I am looking for annotated correspondence games to learn a bit
about the thought process of good players, especially with respect to
engine evaluations, something like "Houdini prefers the move 11.Ng5 is
+0,04 over 11.Be4 –0,04 but the bishop move gives White more chances
to attack the Black King...".

All I found is a Correspondence Chess Yearbook from 1992 but that was
certainly a different time without Houdini & Co and is not that exciting.

Check the different columns in ChessCafe. They also have archived columns and a database you can download.

Don't they now charge $1 for each older archived article ?

I don't think it's for the article, it's for the archived games.
