28.Rf2 was groundbreaking, I can't find any defense (29.Qe3 kills 28...Qg6 outright), so it's the end of the line for me.

{Black resigns.} 1-0

Well done Paul, you demonstrated that I couldn't defend the position. Congrats to Barnard for reaching a position I couldn't defend, too.

White also was getting a nice advantage after 28.Qxg4 Qg6 29.Qf4 axb3 30.axb3 Ba6 31.Bd3 Bxd3 32.Rxd3 e5 33.dxe5 Nd7 34.Rg3 Nd4 35.Qxd4 Qxh6 36.Qxd5 Rd8 37.h3 Nc5, though not as crushing as this instant win.

I just sucked at defending this, considering it takes just 10 minutes for Rybka in MultiPV to show Rf2 on top, and that Qxg4 isn't even second best, it speaks volumes about my flawed analysis method, probably the core reason of why I lose games, and something I didn't see until now, so the lesson is priceless.

If you think black could have defended better, I'll be happy to play the other side, though I think the Nightmare challenge has fullfilled its purpose.

*handshake*

Thanks for the game.

Interesting to hear that you missed such a move. I used MPV much more in our first game than in the second one. Maybe that’s one reason why I got in so much trouble (besides that the opening is probably just unsound).

Well, in retrospective it must be obvious I missed this after I played 26...Rxg4??, since Rf2 wins and this line was forced.

I spent hours and hours on end interactively analyzing the wrong positions for this game, since May!

Definitely a difficult game to play as black

I think 26...axb3 27.axb3 Rxg4 28.Nxg4 fxg4 may have been slightly better, although i was getting decent evals here i could not actually find a win.

However it would be a pig to defend.

Thanks for the game.

Best Paul.

Interestingly enough Fritz 11 finds Rf2 after 1.44 min on my single core.

I think you miss the point,it was finding this move many moves ago which was not so easy.

If you read through my posts i have mentioned when i thought a move was not the best.

I posted above what i considered critical position,Uly did not believe me and chose another move.

Uly on WBCCC has a difficult game, when this is over i am prepared to play black in above position.

Like youself i try to get at the true nature of a position.

Well I had this a while ago although I had 29.Qf4 instead of Qe3 (Qc7 seems popular)

Regards

> I had 29.Qf4 instead

After Qf4 black has enough time to rearrange its forces with moves like Bb7, Nd7 and Rd8, etc. After 29.Qe3 black can't do that as after Qe3 Bb7 Rdf1 Nd7 white has Bd3 which tears black to pieces, while after Qf4 Bb7 Rdf1 Nd7, Bd3 doesn't work because black has e5 and has turned the tables. White has to play Qc7 which isn't as good as the other line.

After 29.Qe3 the best I could find is e5, but after that everything falls apart, no sense in continuing the game.

Qc7 seemed defensible, unless there's yet another shocker in there...
