Hi,

What type of time contol games engine vs engine would be most useful to chess fans here?

I post many games here but never know if they are of use or not to most.

I would rather spend time playing matches that where of use to the majority.

120min+60s, 180min+90s or basically anything longer and high quality, long time controls is where real chess starts to be played.

Hi,

Thouse are long time controls indeed!! there must be some middle ground time contols of use to some.

Many thanks for your responce i will take that onboard.

2hr/40  I find is sufficient, but it comes down to the number of games played -at the very least 100 to get a sense of strength.

Hi,

just to understand this, 40 moves to be made over 2 hrs yes?
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-07-24 16:09
120 minutes 40moves repeated

Many thanks for clearing that up,

3 to 5 minute blitz or similar to 40 in 5 minutes repeated interest me.

Your game posts are always of interest. Thanks.

Many thanks

I just want to try and make my game posts more productive for game collectors and book makers like myself.

I'd say something like 10 minutes +10 seconds increment time controls should produce higher quality games than blitz and would allow a reasonable number of games to be played.

At least, these aren't Mickey Mouse time controls, because results won't be random like in games without increment.

Hi,

Would this type of time contol work well with test suite's ? or other sugestions most welcome.

>10 minutes + 10 seconds

Probably less use for blitz book makers based on my own findings over the years that inclusion of longer analysis games is not always beneficial for a blitz book if the engine and hardware combination is incapable of searching sufficiently far enough ahead when taken out of book.

I have always used 240 seconds per move for test suites but that is historical from when I used a 40 moves in 90 minutes time control playing against the slower dedicated machines.

Yes. Make sure that the engines don't get the increment of the added moves into the mix, though, so for test suites you'd better be starting from a FEN.

Peter is right though, in that blitz book makers would be benefited more by more games played, so 10+10 would only be suggested for pleasing people wanting slower games.

Hi, Uly

How would i work from a fen?

Test suites may look like this:

[Round "-"]
[White "-"]
[Black "-"]
[Result "*"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6

These contain games, and the engine is told to start playing from the end of them. For increment games, GUIs may add the increment for every move of the test suite. This is undesirable because it will make the game longer unnecessarily.

You can avoid this by instead starting from FENs, or EPD, from the tail positions of such games:

r1bqkbnr/pppp1ppp/2n5/4p3/4P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKB1R w KQkq -
rnbqkbnr/pp2pppp/3p4/2p5/4P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKB1R w KQkq -
rnbqkbnr/ppp1pppp/8/3p4/2PP4/8/PP2PPPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq c3
rnbqkb1r/pppppppp/5n2/8/2P5/5N2/PP1PPPPP/RNBQKB1R b KQkq c3

If you don't want to have to convert your games into FENs, it may be easier to just decrease the time control to 9 + 10, so you start closer to the original time control (if the moves in the test suite are close to 6, if they're closer to 12 then better to decrease it to 8 + 10, since the time you decrease will be added back by the GUI.)
