie guy said that to me. By the way, I was curious to ask him if the main name of my son, which is german ( jung ) had also any significant point. And he responded than there is a word in Indie which is almost like this. He spell "Jong" and he said that this word mean "war". Scary isn't ? Because "lightning war" is something we well earded about during German invasion troups !!
But, my first intention was just to find a music like prononciation to call my son. That was my only one idea !
After all he is a cool person, it's enought for me !
Regards
Parent - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2013-12-07 00:36
Surely an Unique name. Prakash = light and u can attribute it to anything that is energy or even GOD.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2013-12-07 03:12
Blitzkrieg would certainly be a very unique name for a Frenchman!
Parent - By Maxou93 (**) Date 2013-12-07 11:38
Hahaha !!! You are absolutly right ! But if I choosed to call him like this, It gonna be very hard for him if he has to travel today, even in Germany. As french, I think that German peoples prefers to forget about that ! And my son have also German ancesters from his grand father !
This is bad days of old past, better to not resuscitate this terribles moments !
Peace and friendship, regards !

Nothing in readme?
Parent - - By Dragon Mist (****) Date 2013-12-01 19:31
I am trying to figure this out for some time, asking questions left and right. All I learned so far is that "profiled" are supposed to be better (not clear in what way) than those that are not "profiled".
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2013-12-01 20:59
PGO (i.e. Profile Guided Optimization) is used to rearrange the components of a program to increase execution speed. Most new compilers support this option, but it takes more work than a simple compile (i.e. one must run the application on representative input data, and collect performance statistics, which are then used to rearrange the components).
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) Date 2013-12-01 23:23 Edited 2013-12-01 23:26
Allen, with an I7-980 which of these compilations would be the best to run? At least in your opinion!
Thanks;
George
[edit] I don't understand the 481 and 473 mean.  Also haven't yet figured out what the percentage depicts!
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2013-12-02 00:46
George,

481 and 473 are the versions of GCC used for compilation. The percentage is the time used relative to stockfish-original.

The best is: stockfish_473_I7_POPCNT+Profiled. The newer GCC 4.8.1 is worse...

The fastest build is done using GCC 4.7.3 with POPCNT, Large Pages, and with PGO. According to the chart, it is 10% faster than the original Stockfish. It isn't clear what stockfish-original means in the chart. I'm not sure if that includes POPCNT and large pages or not.

Regards,
Alan

AVX_POPCNT+Profiled and POPCNT+Profiled win in every iteration, with not much difference between the 2. I guess it is safe to say that AVX_POPCNT+Profiled (Profiled meaning Large Pages and Syzygy) is the best to use (provided one has an adequate processor) as it means it is "most optimised" (for most instruction sets) version. I am delighted BTW to see Large Pages and Syzygy support, and just fail to understand why there is such a stubborn reluctance by leading SF programmers to include this 2 features in their work as standard and just go on from there. This way we have standard development version, Syzygy development version and this one, with LP, all requiring frequent merging with main branch.
PS stockfish-original probably means stockfish development version unchanged i.e. the way it's been published on development site. (Although one could now say which x64 version as there are a couple of them on the main site ... just to add more confusion).
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2013-12-02 12:06
I think all of these builds (with the possible exception of the one labeled original) use large pages and support Syzygy. I think profiled means use of PGO. Using profiled to mean uses large pages and supports Syzygy just doesn't make sense...
Parent - By Dragon Mist (****) Date 2013-12-02 16:53
You're probably right, I was trying to deduce from all the answers I got, and no matter how straight I ask questions, I never get clear answer (see above).

mini FAQ

Stockfish-original
It is the official stockfish build that could be downloaded at the mentionned date on abrok.eu under the link : "Windows x64 for modern computers + sse4.2", it is here for comparison purpose.

Profiled
Profiled DOESN'T mean Large Pages and Syzygy all version are base on the same SOURCE CODE. But not with the same compilation parameters.
As explained on forum, PGO (i.e. Profile Guided Optimization) is used to rearrange the components of a program to increase execution speed. Most new compilers support this option, but it takes more work than a simple compile (i.e. one must run the application on representative input data, and collect performance statistics, which are then used to rearrange the components).

What is the best version for me to use ?
Stockfish_473_I7_POPCNT+Profiled & stockfish_473_I7_AVX_POPCNT+Profiled are the best. If they crash you don't have the required hardware. So try the next one.
Sorry, no AMD CPU to test with.
The best method : launch tests\_test.bat and try to understand the results. Each test is done 10 times for better approximation.

I made some slight code modifications as I plan to run Noomen Test Suite. Which time control you suggest ?
and ... btw Rodrigues Island is Here
Parent - - By PCMorphy72 (**) Date 2013-12-07 12:21 Edited 2013-12-07 17:42
I suggest multiple time controls, e.g. :
1min + 0.1sec increment,
1min + 1.5sec increment (≈ 2min + 0.2sec increment, assuming games with ≈ 40 moves),
2min + 0.2sec increment,
3min + 1.5sec increment (≈ 4min + 0.4sec increment, assuming games with ≈ 40 moves),
4min + 0.4sec increment,
8min + 0.8sec increment.

You could be able to observe a sort of curve in the diminishing Elo gain, to extrapolate the behaviour for longer TC (or check the differences with e.g. 16min + 1.6sec).
