Komodo 5 has just been released. At the moment only the SP version is
available but we have a prototype of the MP version that we are
working hard to get ready.
Please note that the 32 bit versions are not yet avaiable - but will
be available within the next couple of days. The web site is not very
clear on that point and our webmaster is on a long sabbitical.
Also please note that there will not be a Komodo 4.1 release. However
to fullfill our promise of Komodo 4 MP, you will be able to get both
Komodo 5 SP and MP for the same price you would have payed to get
Komodo 4 MP. Simply puchase Komodo 5 SP for the discounted price and
you will be able to obtain Komodo 5 MP for free when it's available.
Komodo 5 has many improvements and bug fixes over Komodo 4 and will
play a much stronger game.

There is certainly an elo improvement, but as this depends on the time limit, we'd rather not be quoted on a single number. Let's see what the testers say.

After 2000 games at 2' + 2" our beta testers report +33 elo over Komodo 4. This gain will probably be less at longer time controls, but hopefully not too much less.

Apparently you misunderstand. You will be able to get Komodo 5 MP when available for the $20 price promised for Komodo 4 MP (if you bought Komodo 4 sp)! We merely offer you the option of getting Komodo 5 SP now for the same $20, then getting Komodo 5 MP for free.

No, that is for people who already paid for Komodo 4. For new purchasers it is $29.95 for Komodo 5 SP, with the promise that you can take that off the price of Komodo 5 MP when it is released.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but the MultiPV option often has the same moves albeit at different depths. I saw this same behaviour in one of the Critter versions but it's not in the latest (1.6a).
No, this is not a bug, it just shows both the old and new info. Some engines just delete the old info.

Fair enough, but I think Komodo 4 deletes it. It meant that one always saw 4 different moves with 4 different evaluations. Now, even with pv = 4 only 2 moves might be displayed for a few minutes.
I ran both at command prompt and it seems that K5 just keeps pumping out the infos as you say.
See the difference in the volume of output between d17 and 19 below...I personally prefer the K4 output...

Something was not correct about the way it was handled in K4, I forget just what the problem was. Regardless of what it looks like, K5 output is more correct.

Larry, that was a bad decision! I've been analysing with Komodo 5 and got confused. Not user-friendly, and the only engine running this way. A fine example was Critter's PV output: commonly understandable, giving out all information at every time!

Yes. We should really charge more than this for the upgrade to K5 MP, but then we would have to offer K4 MP for $20 and we decided against doing it that way. You are still saving $10 over a new purchaser of K5 SP.

At some point old versions should become free, we just haven't discussed details about this yet. Offhand it seems reasonable to make version X free when version (X+2) is for sale.
One thing that would be very helpful to know is what your intended upgrade path is. Do you plan your next release to be Komodo 5 MP (i.e. EXACTLY the same as K5, but MP) or are you intending a stronger SP version (Komodo 5.1) with a MP version to go with it?

The intent is to release Komodo 5 MP to be exactly the same as Komodo 5 SP if run with 1 thread. If for some reason this takes longer than expected and we happen to improve Komodo in the interim we'll have to discuss what to do then. In the future I expect we will release SP and MP simultaneously as everyone but Fritz seems to do.

It has been 6 hours since I purchased Komodo 5 and I still have no email download link.

Although on talkchess Larry is talking about the need for a different compile for AMD processors but K5 seems fine on my computer (of course I just checked it with a couple of Spielmann sacrifices from The Art of Sacrifice in CHess. (what a great book that it is!)
Oddly enough Komodo 4 and Junior 13 tend to like Spielmann's sacrifices the most.

Seems OK here too, nothing obviously wrong. But I haven't compared it to Intel.
